Chapter Twenty-Two: The Power of Connection
The silence was thick in the aftermath of the chaos. The Justice League stood frozen in place, their eyes fixed on the scene before them. The once-cracked foundation of the building was now soaked with water, shimmering under the fading light of the massive wave Percy had summoned moments ago. The air was still heavy with the scent of salt, and the residual energy hummed in the air.
But Percy, the source of that tremendous power, was no longer standing.
He lay unconscious on the ground, his body completely still, except for the faint rise and fall of his chest. His skin was pale, almost ghostly, his face etched with the exhaustion of someone who had pushed themselves far beyond their limit.
Jason was the first to reach him, his heart racing as he dropped to his knees beside Percy. “Percy! Wake up!” His voice trembled with urgency, but Percy didn’t respond. He was completely out of it.
The others quickly followed. Piper knelt on Percy’s other side, her dagger still clutched in one hand, though her usual bravado had been replaced with concern. Will, who had just been healed from his wounds, immediately went into action, leaning over Percy and checking his pulse.
“He’s alive,” Will murmured, but his voice was tight with worry. “Barely. He used way too much power.”
Piper glanced up at the Justice League, who still hadn’t moved from their spots. “You guys don’t get it,” she said, her voice cold. “You’ve been chasing us, cornering us, and pushing him to this point. This—” she gestured to Percy’s unconscious form “—this is your fault.”
The tension in the air was suffocating, thick with panic as the demigods huddled around Percy’s unmoving body. Will had been working frantically, his hands glowing with golden light, trying to summon enough healing energy to stabilize Percy, but it wasn’t enough. His pulse was faint, his breathing shallow, and the strain of using so much power had taken an unbearable toll on his body.
Jason paced nearby, unable to stand still, his fists clenched in frustration. Ace was kneeling beside Percy, her hands trembling as she gripped the hilt of her dagger. Shadow stood to the side, his expression dark and brooding, while Harley, bat in hand, was fuming, ready to swing at the Justice League if they so much as took another step forward.
"Will?" Jason’s voice broke the heavy silence. "Is it working?"
Will shook his head, his brow furrowed in concentration, sweat beading on his forehead. "I don’t know. I’m trying... but I can’t reach him. His energy is too low. It’s like... like he’s slipping away."
Piper swore under her breath, her eyes narrowing. "You have to do something, Will! You’re our healer!"
"I’m doing everything I can!" Will snapped, his voice laced with desperation. His hands trembled as he pressed them harder against Percy’s chest, trying to channel every last bit of energy he had left. But the golden light flickering from his hands was weak, barely illuminating the room.
Harley paced back and forth, her frustration mounting. "This ain’t workin’, kids! We need somethin’ stronger! More magic, more power, somethin’!"
The Justice League stood nearby, watching the scene unfold with growing concern. Superman’s face was grim, and Wonder Woman looked conflicted, but neither of them dared to intervene. They had seen Percy’s power, and they knew that these demigods were unlike anything they’d encountered before.
Suddenly, Piper stepped forward, her usually calm demeanor replaced by a look of determination. "Let me try something," she said quietly, kneeling beside Will. "It might not work, but we don’t have any other options."
Will glanced at her, confusion crossing his features. "What are you—?"
"Trust me," Piper said firmly, placing a hand on Will’s shoulder. "Just focus."
The moment her hand touched him, Will’s light flickered, then flared slightly brighter. He gasped, the golden glow in his hands growing more intense, as if Piper’s touch had somehow amplified his power. The energy radiating from his palms surged forward, and Percy’s chest rose just a little more, his breathing becoming slightly steadier.
"It’s working," Will whispered, disbelief in his voice. He focused harder, channeling the energy into Percy’s limp body. The light grew stronger, though still faint, but it was enough to start healing some of the strain that had torn through Percy’s body after his outburst of power.
Piper’s face was set in concentration, her hand still on Will’s shoulder, her voice soft but filled with resolve. "You can do this, Will. You’re his best chance."
The others watched in silence, a glimmer of hope sparking in their eyes as they saw the faintest signs of improvement in Percy’s condition. His face, though still pale, wasn’t as ashen as before. His breathing, while shallow, wasn’t as labored. Slowly, painfully, he seemed to be coming back.
Will’s shoulders sagged with relief, but he kept going, not daring to stop. "Come on, Percy," he muttered under his breath, his voice tight with emotion. "Come back to us."
Minutes passed, and the golden light continued to flow, growing brighter and steadier with Piper’s help. Jason and Nico gathered closer, watching as Percy’s color slowly returned, his breathing evening out.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Will’s hands stopped glowing, and he slumped back, exhausted. "That’s all I can do," he said, his voice hoarse. "He’s stable for now, but he needs to rest. I can’t push any more energy without draining myself completely."
Piper let out a shaky breath, her hand dropping from Will’s shoulder. "You did it," she whispered, glancing down at Percy’s peaceful face. "He’s going to be okay."
Jason knelt beside Percy, relief flooding his features. "Thank the gods," he muttered, brushing a hand through his messy hair. "I thought we were going to lose him."
Piper exhaled, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. "He’s tough. He’ll pull through."
Nico remained silent, his eyes locked on Percy’s still form, though his expression softened just a little.
Harley finally let out a loud whoop, spinning her bat in the air. "That’s more like it! I knew you kids had it in ya!" Her wild grin returned, though there was an unspoken gratitude in her eyes as she glanced at Will and Piper.
The Justice League, who had been watching the entire ordeal from a distance, exchanged glances. Wonder Woman stepped forward cautiously, her voice gentle. "Is he...?"
"He’s stable," Will said, though his exhaustion was evident. "But he needs time. Don’t think for a second we’re going to let you take him away from us."
Superman held up his hands in a gesture of peace. "We’re not here to take anyone. We just want to help."
"We don’t need your help," Nico growled, stepping protectively in front of Percy. "We’ve got this."
Harley sauntered over, twirling her bat. "Listen, flyboys. The kids are mine now. You don’t get to play hero here." She pointed her bat at them. "Go take your capes somewhere else."
Batman’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn’t argue. Instead, he simply nodded, signaling to the rest of the League. "We’ll give you space. But know this—we’ll be watching. If anything else happens, we’ll step in."
Harley laughed. "Yeah, yeah. Run along now."
As the Justice League reluctantly backed away, leaving the demigods and Harley to tend to their fallen leader, the room finally fell into a calm silence. Will leaned back against the wall, wiping the sweat from his brow. "We’ve got to be careful," he muttered. "If Percy tries something like that again, I don’t know if I’ll be able to bring him back."
"We’ll keep him safe," Jason said firmly. "All of us."
Nico nodded, his eyes filled with determination. "We’re not losing anyone else."
Piper, still kneeling beside Percy, gently brushed a strand of hair away from his face. "We’ll protect him. No matter what."
And as the room settled into a quiet stillness, they all knew one thing for certain: whatever came next, they would face it together. No one would be left behind.
