Chapter Fifteen: The Missing Sun
The next morning came sluggishly, the weight of their situation pressing down on Percy and the others. They had barely managed to escape from the Justice League again, but this time, something was off. Percy could feel it. The nagging feeling of unease had been growing ever since they had relocated to the docks, away from the Young Justice base.
He sat at the edge of the water, staring at the endless horizon. The sea was the one place he felt calm, but even now, the waves didn’t settle his anxiety.
Footsteps approached him from behind. It was Jason—Arrow. He looked exhausted, his hand already flipping his coin as if he was about to transform it into a weapon at a moment’s notice.
“You feel it too, don’t you?” Jason asked, his voice low.
“Yeah,” Percy muttered. “Something’s wrong.”
Jason nodded. “We’ve been lying low, doing everything right, but they’re still catching up. It’s like they’re always a step ahead.”
Percy stood, his gaze locked on the sea. “Where’s everyone?”
“Back at the warehouse,” Jason replied. “But we’ve got a problem.”
Percy turned to him, his eyes narrowing. “What problem?”
“Will’s missing.”
Ace, Shadow, and Jason gathered with Percy, tension thick in the air. It was a rare thing for Will—Sun—to wander off, especially without letting anyone know. He wasn’t the type to take risks, not when he was the one they all depended on for healing. But he was gone.
“We haven’t seen him since last night,” Ace said, her dagger Kaptopris twirling nervously in her hand. “He was here when we all went to sleep.”
“We searched the warehouse,” Shadow added, his voice barely above a whisper. “There’s no sign of him.”
Percy’s heart raced, dread creeping up his spine. He knew Will wouldn’t just leave without saying something. If he was missing, something bad had happened. And Percy had a sinking feeling he knew exactly who was behind it.
“They got him,” Percy said, his voice hard. “The Justice League.”
Jason gritted his teeth, flipping his coin as it shimmered into a spear. “If they’ve got Will, then we have to get him back.”
Ace stood, ready for action. “But how? We can’t just charge in. We don’t even know where they’re keeping him.”
Percy clenched his fists, the pull of the sea surging through his veins. “We’ll find him. We have to.”
After hours of searching, they managed to track down a location where they suspected the Justice League might be keeping Will. Percy and his group moved quietly, avoiding attention as they approached an industrial building near the city’s edge.
The closer they got, the stronger Percy’s connection to the ocean grew. He could feel the waves rumbling in the distance, eager to help him if needed. But even with that power, the Justice League was no easy opponent. They had already captured Will. Who knew what else they were capable of?
“We go in quietly,” Percy whispered to the others as they approached the building. “We don’t make a scene. We get Will, and we get out.”
Jason nodded, his spear ready at his side. “I’m with you.”
Ace and Shadow exchanged a glance before joining the others in their slow advance toward the building.
They slipped inside the industrial complex, keeping to the shadows. The building was quiet, almost eerily so, as if it were abandoned. But Percy knew better. The Justice League wouldn’t leave a prisoner unguarded.
As they moved deeper into the structure, they finally found a large room at the end of a long corridor. Through a narrow window, Percy could see a few figures inside. Will was there, sitting in a chair with his hands bound. He looked dazed but alive.
But he wasn’t alone.
Superman and Wonder Woman stood nearby, talking in low voices. Batman was there too, watching everything with that same calculating gaze.
“We have to move fast,” Percy whispered to the others. “They’re going to interrogate him, and if they figure out what we are…”
“We’re not going to let that happen,” Jason said firmly. “We need a distraction.”
Ace’s eyes flickered to Percy. “The sea.”
Percy nodded. The ocean was close—he could feel it. He could summon the water, crash it through the building, and create enough chaos to get Will out. But it was risky. They had to act fast.
“On my signal,” Percy said, gripping the small form of Riptide in his pocket. “Get ready.”
Percy summoned a wave of water from the nearby docks. It surged through the building, crashing into the walls and flooding the room where Will was being held. The sudden force of water sent Superman and Wonder Woman back, caught off guard by the strength of the wave.
Batman barely moved, his eyes scanning the room as the chaos unfolded.
“Go!” Percy shouted.
Jason and Ace darted forward, Jason flipping his coin and transforming it into a sword, while Ace moved with precision, her dagger ready. Shadow stayed behind to control the shadows and keep them hidden.
Ace reached Will first, slicing through his restraints with Kaptopris. Will blinked, shaking off the daze, but before anyone could celebrate their small victory, Superman recovered.
“They’re here!” Superman called out, his eyes locked on the group.
Ace grabbed Will’s arm, pulling him to his feet as Jason covered them, fending off Wonder Woman with his sword. Percy stood at the center of the chaos, water swirling around him, ready to strike if needed.
But they couldn’t stay.
“Get out of here!” Percy yelled, directing his friends toward the exit. “I’ll cover you!”
Ace, Will, and Jason bolted for the door, with Shadow following closely behind. Percy waited until they were clear before sending another powerful wave toward Superman and Wonder Woman, forcing them back one last time before he turned and ran.
They regrouped by the docks, panting and soaked but alive. Will was free, and that was all that mattered.
“Are you okay?” Percy asked, placing a hand on Will’s shoulder.
Will nodded, though he looked pale and shaken and a hint of nervousness underlied his words. “Yeah. They didn’t hurt me. Just asked a lot of questions.”
“What did you tell them?” Jason asked, worry evident in his voice.
“Nothing,” Will replied nervously. “I didn’t say a word.”
Percy sighed in relief. They had managed to escape again, but it was a close call. Too close.
“We can’t keep doing this,” Jason muttered. “Sooner or later, they’re going to figure out what we are.”
Percy didn’t respond, but the weight of Jason’s words pressed heavily on him. He knew they couldn’t keep running forever. The Justice League was relentless, and it was only a matter of time before their luck ran out.
But for now, they were safe. And Will was with them, but something was off about him now.
