26. Bested and Envisaging
Princess Lyra Belle de Anemoi
______
Chapter 26
Lyra rushed to the secluded garden along with Solon.
One of the guild members named Gayle stood there in disguise. Sighting Lyra, he was about to bow when Lyra places her hand and stated,
"Save the greeting. Exactly inform me. What have you discovered?"
"Your Highness, there is no poison involved nor any use of the drug."
"Huh?"
"We detected traces of black magic."
"Black magic?"
"Typically, black magic is discovered in the underground of Gaia. Since it does not exist in Anemoi, this may be rather new and startling. However, I am certain it was black magic. Black magic possesses multiple techniques such as using a voodoo doll, cursed lockets or any other accessories, or even powders that have been cursed. The black magic practiced in question is one to compel one to fall ill. This makes one display so much weakness that they demonstrate impaired functioning in daily life. Although there is one condition for black magic to work, that it solely succeeds when the said person possesses feeble will."
"....father lost most of his willpower after mother died...that is equally the time when he fell ill...."
Lyra mumbled to herself as Gayle continued explaining,
"It seems whatever was used was smuggled from Gaia. It would be more adequate to search for any unusual accessories around his majesty. Traditionally, such accessories should include huge gems in them that do not reflect light. It is one of the ways to recognize such items."
"Solon, get to it. I demand them to search and keep an eye on everything that may be linked to this. On top of that, gather me all the books you can on black magic."
Solon inclines his head and leaves.
"Gayle, thank you so much. I appreciate all your help."
"It was our honor. If you require, we can search for ways to break this."
"I would appreciate that very much. Please. Any information you can obtain, convey it to me. I will be visiting Gaia soon, therefore, I will personally investigate it."
"Very well."
Gayle bows and takes his leave.
Meanwhile, Lyra thinks to herself,
'I should write to Dylan and Aelia, asking if they know anything. Especially Aelia should be able to uncover something about this since she lives in Gaia.'
The next few days went by as quickly as the falling leaves. Lyra locked herself in her library, reading all sorts of things she could on Black Magic. Dylan and Aelia had yet to reply to her.
Meanwhile, Duke Nabal and his family were acting as if nothing was amiss. Although Hubris was presently a free man, he had become withdrawn from his family. A day never went by when he didn't fight with them. Their booming voices would fill the palace halls. By now, everyone was used to this.
However one day, out of a sudden, Hubris stopped fighting. His behavior went back to how it was before he got jailed. It was an unexpected turn, yet everyone felt at peace. Especially Duchess Medea since she didn't have to face resistance every single day.
It was currently the night before Lyra and Astrid had to leave for Dylan's birthday party in Helios. Lyra was being bombarded by the things Wily had handed to her. Ever since her father declared those words to her in front of Wily about how she should take responsibility, Wily hands her most of the department's work to do with the excuse of how she can never be a good Queen if she can't take responsibility like this.
All of this was starting to irk Lyra. Within the towering stacks of paper, she abruptly gets up, slamming her hands on the table. This startles Solon who was also hidden among the bundles of paper.
"That is it! I can't tolerate this."
She starts storming out of the room with Solon calling after her,
"Where are you going, your highness?"
"To conclude this."
Saying so, she storms out and heads directly to her father's chambers.
After their previous talk, she had been dodging him as much as possible. Even when they would meet up, she would overlook mentioning what she stated last time.
"Father!"
She goes indoors, startling the king who was laying in bed and reading a book.
"Lyra?"
"You said I should be responsible if I want to be a Queen, right? Then transfer me the duties of the head of the accounts department. If I remain the one leading, then I will make sure no one under me will be able to do what happened before. I will keep an eye on every sole thing."
"But you said you didn't want such a fundamental role?"
King Derek blinked in surprise. Lyra inwardly sighed. It is factual she said that before because she didn't wish to take too much responsibility since she plans to leave soon. However, this is too much.
"That is precise. However, if I have to do something then I want to do it right. I can't bear this."
"Then what about Wily?"
"What about him?"
Lyra shrugs in response.
"He is currently handling all of this."
"In that case, he can work under me. He will do so in the future so might as well acquire some practice beforehand."
Lyra grins.
Sighing, her father gives in,
"Fine. I will talk to Nabal and Wily after you come back from the trip."
Hearing that, Lyra's expression fell,
"What do you imply talk to them? If they don't agree then you aren't going to do it?"
"That is not it. I merely want to appreciate their opinion. They are involved in this, and I don't require any injustice to happen."
This makes Lyra scoff,
"Therefore you can carry out injustice towards your daughter but not towards them?"
"Lyra, when have I ever done that towards you, my dear?"
Taking a deep breath, Lyra questions,
"Why? Precisely enlighten me why do you support them so much? Do you retain any idea what they have done?"
She didn't want to state the latter question but her frustration got the best of her.
"What do you mean?"
"I don't want to reveal it."
Biting her lips, she tries to avoid answering. However, Derek retorted,
"If you are talking about my health, then I know."
Lyra's eyes go wide,
"What do you know? If you are referring to your suspicion of Uncle Javis, then save your words. He is not to blame."
"...I know..."
Lyra narrows her gaze, her face was stricken with pain and hurt,
"Don't tell me...you knew everything?"
"..."
"Tell me! What do you know?"
Lyra couldn't help but raise her voice. In response, Derek tried to soothe her down,
"Leave it be, Lyra. What happened has happened. As long as they are not hurting you two."
"ha....what in the....what happened to you father? How could you be like this? You know they practised black magic on you and still you aren't investigating anything? Why?"
"There is no point in making enemies. Your position right now requires as many allies as possible."
"Undoubtedly they aren't allies, are they? They are fucking rats!"
"Language, Lyra!"
"Oh so now you only care about language when they tried to assassinate you?"
Lyra starts pacing the room. She could not quite comprehend why her father was behaving the way he does.
"I don't comprehend how you could be so calm like this. Is it black magic? Is that controlling your thoughts and making you act like this? It must be it. I am accurate, ain't I?"
"Lyra...no. That is not true."
"Then why the hell are you not doing anything?!"
Lyra bellowed in frustration, with slight tears in her eyes. Whenever she got furious, her eyes would become tearful and she loathed it.
"I merely don't want to. Okay? Enough about this. Just focus on yourself. Leave me be. I barely maintain a few years to live so what use is fighting for my life? Let it be."
Lyra went down on her knees to look up at her father, squeezing his hand she adds,
"Why do you state it like that? Please for god sake, fight. Don't give up like this. If you knew then you should do something."
"I....do not want to."
Derek replied with a blank expression. This makes Lyra taken aback. Gathering a deep breath, she gets up and firmly states,
"If you aren't going to do anything, then I will."
Saying so she leaves the room as her father keeps calling her out from behind.
_______
Around two days later, Dylan who had finished the border business was in the Zion Palace (Helios Main Royal Palace) for his birthday celebration.
This palace was known as the Olympus of the living world. Its beauty was far stretched compared to any of the palaces from Anemoi. Unlike Anemoi's Palace which was more compact and taller, Zion Palace was more stretched out in space and was equal to a small town.
Dylan's parents were excited to have the Princesses around, however, he, in particular, was extremely looking forward to seeing Lyra.
He was roaming around in excitement in one of the sitting areas when one man approaches him holding two letters.
Excited he swiftly takes them without even asking who they are from.
'Finally, I received them. I can't believe she sent me two letters. Due to the possible war situation, I wasn't able to receive her letters before.'
He sits down on a sofa and reveals one of the letters while smiling to himself.
Suddenly the door opens and in comes a man, wearing white clothes. He was tall but just a few cm shorter than Dylan. His hair was more of a brownish color than Dylan's. Although they looked similar, his features were softer and one marked difference was their eye colors. His was almond brown blackish in contrast to Dylan's sparkling wolf-like hazel eyes. When he opened his mouth to speak, he did not display bunny teeth like Dylan, nor he had dimples.
"It seems Mother is extremely excited since she is having everything inspected for the third time today to make sure everything is perfect for the princesses."
He states while standing behind Dylan, trying to peak into what he is reading.
"Brother, get lost."
Dylan remarked to his older brother. This was Alexander the crown prince of Helios around 27 years old. Although the brothers bickered a lot, nevertheless they got along fine and always had each other's back.
The crown prince Alexander moved up his glasses that were on the bridge of his nose. These glasses were circular with strings attached at the back. Something which was unusual to witness a man his age wearing since it was considered out of fashion. This style of glasses was typically supported by those in their old ages which made it even more unusual for the crown prince to wear.
Sitting next to Dylan, he places his arm around him and inquires while trying to sneak a peek at the letter,
"What are you reading?"
"Nothing. I am busy so get going. Leave."
Dylan retorted while getting up and trying to hide the letters.
"Well, you are going to get more busy after this, since Father desires you to handle all the international affairs."
"What happened to Ingrid?"
"She is on maternity leave."
"For how long?"
"Well...3 years..."
"Huh?"
"Ingrid requested to extend the leave since she wanted to spend time with her baby as well."
"Fine, I will handle it. Merely send all the paperwork to Xavier, and I'll analyze it."
"Good."
After a brief pause, Alexander remarks,
"So you are still sending and receiving letters from the Crown Princess?"
"....you peruse it?"
"Only the name. I'm surprised. I thought she stopped conveying it. I still recall the time you stopped receiving her letters and lingered in despair. Oh, how pitiful you were."
Alexander wryly remarks to which Dylan rolls his eyes,
"She did not stop delivering it. Just some other unfortunate circumstances took place."
"Hence, she didn't abandon you?"
Alexander chuckles as Dylan bluntly retorts,
"Oh just shut up, grandma."
Because of Alexander's glasses, Dylan often ridiculed him for exhibiting them. Even though Alexander doesn't appreciate someone badmouthing the glasses, he still allows Dylan to be like that because he knows it's all fun and everyone else does it too in their family. It is merely a light banter between brothers. Nevertheless, this does not sustain him back from answering back,
"Yeah yeah. These aren't grandma glasses by the way!"
He takes them off and starts explaining while admiring the spectacles,
"They were explicitly manufactured for me by the brand called Painite. These strings are delicately handcrafted with the rare cloth..."
Alexander stops speaking as he realizes that Dylan had long gone fled the room and he looked as if he was just talking to himself out loud.
That afternoon, horns and trumpets were heard all across the Royal Palace to announce the arrival of the Princesses from Anemoi. Dylan excitedly stood along with his brother and parents, eagerly waiting to sight Lyra. However, from all three carriages only Astrid, the maidservants, and their bags came out. He kept peaking around while standing still, anxious as to why Lyra wasn't over here.
Meanwhile, Astrid was greeting his family. Even though Astrid formally greeted them, in response Queen Luna hugged her tightly in response. Queen Luna possessed snow-white hair and brown slightly hazel eyes. Her white appearance and traditional gold headset made her look like an angel descended from heaven. Her nickname befall the white fairy since she looked no less than a fairy.
"Oh my! You have grown so much since the last time I witnessed you. You truly look like an angel!"
Flustered Astrid smiles in response. Queen Luna subsequently adds,
"Where is Lyra?"
A question that Dylan wanted to ask as well. Astrid's face turns apologetic as she replies,
"She couldn't make it due to some political affairs. She conveys her apologies to everyone and said that she heartily wished she could be with us."
"Is everything alright?"
This time it was King Aaron that inquired.
"Definitely. Hopefully, it is. There was some unrest and struggle going on so she had to stay back and handle everything personally. Although she extremely did look forward to coming here. Not long ago until last night, she was extremely thrilled. However, things took another turn. She has sent her heartiest wishes and apologies for not being able to attend."
"It's extremely unfortunate."
"I sincerely wish she would have been over here. Nevertheless, I hope everything is alright back there."
"Thank you for your good wishes."
"Well, we can't merely keep standing here now, can we? Let us go inside."
"I'll go inform the maids to get the refreshments ready."
The Queen merrily went inside. Whereas King Aaron turned to Alexander and Dylan,
"I have some work to do. I will hastily conclude it off so escort her inside properly. Got it?"
He then turns to Astrid and fondly smiles,
"I will see you soon. Please be at ease and think of this palace as your home. It is delightful to have you here."
"Thank you."
Astrid smiles back as he then takes his leave. There was this uneasy silence. Dylan was about to probe more into why Lyra wasn't here when Astrid who was observing Alexander remarked,
"Since when did your highness start wearing grandma's glasses?"
Upon her comment, Dylan started laughing out loud while Alexandar embarrassed with his face reddened took off his glasses.
Even though Dylan and Lyra were close, Astrid and Alexandar weren't as close since Astrid would mostly be playing around with Dylan and Lyra when they were young. In spite of that they were comfortable enough that despite not meeting and staying in touch so much, whenever they would meet, they would talk as if they have known each other forever.
Even now, Astrid had commented based on her sheer curiosity since Alexander never wore glasses before. She frowns at Dylan's reaction and naively adds,
"Why are you laughing? I was merely intrigued since his eyesight was not that bad before."
In between laughs, Dylan turns to Alexander and retorts,
"See, even people from Anemoi think they are grandma glasses."
Confused, Astrid remarks,
"Did I utter something wrong? Are they not entitled as grandma glasses?"
Dylan stops laughing and turns to Astrid,
"Wait...you weren't teasing him?"
Swaying her head, Astrid replies,
"No, I genuinely thought they are dubbed as grandma glasses, are they not?"
Still chuckling, Dylan pats Alexander and states,
"Go ahead, grandma. Explain to her highness what these spectacles are called."
"Well..."
"Ah, just a moment. Sorry to interrupt."
Astrid interrupts and hands Dylan a letter,
"This is for you from Lyra. She was terribly saddened at not being able to come and wanted to convey her feelings. Hope you understand."
Startled Dylan rapidly seizes the letter,
"Thank you."
Astrid then turns to Alexander,
"Sorry for that. What were you mentioning about the glasses?"
"Well, they are.."
They start walking inside the Palace as Astrid intently listens to his explanation,
"exclusively made for me by the brand called Painite. These strings were delicately handcrafted with the rare cloth..."
Alexander stops talking when he observes Dylan not following them. He turns and inquires,
"Are you not coming?"
"You guys go ahead. I will unite you after reading this."
"That guy sees nothing else except when it comes to her letters."
Alexander remarks as he then turns around and regards Astrid waiting. She reminds him what they were talking about,
"What type of rare cloth?"
Her slight gesture strikes his heart as he holds antiques and stuff made from them quite near and dear to his heart. Something which his family never genuinely appreciates and ridicules him for as well sometimes. He has tried offering the same explanation to them but just like earlier, they disregard him. Chiefly because he provides them the same explanation every single time and they must have crammed his answer by now.
Nevertheless, seeing how Astrid was attentively listening to his every word begat him to feel appreciated for the first time in his life after living with such a family.
Meanwhile, Dylan instantly opens the letter and starts perusing it,
