Chapter XIV
"I can see this cabin hasn't changed much." Summer said, looking around the room. She was remembering everything that happened.
"Nothing to really change here honestly. It's been easy to maintain everything while the girls were off at school." Tai said.
"So, what did I miss in these past, oh I don't know, thirteen years?" Summer sat down on the sofa.
"Well, girls grew up, went to Beacon, and that was that." Tai replied.
"As for recent events... Beacon was almost destroyed by Grimm. The perpetrators responsible worked for... her..." Qrow struggled to get that last word out.
"Salem... when she wants something done, it usually doesn't fail, what changed the course of the battle?" Summer asked.
"Well, three people with telekinetic powers with an army of clone soldiers." Qrow said bluntly.
"I'm sorry, clone soldiers?" Summer couldn't believe what she was hearing.
Tai looked at the man with black hair, they were going to have to show her what happened. Since the news broke out, Taiyang made sure to record the news on his receiver. He turned the TV on and scrolled through the recordings he had saved and hit play.
"Beacon is currently under siege by Grimm after what happened at the Vytal Festival Tournament. Prize student, Pyrrha Nikos, cut down another student with her own weapons. The ensuing fear brought the Grimm to Vale's doorstep. Huntsman across the school and city have been fighting tirelessly." The news anchor got something else and that made her eyes widen, "Now it seems that Atlesian Knights are attacking panicked civilians and Huntsmen alike!"
Salem was trying to start a war... and so far it seemed it was working.
"No, this had to have been planned by her..." Summer said.
"Fast forward to the good part." Qrow pointed at the TV and Tai fast forwarded it.
The same anchorwoman came on the screen, "A massive unknown warship had just entered orbit, and small dropships have been arriving in the city. Reports say they are clad in mostly white armor with grey highlights. It seems they using advanced laser weaponry to easily cut through the Knights and Grimm. We now go live on the scene."
"Thank you Lisa, we have one of the troopers that came down from the ship." The camera panned to the man with the white armor that was described earlier. It seemed this trooper had a wolf insignia painted on the helmet.
"I don't think this is the time for an interview..." The trooper said.
"At least tell us who you are and where you came from."
He sighs, mumbling under his breath and pinching the bridge of his nose before replying, "CT-3874, but my brothers call me Striker. We're clone troopers from the 104th Attack Battalion."
"Clone soldiers?"
"Yes, and now is not the time, it's not safe here. You need to go now before more of those things come back."
"We got company! More droids!" Another trooper shouted.
Striker put his helmet back on and went to battle, not before shouting to the newscast, "Get out of here, now! It's not safe here!" That's when the feed cut off.
Summer just blinked, trying to put together what she just saw. This is what she came back to? People from another galaxy just happen to be here to help during the attack?
"Tai?" Summer asked.
"Yes?"
"What in the hell was that??"
"Like I said, you missed a lot! Jeez, I don't remember you being like this."
"Last time you saw me this confused was when I was pregnant with Ruby, and I bet you don't want that to happen again."
Qrow shivered at the thought, remember those days, "Can I be honest? You were pretty fucking terrifying."
"Me on mood swings is never a good thing, Qrow. Especially when I don't get my cookies during my cravings. Taiyang." She eyed him down, almost evil about it.
That only made him laugh nervously and he scratched the back of his head.
Qrow looked to Summer, and the only thing he had for her were questions.
"Summer, enough about us, what about you?" He put some emphasis on the last word. Ha. Get it? Last Word? I'll stop now.
She sighs, "Well... if you must know, I met Salem... I thought she was going to kill me, but she didn't..."
"What stopped her?" Qrow asked.
"She didn't kill me, she just made me disappear. Her magic is powerful, and somehow, I ended up on Earth. You know, Nightmare's home planet? Anyway, I spent about a month in this rusty Cosmodrome in an old nation known as Russia. It had occupants, but not the ones you'd like. It was infested by aliens known as the Fallen. Four armed, space pirate pieces of shit. They finally caught up with me after I... did what a Huntress does. I killed quite a few. I saw them attack innocent families, and that's how I know there were humans. I was running toward a massive wall, past a bunch of rusted cars, next thing I knew, I took a hot bolt of plasma straight through my heart... then... I died... it was just black..."
"By the gods... how did you come back?" Taiyang's heart sank when he found out his love died, but happy that she's back.
"Well, next thing I knew, I was awake. My first breath after I was reborn burned like hell. My joints were so locked up I could barely open my hands. My vision was blurry at first, and my hearing wasn't so great either. But then I heard a voice."
"What voice?"
At the flick of her wrist, she summoned Ghost above her hand, "Gentlemen, this is Ghost. He's the one that brought me back."
"Nice to meet both of you. I can see why you like her so much, and I know I found the right Guardian." Ghost was just trying to make conversation.
"That is what brought you back from the dead?" Qrow was a little amused that a floating eyeball supposedly brought her back.
"Qrow, I could shoot myself right now, and he'd get me right back up."
"You're... you're serious."
"Yes. I am. Ghost, go look around the house. Make yourself at home."
"You got it." He flies upstairs, scanning every little thing. You know. Ghost being Ghost.
Tai looked back at Summer, "So what happened after?"
"With no memory of who I was at the time, I went back to the City under the Traveler. It's a big white ball that made the Ghosts. Anyway, I made a name for myself as Ashla, and I sort of became a legend."
"Legend how, exactly?"
"Killed a few gods. No biggie. But I will say this. I've seen things out there much worse than Salem will ever be."
"Like... like what?"
"Worst thing I can think of is a hive god by the name of Oryx. He had the ability to abduct other aliens, rip out their souls, and replace it with nothing but Darkness... they were called the Taken for a reason. And that was one of my bigger accomplishments. As for recently, we had to stop the Fallen from using a human made nanotechnology called SIVA. And that's where the girls came into play."
"Is... is that why Yang's arm is missing?" Taiyang didn't want to make her feel bad, he just wanted to know.
Summer's eyes filled with tears, "I'm sorry, Taiyang... but she lost her arm fighting... them..."
Qrow leaned in and rubbed her shoulder, "Who is them?"
She wiped her eyes and composed herself, "Back before we were called Guardians, there were Iron Lords, and Warlords. The Iron Lords sought to use their gifts to help humanity through the Dark Age. Warlords abused their power and used their Light to conquer. The Iron Lords didn't stand for this, and so war was waged between the two groups for who knows how long. The Iron Lords were able to find SIVA in Russia, and sought to claim it for themselves. As Saladin told me, more than 100 Iron Lords entered what he calls the Plaguelands. Only 9 reached the replication chamber."
"Where do the girls fit into this?" Taiyang asked.
"Well, when the Fallen found SIVA, they mass produced it. They had infused it into themselves, and their weapons. When we reached the place where Lady Jolder, one of the Iron Lords tried to destroy the replicator, we found something... disturbing. 3 of the 9 Iron Lords that made it were still... alive. SIVA had kept them living for centuries... when I went to activate that self destruct, I swear I heard her voice... but the mutant Iron Lords were released from their bindings, and set to attack mode along with some Fallen backing them up. And Yang... lost her arm to one of them..."
"Alright... I heard enough..." Taiyang got up and went to go find his daughter. He wanted to make sure she was okay.
Summer turned to Qrow, "I expect Raven is nowhere to be found?"
"She actually came with us to that other galaxy. We all pitched in to end a galactic wide war. After we got back, she took off again. I have no idea where exactly, but I think I have an idea of what area." Qrow said, setting his scroll down and a hologram of Remnant appeared, "I think she's somewhere in the woods of Anima. And you know about our upbringing. We were originally bandits, so guess what she's doing?"
"Leading the tribe... thanks Qrow. I'm gonna go get some rest." She heads upstairs. She couldn't remember the last time she set foot in that bedroom.
She opened the door to Taiyang's bedroom. Tai was a bit of a clean freak. The bed was made, the floor was clean, the clothes were put away. Summer went up to one of the drawers and opened it, and it put a smile on her face seeing what she found.
"Nice to know you didn't get rid of my clothes..." Summer picked out a set of comfy clothes to wear before heading back out into the hallway. She saw Ruby's door was cracked open, and saw her daughter playing video games with Nightmare. Ruby was clearly the more experienced, and Nightmare had some obvious struggles. He didn't know what he was doing. This is one of the few times he got to sit down and play some video games.
She smiled as she walked past and into the bathroom. Some thoughts plagued her mind, and she hoped a hot relaxing shower would help.
Minutes go by. The water was soaking through her hair and down her back. She had hoped this would subside her anger. But it didn't. She could only think of the one person that got her killed. And it wasn't Salem.
Deep down, she knew that it was someone she trusted that sold her out to that monster. She felt the center of her chest. She was glad there wasn't a scar when the Fallen shot her. She knew one thing was for certain.
Raven Branwen was going to die for what she did.
