Chapter 29

Colton

Only this time, she's limp, not immediately shoving me away, and I feel panic grip me as one paramedic rushes forward to take her from me.
"Is she alright?" I choke out desperately.
The man doesn't look up from getting her inside the ambulance as he answers.
"She's certainly still breathing, but she's passed out, and that's not good on overdoses. We need to get to the hospital to pump her stomach fast."
I nod hurriedly, scrambling inside with them as Jason steps back. "Good luck," he says as they prepare to close to doors. "And we'll be in touch."
I nod, and turn to where they're working too fast for me to even try to understand what they're doing.
Instead, I sink to a seat and put my head in my hands, giving myself over to prayer.

I look up for the millionth time as I hear the doors open, hoping once more that it's a nurse with news about Lexi. But it's not even coming from the right set of doors. Still, I do feel relief surge through me as I realize who it is.
Mike is leading the way, and crosses to me first.
"Any news?"
I shake my head miserably.
He nods slowly and sinks down next to me in the ER waiting room, as we're joined by Joel, Moriah, and Luke.
"What went down with her parents?" I ask after a long moment.
"All three of them there were arrested," Moriah says, glancing at Joel for what's obviously a two-second, wordless conversation. "And I think we all already know this, but once Alexis is out of recovery, she's going to need a new place to stay."
"We'll take her," I say immediately, and realize the exact same thing just came out of Luke, Joel, and Mike's mouths.
Joel offers me a small smile. "You're closest to her, Mate," he says, "So if you and Annie think you're ready for that, we're not going to argue. But you're still pretty young to have a child period, much less a teenager."
"And it'll never be like that," I admit, "but I can certainly take care of her like an older brother, at least for a while. And," I add with a smirk, "Six years isn't that much older than me, you know. Besides, I'm older than you, Moriah."
She laughs. "I know, I know, we have a big age difference. But he was the one who fell for a teenager. It's easy for a seventeen-year-old to fall in love with a twenty-six-year-old."
"Oh yes, even despite my fake accent?" Joel teases.
She rolls her eyes. "Yeah, whatever."
And I'm once again distracted by the sound of a door opening. But this time, it's on the right side of the room, and this time, it really is a nurse.
She glances around the people seated here. "For Alexis Greggors?" she asks, and I'm on my feet in a second, crossing to her on legs that are suddenly shaking.
"That's us," I manage to choke out.
The woman nods, and waves us through those silver doors before turning to us once more.
"We got her stomach pumped, and so far it looks like she's gonna make it out of this with no permanent liver damage."
My legs go weak and relief, and I reach out to steady myself against the wall as I breath out a prayer of thanks.
The woman offers us a small smile. "She's a lucky girl. And she seems to have famous friends. You're a little far from Nashville, aren't you all?"
I manage a small smile of my own. "It's a long story."
She nods, and turns to the hallway we're standing in. "She's still asleep, but you're welcome to wait for her to wake up in her room."
We follow her, and I suddenly feel worry grip me once more. Because I realize I have absolutely no idea what to expect when Lexi wakes up.
