extended summary

River Marshall had always been one to keep to herself. Starting from the moment she was born, River was surprisingly calm and quiet. She rarely cried, whined, or acted out. To most, she would have been described as the perfect child; one that parents only fantasized of having.

She was conceived five years after the Marshall family adopted Andréa Labonair, better known as Hayley Marshall. Although not biologically related, the two were thick as thieves. Although the Marshall family had the ideal daughters, they were far from being ideal parents. River often found herself being left alone starting in her early toddler years and it progressively became more and more consistent. Hayley vowed to be there for her little sister, and she never once broke that promise-- that is until she accidentally killed someone, which started an infinitely unraveling chain of events.

From the moment Hayley took her first life, nothing would ever be the same for the Marshall family. She quickly realized that she wasn't like anybody else, that she wasn't human. She pleaded with her adoptive parents to understand, but they feared for their youngest daughter's life, and thus River's best friend, her big sister, was forced to leave.

The last thing Hayley ever wanted to do was hurt River, so she opted not to share the heartbreaking news of her situation. Instead, she quickly packed a bag and ran out into the dead of night in hope of finding information of her biological parents. She only hoped that her sweet little sister would learn to forgive her for fleeing so suddenly.

Unbeknownst to everyone, River had been there on that fateful night, listening in anguish as her parents kicked Hayley out of the home. Tears stung her young eyes, but she sat in silence as usual, just listening as her heart shattered into tiny little pieces. Surprisingly, River wasn't afraid of her sister after hearing what she was. Creatures, especially feared ones, fascinated the girl. She had several prized stuffed animals that were propped up proudly on her bed: a spider, a bulldog, and a wolf, all of which carry unfortunate backgrounds.

To everyone else, Hayley was a monster. But to River, Hayley was her hero. She stared up at the sky every night, hoping that under one full moon laid her big sister. She crossed her fingers that one day they would find each other again. She never knew just how much that would change her life.
