Chapter Twenty-Two

I wake up to yelling. "What the fuck are you doing here?" I hear Devin yell. I stand up and run over to where he is. He's screaming at his brother.

"Shit," I say. Devin whips around to face me.

"Did you tell him?" Devin asks me.

"Devin, listen to me-" I start.

"You didn't have the fucking right to!" he yells.

"Excuse us," I say to Nick. I pull Devin into the bathroom. "You need to pull your goddamn shit together," I tell Devin.

"Why the fuck would you tell him?" he says. I shrug.

"Oh, I dunno. Maybe because that's his mother too! Or maybe because this could be his last time to see her! Or maybe because you need him," I say. Devin glares at me. "Look, I get that you're freaking out and you don't know what to do. I get that you need someone to take it out on, and I get that I'm that person. I also get that you're pissed off because he left you. But you need to pull your fucking shit together," I tell Devin.

"Okay," he says quietly.

"Now, you're going to go out there and apologize to your brother for the way you acted," I tell him. I look at my watch and then add, "They'll be taking your mother into surgery soon." He nods and we walk out. Devin doesn't make any move to apologize to his brother. I give him a gentle shove forward.

"I'm sorry for the way I acted," Devin says slowly.

"Here, I brought you clothes," Nick says as he tosses Devin a bag. Devin takes it and walks into the bathroom. "Thank you for calling me, Riley," he says.

"No problem, thanks for coming," I say. He nods and stares sadly at his mother. "So how have you been? I haven't seen you in awhile," I ask him.

"Good, I got married," he says.

"That's good. His name's Theo, right?" I ask Nick. He smiles.

"Yeah, how have you been?" he asks me.

"Good," I say. Devin walks out of the bathroom as the doctors walk in.

"We're ready to take Mrs. Wright to surgery," Doctor Williams says. I look at Devin and Nick.

"Can we have a minute?" I ask.

"Of course. We'll be in the hallway. Come and get us when you're ready," Doctor Williams says. He and Doctor Felix walk out. Neither Devin or Nick have made a move. I go first and gently squeeze her hand. I step back and then Nick steps forward. He hugs her and mutters something. Devin's last. He stares at her for a couple of seconds.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," he whispers. And it breaks my heart. He hugs her and then lets go. He steps back and I slip my hand into his, squeezing it. The doctors come in.

"We're going to take her to surgery now. It should be a while. A family member has to be on the premises at all times. You can walk us to a certain point and then it's hospital personnel only, any questions?" Doctor Williams explains. We shake our heads. Doctor Felix wheels Mrs. Wright as we walk. We all stop at the doors. "This is goodbye." They give us a minutes to say silent goodbyes and then they wheel her away.

"I'm going to get coffee, do you guys want anything?" I ask once we're back in the room. They put in a couch and another chair. They both shake their heads. Nick digs around in the bag and hands me a sweatshirt and sweatpants.

"Here, I thought you might want something to change into," Nick says. I put the sweatshirt on put hand him back the sweatpants.

"Thank you, but I don't really think that these are going to fit," I say. He nods. I throw my hair into a ponytail and slip on my heels. I leave the room and walk down to the cafeteria. I get a coffee and then look around for a gift shop. They have one, but it doesn't sell any sort of clothes. I walk back up to the room. "Where'd Nick go?" I ask Devin.

"For a walk, I think," he says. He's sitting on the couch staring at the ceiling. I sit down next to him. He plucks my coffee out of my hands and throws it in the garbage. I don't say anything. "You should sleep."

"I'm fine," I tell him.

"Please," Devin says. I sigh deeply and then out my head on his chest and wrap my arms around his stomach. His arms go around me. "Thank you," he says quietly. I nod. "It doesn't feel real, that this happened to her," Devin tells me. "It's my worst nightmare come true."

"I...I think that no one expected this to happen," I say finally.

"He'd gotten violent before. Sometimes he would throw things or yell but he never hurt her," Devin says.

"He would hurt both of you though," I say quietly. Devin laughs bitterly.

"He was teaching us how to be a man, how to take a hit like a man," he says. "That man is a very sick bastard. She should have left him."

"Why didn't she?" I ask.

"She was trying to keep it together for us, and I think she thought that the man she married was still inside of him. Somewhere. And when she finally gave him the papers he wouldn't sign them," Devin says. We sit there in silence. "Tell me something good."

I rack my brain trying to go up with something. "Do you remember when we were in Kindergarten? There was this one time when my mom and dad were both away on a trip so your mom watched me. We went to the zoo and ate ice cream and lollipops. Back then we had just started to become friends. I always used to wear bows in my hair, which I told everyone that I hated, but I actually loved. When we were at the zoo I lost my favorite one and we looked for it. And somehow we managed to find it," I say. I feel Devin smile.

"I remember that," he says. "Thank you. You can go to sleep now," Devin says. I nod and shut my eyes. But I can't seem to sleep. But I pretend to for Devin. I head Nick walk back into the room. I'm waiting for either one of them to say something, but they don't. And then I hear Devin say, "He did it." He says it so softly I'm not entirely sure that I heard him.

"I know," Nick says. There's a small pause. "It was only a matter of time. You couldn't have stopped it." I hear Devin sigh. "You should get something eat, how long has it been since you've eaten something?" Nick asks his brother.

"A couple of hours. Riley feed me pizza," he says. I try to figure out a way to wake up.

"When she wakes up, you guys should get something to eat and maybe you could take her home. She probably wants to change clothes and charge her phone and do whatever else," Nick says.

"I don't have a car, I rode in the ambulance with Mom and she took a cab," Devin tells Nick.

"You can take my car," Nick offers.

"Okay, I'll see what Riley thinks." They sit in silence. I pretend to wake up. Devin smiles when he sees me. "Do you want to go home?" Devin asks me. I sit up and rub my eyes.

"Hell no, I'm staying here," I say.

"Riley," he sighs. I frown.

"When do you ever call me Riley? I'm staying here," I say crossing my arms over my chest. I stand up and slip my heels back on. "I'm going to get something to eat. Do you guys want anything?"

"I'll go with you," Devin says. I nod and we walk down to the cafeteria. I grab yogurt, a protein shake and some dried fruit. Devin grabs a burger and fries. We sit down. We both stare at our food, not wanting to eat it. But I open the top of you yogurt and start eating. Devin bites into his burger. I open my shake and then chug half of it. I give the other half to Devin. "You can leave whenever you want, I don't expect you to say," he says.

"Why would I leave?" I ask him. He shrugs. I finish my yogurt and open the package of dried fruit.

"You should change your clothes," he tells me.

"Are you telling me that I stink? Because you don't smell great either," I say playfully. He gives me a tight lipped smile. We finish eating in silence. We walk back up to the room, but Devin stops me before I walk in. "What?"

"I can't go back yet," he tells me.

"So, you want to walk around?" I ask him. He nods, so we walk around.

"I have to go to the bathroom," Devin says. I nod and wait outside. I wait for about fifteen minutes.

"You okay in there?" I ask. There's no answer. I sigh and then walk into the bathroom. Devin's curled against the wall. He's been crying. I check the stalls to make sure that no one else is in here. Once I'm done I walk over to Devin. He hasn't really seemed to notice that I'm in here with him. I sit down next to him and rub his back. He puts his head on my lap and then starts to cry. All I do is hold him.

We don't talk.
