Chapter Twenty-Four
When I get to the hospital Mrs. Wright still hasn't woken up. They boys are in silence. I sit down next to Devin. Out of nowhere Nick sits up and says, "What about custody?"
"Excuse me?" Devin says.
"Who's supposed to take care of you? Mom, she isn't really able too. And she may not be able to, and Dad is...out of the picture now. So, who's supposed to take care of you?" Nick explains.
"I turned eighteen yesterday." A wave a nausea hits me in my stomach.
"Why didn't you say anything?" I ask. He doesn't answer me. "I'm getting a coffee," I say and then leave.
How did I miss Devin's birthday?
I walk down to the cafeteria and order a cappuccino, a mocha, a regular black coffee and a latte. I might as well bring coffee up. I clutch my stomach. God, I think. What a horrible birthday. His mom got sent to the hospital because of his shit lousy dad. And I, I forgot. I went to my fucking boyfriend's dance with his family.
The guy hands me the coffees in a little carrier. "Thanks," I say and then walk back up to the room. Devin's staring blankly ahead. I place the coffee on the small table and say, "I brought coffee."
Theo perks up. "What'd you get?" he asks.
"A black coffee, a cappuccino, a mocha and a latte," I say.
"Ooh, can I have the black coffee?" Theo says.
"No, that one's mine," I tell him. He grins.
"Well, can I have the cappuccino?" he asks me. I hand it to him.
"Can I have the latte?" Nick asks. I nod and hand it to him.
"I guess you get the mocha," I tell Devin.
"I'm okay," he says.
"Come on, it's basically hot chocolate," I say. He takes, but doesn't drink it. I look at Mrs. Wright. She's still sleeping. I yawn and look at my watch, it's 9:00. "I'm going to take a little nap," I say. Devin pats his lap. I ball up my sweatshirt and use it as a pillow. I fall asleep pretty quickly.
I yawn and rub my eyes. Devin's right behind me on the couch, my back is pressed against his stomach, our legs are tangled together and his arm is draped over my waist. I smile and look at Nick and Theo. They're both asleep in the chairs, they're holding hands. It's sweet. I look at Mrs. Wright, her eyes are open. "Devin, Devin, wake up," I say and shake him. He sits up and immediately looks over at his mom. His eyes widen when he sees her. He rushes over to her side in an instance. I wake up Nick and Theo.
"Mom," Devin gasps as he takes her hand. Nick does the same.
"Riley, why don't we go outside," Theo says. I nod and follow him outside. "I think they need some alone time," he says. I nod.
"Do you wanna go get a.." I pause to look at my watch. "three A.M. snack?" I finish. He grins.
"Sure." We walk down to the cafeteria. "How long have you known Devin?" he asks me.
"Since Kindergarten. How long have you known Nick?" I ask him.
"Five years," Theo answers me.
"How'd you two meet?" I ask him.
"You ask a lot of questions don't you?" I shrug. "We met at the bookstore that I own," he tells me.
"You own a bookstore? That's so cool!" I say. He smiles as we enter the cafeteria. There aren't many people, just a handful of doctors. "I'm gonna get pizza," I say. I grab two pieces of pepperoni and a Coke. Theo grabs the same and he pays for both. We sit down. We eat for a couple of minutes.
"I have kind of a weird question, but can I ask it?" Theo asks me.
"Sure," I say.
"Are you and Devin just best friends or are you...something more?" he asks me. I choke on the pizza I was in the process of swallowing.
"What? Why would you think that?" I ask him. I swallow a big drink of soda that he washes down the remaining pizza.
"It's just...the way he acts around you." I raise my eyebrows, waiting for a better explanation. He sighs and then says, "Devin's always watching you, even when you're not looking."
"So? Maybe he's protecting me? He thinks of me as a little sister," I say. Theo rolls his eyes.
"I have a little sister and he does not look at you the way I look at her," Theo says. This time I roll my eyes.
"Really? Than how does he look at me?" I ask Theo as I eat more of my pizza.
"He looks at you like, well, I don't really know how to describe it, but I guess he looks at you like he loves you. You know, romantically," Theo says. I start laughing.
"That's sooooo ridiculous," I say, laughing. He shrugs. "Okay, I have a question; do you like slasher movies from the '80's?"
He grins and says, "I love them."
