Chapter Twenty-Five
Mrs. Wright's been getting better slowly. It's been a month since her surgery. Devin and I do the same thing every day: we leave the hospital to go to school, after school we go to my house to shower since they don't have showers in the hospital, and then we go to the hospital.
She's supposed to be be released in two weeks. We have spring break in three. Her recovery's been good. Her motor functions are slowly coming back. The doctors are very happy with her recovery.
Mr. Wright left, I think. Devin said that most of his things are gone from the house and the divorce papers are signed. No one's seen him since the incident. I don't think anyone's complaining.
Nick and Theo are taking Devin and I to Florida for spring break. We'll be there for five days. I'm excited and I think Devin is too. I've been getting to know Theo better. I like him, we have a lot in common. Nick and Devin are growing close again.
But, I guess that the four us spend every second that we can together in the room with Mrs. Wright. So, yeah, we're pretty close. My parent's don't mind me staying in the hospital.
"Friday the 13th, best movie," Theo says. I roll my eyes.
"The sixth one," I tell him.
"Nuh-uh. It was the first one, you can never beat the first movie," he tells me.
"Yeah, usually that's true. But in the sixth movie, the rules changed. For one, they were going after Jason, two: there wasn't a boob scene, three: the relationship with Tommy and the other chick was actually good-and he wasn't psycho or perverted-and four: they actually managed to imprison him, since he can't be killed," I tell him. Devin nods.
"She's right, I watched all of the movies with her," Devin says. We fistbump and Mrs. Wright smiles. Theo looks like he's about to say something but stops himself when Nick walks in. Nick smiles at his mother. He hands me a coffee, Devin a soda and Theo a coffee.
"Thanks," I say. He nods. The doctors come by and check on Mrs. Wright. Her recovery is going very well, they tell us. After a little while Devin and I walk down to the cafeteria. We get food and then sit down.
"Are you excited for spring break?" I ask him. It's a super lame question. I don't know why I asked it.
"Yeah, it should be fun," he says. He's pretty quiet these days. I think the entire thing with his mom really messed with him. We finish eating.
We head back to the room. I brush my teeth and change. Devin does the same and then we crawl onto the couch that's become our bed. "Night Dev," I say.
"Night Riley," he says.
The next day I pack our bags for the trip.
