Chapter Thirty-Five
I think I'm ready to leave Florida. Ready to leave behind the memories. Try to forget what happened. When I'm packing up my stuff my eyes keep wandering to the one wall. "You ready to leave?" Devin asks me, his hand brushes mine as he reaches for the book on the bed.
"Huh?" I ask him.
"I asked if you were ready to leave," Devin repeats. I mage a weak nod. "I'm going to keep reading this," he says. He's holding my book. I nod again. I grab my messenger bag and my other bag. Devin walks out, leaving me.
I take one last look around, to make sure we haven't forgotten anything before I take one last look at the wall. I shut the door and join the others in the hallway.
We're all going to the airport, but Ellie is taking a flight back to where she lives with her parents. Her flight is slightly earlier than ours. We have an hour and a half flight, and then a three hour layover. And then another flight. So, that should be fun.
I'm dressed in ripped jeans, a tank top, a zip up hoodie and sneakers. Devin's dressed in dark Levi's and a formfitting long sleeve.
I don't know why I notice.
Devin and I cram into the very back of the taxi, Nick, Theo and Ellie go into the middle row. We drive to the airport. Once we get there, we go through baggage check and then through security.
Ellie, Nick, Theo and I have all gone through security without a problem, and Devin has yet to go. He makes it through fine, but his bag gets stopped. He looks panicked as one of the people working security starts to search his bag. The person pauses.
"Sir, is there anything in this bag that is a liquid, or a metal, or a jewellery of some kind, that I should be aware of?" the person asks him. He swallows and darts another panicked look at me.
"No," he says. He digs in the pocket of his jeans and hands me a twenty. "Riley, for some reason I'm craving one of those coffees that you always get. Will you get get me one?" he asks. He looks over at the security person.
"Don't expect any change," I say. He nods and the guy continues to root through his bag. I start walking away and turn around to say something, I see a flash of gold. I shrug and walk to one of the coffee shops. I get myself a large coffee with a shot of hazelnut and two shots of espresso. I get Devin a mocha and pay. I pocket the rest of the money and walk over to where they are.
"So what'd you have on you? Steroids?" I ask Devin as I hand him his coffee.
"I had a small bottle of water that I forgot about," he tells me.
"Mmmhmm," I say.
"Where's my change?" he asks me as we start to walk to our flight gate.
"Coffee was really expensive," I say. "What gate are you?" I ask Ellie. She looks at her hand.
"Uh, I'm at F2," she says.
"We're at G4," I tell her. She nods. We stop at her gate. "Well, it was really nice to meet you. Have a safe flight," I tell her. I hug her. I step to the side and Nick and Devin both do their goodbyes. Theo goes last. They talk for a couple of seconds before hugging. She boards her plane and we walk to our gate.
Our flight boards in a half hour. I sit down in a chair and stick my earbuds in. I watch people go by. Theo and Nick leave to go get breakfast. Devin sits down next to me. I remember that I saw a flash of gold.
"Hey, what was that gold thing in your bag?" I ask him.
"Chocolate," he says. I nod.
"You want one?" I ask, handing him one of my earbuds. He nods and sticks it in his ear. Theo and Nick come back. We have to board the plane in a few minutes. They announce that our plane is now boarding.
Once we're on the plane I take my earbuds out. I stick one in and give the other one to Devin. "Do you mind if I take a nap?" I ask Devin. He shakes his head and wraps his arm around my shoulders. I put my head on his chest and I'm already sleeping when the plane takes off.
Devin shakes me awake. "We're landing. Can I have the second book?" he asks. He holds up Shatter me. I rub my eyes and dig in my bag. I hand him the second book. He hands me the first. I put that back in my bag and dig for my gum. I take two pieces. Devin holds out his hand expectantly. I drop a piece into his hand. "Come on, I've got a bigger mouth than yours," he says.
My gaze drops to his mouth and my cheeks flush as I remember.
I drop another piece in his hand. He pops both pieces into his mouth with a self satisfied smirk. I take my sweatshirt off and shove it into my bag. We exit the plane.
"So, what should we do for three hours?" Theo asks. I shrug.
"I'm gonna walk around. I love airports, but I honestly don't care what guys do," I say.
"I'll go with you," Devin says. I nod.
"Well, we'll go get something to eat, but meet back here in two and a half hours," Theo says. We both nod and we go left and they go right.
"So, do you want to get something to eat?" Devin asks. I shrug.
"Maybe later," I tell him.
"You don't eat enough these days," he tells me, poking me in the ribs.
"I eat plenty, I could out eat you," I tell him.
"Prove it," Devin says.
"Fine," I say.
And that's how Devin and I end up eating two pizzas. "Oooooooh," Devin moans clutching his stomach. He ate ten pieces of pizza. I ate twelve. I rub my stomach. Devin looks like he's going to vomit.
"Ha! I ate more than," I singsong. He makes an unintelligible noise. His head hits the table. I laugh triumphantly. I throw away the rest of the pizza. "Do you want dessert?" I ask Devin. He runs to a garbage can and then he vomits. I do what a best friend should do: I rub his back and try not to vomit.
He stumbles back to his seat. I hand him a napkin and he wipes his mouth. He drinks some water. I hand him a few mints. He eats them and then says, "Thanks." I nod.
"I'm not going to say it, but that was pathetic," I tell him.
"I really thought I had it," he says. I laugh. I look at my watch and we have about fifteen minutes before we have to meet Theo and Nick.
"We should go," I tell Devin. He nods. He gets up and stumbles slightly. I sling my bag over my shoulder and walk over to him. His puts his arm around my shoulders and I slip my arm around his waist. "This is so pathetic," I mutter under my breath.
"It is," Devin says, reminding me of how close we are. We finally manage to make it to the gate. Theo and Nick both raise their eyebrows when they see us.
"What happened to you?" Nick asks.
"We had a competition to see who could eat more pizza and he vomited. I won, by the way," I tell them. Devin groans.
They let people start to board the plane. I sit by the window and Devin sits by me. "Do you wanna watch a movie?" he asks.
"Sure," I say. He pulls out his laptop and swears when it's dead.
"I have a movie on my phone, we can watch that," Devin says. So we end up watching Step Brothers.
I end up practically on top of him because I want to see the screen. My legs are angled toward him and are over his lap. My arms are on his chest. I probably could have just put my head close to his but this seemed like the better idea for some reason.
Devin seems to be less likely to vomit. So the plane ride might not be so bad. We've been on the plane for a little bit longer than a hour. We still have about three left.
Thunder rumbles and you can hear the raindrops. It just started to rain. Devin doesn't look particularly thrilled. We haven't had any turbulence, but there's still time. The plane starts to almost shake and it lurches up and down. We hit a rough patch of air and Devin's hand flies to my leg.
Or rather my thigh. His thumb is right where there's a rip in my jeans, on my upper thigh. His fingers trace patterns on my leg. I look over at him desperately. I need him to stop before I do something that I really shouldn't do. His eyes are closed and his head is pressed against the back of his seat.
"This is a fucking nightmare," he mutters. He has that right. My heart is beating fast in my chest and I'm hoping he'll just pass it off as me being nervous.
"Yeah," I say. I'm acutely aware of each of his fingertips. "Are you-are you okay?" I ask him, swallowing hard as he turns to look at me. His gaze is intense.
"Just a little bit freaked out," he says. I nod.
"Well, why don't we try breathing." He stares blankly at me. "Well, you know. Deep breaths in and out," I say. "Just look into my eyes and take deep breaths. Do you think you can do that?" I ask him.
"Yeah, I'll try it," he says. This is such a terrible idea.
"Okay, breathe in and breathe out. In and out." I repeat this a few times. His eyes stay locked on mine for the entire time, his fingers still tracing patterns.
I'm transfixed by his eyes. They're grey, but there's flecks of silver and green. It seems like they're endlessly deep. I swallow again nervously. The plane lurches-I'm not even sure what way-and my hand ends up cupping his face.
Something sparks in his his eyes and-
"Attention all passengers. Due to the weather we are going to land in Texas. We're sorry for the inconvenience, further information will be given upon landing. We'll be landing in five minutes," the Captain announces.
I jerk myself away from Devin and angle my body towards the window. His hand falls from my leg. My leg still burns from his touch. I shove all of my stuff into my bag and wait for the flight to end.
I must be going insane. If I'm not already, I'm going to be soon.
Once we're off the plane they tell us about the layover. We're staying at a hotel here for the rest of the night and then we have a flight in the morning. It's storming hard, lots of thunder and rain and even lighting.
The hotel is expense free, due to the inconvenience. I'm anxious to get home. Even though we've only been gone for a few days. The room is really nice, there's three beds, two couches and and two bathrooms, there's also a couple of TV's.
I throw my stuff on the bed closest to the window. Devin throws his stuff on the bed too. "There's another bed," I say.
"It's fine, I'll just sleep here," he says.
"Are you sure?' I ask him. He nods.
