Chapter Sixty-One
"I'll go make a coffee run," TJ says. The coloring process is a very long process. Mia's just started to put tinfoil in my hair after she colors it.
"Okay, get me an americano with cream and cinnamon," I tell him.
"Vanilla latte," Mia says. TJ nods and gets up. "So, who even is that guy?" she asks me.
"He is-was-my best friend's friend," I say.
"Uh-huh, why do you say 'was'?" she asks me.
"Well, my best friend isn't really my best friend or friend anymore," I tell Mia.
"And you're changing your hair color to try and get over your best friend. I'm assuming you liked him," Mia says.
"How-how did you even know that?" I ask her.
"I've seen a lot of breakups," she says.
"Oh, no. We-we weren't dating," I say.
"Ouch," Mia says. She has her hair cut in a short boyish way.
TJ walks back, balancing three drinks in his hand. He's on his other hand texting or something. He looks up and then looks around.
"TJ," I say. He looks at me startled.
"Shit! I didn't recognize you. You kinda look like a monster with all that...going on," he says gesturing to my hair. I do have a lot of tinfoil in.
"Thanks," I say sarcastically.
"Here," he says handing me what does not look like an americano. He hands Mia her latte.
"Hey TJ?" I ask him. He looks up from his phone.
"Yeah?" he asks.
"What is this?" I ask him.
"A caramel frappuccino with extra whipped cream and extra caramel. Oh and an extra shot of espresso," TJ says.
"What the fuck? I asked you for an americano," I tell him.
"I like them. I have one too," he says. He looks at my face, "Okay, just try it." I stare at him warily and then take a drink. It's actually not too bad. I keep drinking it.
Mia finishes putting the color in and then I have to get sit under a weird bowl shaped thing. TJ sits in the seat next to me.
"So why are you here?" TJ asks me.
"I'm staying with my cousin," I tell him. "What about you?"
"I'm staying with my cousins. Landon and Shonda," he says.
"No way. Shit, no. Your cousins are sharing the same house as my cousin. How weird is that?" I ask him. He shrugs. "So when did you get here?' I ask him.
"Earlier today," TJ says.
One question has been burning at my mind, but I don't want to ask it.
"Have-do you-have you talked to Devin recently?" I ask him.
"Yeah, my man Dev is bangin' this real hot chick," TJ says.
Of course Devin wouldn't have cared. Wouldn't have been phased. He's always been the guy that sleeps with every girl. Why would anything that I would have done changed anything?
"Is he doing well?" I ask, swallowing.
"Yeah, he Dev. He bounce back like a cat," TJ says. Apparently whenever TJ talks about his friends, or is around them, his accent comes back.
"Okay," I say. I try not to feel hurt. Which is ridiculous.
After another forty five minutes Mia's cutting my hair. And it's really pretty, it's like a really dark red tinted with brown. Mia's cutting layers to frame my face. The color of my hair makes my eyes pop. It also compliments my natural lip color, which is a bright pink.
"Hey, cut that piece just a little bit shorter and don't forget to style her hair in messy waves," TJ says.
"How do you know all this shit?" I ask him.
"My sister's a hairdresser," TJ says.
"So?" I ask him.
"So, I spent a lot of summers at her shop," he explains. I stare at him. "I thought I'd pick up a bunch of chicks." Mia bursts out laughing and I do too.
"How stupid are you? Did you take one too many hits on the head?" Mia asks him. He throws up his hands defensively. Mia styles my hair in messy beach waves. She examines her work and then digs one of the draws of her desk and pulls out a bobby pin. She pulls a piece of my hair from the right side and pull it back in a twist and secures it with a bobby pin.
I look pretty. I look different, but I look great. I stand up and thank Mia. I walk to the front desk and pay. And then I walk out with TJ.
"So, now what?" I ask him.
"You need a new look. New hair; new look," TJ says. I nod. I keep looking at my reflection in mirrors. I love my hair. "Let's stop and get something to eat well we figure out our game plan," TJ says. I nod. We stop at a cafe. TJ orders me another frappuccino and come back with a donut and a bowl of soup with bread and two spoons. He sets the stuff down at our table and then sits down. "Your hair looks good," he says.
"Thanks," I say. I add, "You should know that I am not in any, way, shape or form attracted to you. Don't be getting any ideas." He nods. He hands me a spoon and I start eating the soup.
"So, what inspired this big change of yours?" TJ asks. I don't see what the point of hiding it from him is.
"I fell in love with someone. And I told them how I felt and they didn't feel the same way," I explain.
"Do you mind if I ask who?" TJ asks. I shake my head.
"Devin."
It's hard to admit everything out loud, but it's also a relief.
"Okay, so let's do nails fist. French manicure. And then when can do an outfit. And...have you ever thought about another ear piercing? You could get an industrial one," TJ says. He seems to be unfazed about my confession.
"What's an industrial earring?" I ask him.
"It's the one that goes through the top of your ear. It looks kind of like a pin with a ball on both ends," TJ explains.
