Chapter Four
I've spent every night at Devin's house for a week and a half. My mom understands. But my dad might be getting suspicious. Devin, on the other hand seems to get more and more quiet each night. He'll be okay.
I haven't seen Alex in a while. He's gotten swept away into the popular clique.
Alex walks up to me when I'm at my locker right before lunch. "Hey, I know this is gonna seem stupid but, would you like to go on a date?" he asks. I nearly drop the book that I grabbed.
"Excuse me?" I say. I'm waiting for him to say: Surprise! Haha, I got you!
"Would you like to um, shit, go on a date with me? To like the movies or something?" he says. He nervously runs a hand through his blonde hair.
"Um, I've only known you a couple of days," I say. Why is he asking me? There must be a thousand other girls that would date him.
"I know, I want to get to know you better," Alex says. He looks really nervous in a cute way.
"Well, okay. Yeah," I say. He lights up.
"Okay, I'll pick you up on Friday at 5:00," he says. I nod and then dumbfoundedly stumble into the cafeteria. I grab a yogurt, a protein shake and coffee. I grab two spoons for the yogurt and then walk to our table. I hand Devin the protein shake and the yogurt.
"Sup Dev?" I ask him. He shrugs. "Eat, come on. You have football today." He picks up a spoon and chugs the protein shake. "So, the strangest thing happened today," I tell him. He looks up.
"What happened?" he asks.
"Well, um, Alex asked me out," I tell him. His grey eyes widen. Today they're dark grey. They flash with something that makes them darker. Anger? Jealousy? I must be seeing things.
"And?" he asks.
"And I said yes." He mutters something to himself.
"When is it?" Devin asks me. I grab the yogurt and start eating.
"Friday, five o'clock," I tell him. He nods again to himself. Why is he acting so strange?
"Okay," he says.
"Do you want me to sleepover tonight?" I ask him. He shakes his head. "Do you want to sleepover?"
"I'm fine, you don't need to take care of me," he says, shoving his lunch forward and walking out. I pull out my book and read. I'm used to his weird mood changes. I have history and study hall with Devin so I'll see him later to make sure he's okay.
I can't believe I have a date with Alex, it's strange. I'm still puzzled over that when I leave school. Friday's tomorrow! Shit! What am I supposed to wear? Oh, shit. Devin's my only friend. What am I supposed to do? More importantly: why do I care?
Logic kicks in when I'm at home. We're just going to a movie, I don't need to dress up fancy. I can wear skinny jeans and a shirt. I sigh and fall down in my bed.
My mom walks by my room and she stops when she sees me. "Oh, you're actually home?" Mom says.
"Yeah, guess what? I have a date tomorrow," I tell her. Her jaw drops a little bit.
"With who? Devin?" she asks.
"No, why I would I go on a date with Devin? He's like my brother. It's with Alex, the kid from across the street," I tell her. She smiles.
"Is he nice? Alex?" Mom says.
"Yeah, but I guess I don't know him too well," I tell her. She nods. She continues to pry me for the details about my date and then once she has everything that she wants she leaves. I look at my phone.
I call Devin. It goes to his voicemail. "Hey, just calling to make sure you're okay. Let me know how it goes with you parents. Bye." I stare at my phone on my bed for a couple of seconds before I grab it and my finger lingers over the call button. But then I remember that it's Devin and he's probably hooking up with some skanky chick. I throw my phone back down and walk to my closet. I grab dark skinny jeans, a tight shirt that I've never worn before and a zip up hoodie. I lay them out and then go downstairs for dinner.
