Chapter Forty-Two

"What ride do you want to do?" Devin asks me. I look around. We've already done just about every ride. This has been the best birthday by far, all thanks to Devin.

"Why don't we get something to eat? I'm hungry," I tell him. He nods. We get a hot greasy pizza and two huge sodas. We sit down at a table. I scarf down a couple peices. I smile at Devin. "Thank you," I say. Devin looks up.

"For what?" he asks me.

"For giving me a great birthday," I say. He nods.

"It's the least that I could do," Devin tells me. We finish eating.

"Well, I think I'm ready to leave. We both have to get ready for that party of yours," I tell him. He nods. He throws out stuff away and then buys me cotton candy before we walk to his car. "So, um, how many people did you invite to the party?" I ask him.

He rubs the back of his neck, a sign of something that's not good. "Oh, you know. Just a couple," he says.

"Devin! Who did you invite?" I ask him.

"Just like a couple of my boys from the football team," Devin says.

"Like Gabe and Matt and Ryan?" All of the guys on his football team are complete assholes.

"And TJ, Mason, Caden, Eli, Oliver and they maybe all invited their girlfriends," he says. I groan.

"Please don't tell me that TJ's still dating Aubrey," I say. He shakes his head.

"No, he isn't but Mason is. And do you remember Yogurt Lab girl? Well she's dating Eli now," he says.

"Fuck! How do you keep up on all of that shit? But it's your funeral. They're going to trash your brother's apartment and you're going to pay-probably in flesh," I tell him. He shrugs. "Did you get enough booze to feed their addiction?" I ask.

"Who buys booze for a party these days? Kids bring their own shit. But yes, I did get some," Devin says. He shoots me a side glance.

"Did you invite Alex?" I ask him.

"Who?" He actually looks like he doesn't know.

"Alex, my other friend. Blonde hair, brown eyes...ring a bell?" I ask him.

"Oh, yeah. That guy with the pretentious smile," Devin says. I hit his arm.

"Do you even know what pretentious means?" I ask him. He nods. He pulls up at my house. "Thank you. I had a really great time. See you later," I say as I hop out of the car. I wave to him and walk to my house. I say hi to my parents and then walk upstairs.

I throw my stuff on the bed and then lay out my outfit. I turn on the shower and then wash my hair and my body. I use a lot of the really nice smelling soap. Once I'm done I blow dry my hair and then walk back to my room. I get dressed and sit in front of my mirror.

I do eyeliner and put a silver eyeshadow behind it. I also do mascara and then do a light lipgloss. I have high heels that I could wear but instead I grab my sneakers. I also grab a sweatshirt. I walk downstairs. "Bye Mom, bye Dad! I'm going to Devin's! Love you!" I yell to them I grab my car keys and then follow the directions to Nick and Theo's apartment. It's around ten or eleven when I get there. I took a little nap before my shower.

"Oh, shit," I mutter once I get to the apartment. I can hear the music. I walk in and take the elevator up to the seventh floor. I push open the door, which is unlocked. The music is blaring from speakers. But that's not the only thing that's assaulting my senses. The smell of alcohol hinted with weed is thick in the air. There's a whole lot of people are crammed into this hellhole. There's also lots of red cups and beer bottles and cans.

I push through people trying to find Devin. I try not to vomit when I see a condom wrapper. "That's gross," I mutter. I keep walking and shove through more and more people until finally I see Devin.

He's drunk.

He's also sitting on a couch with some of his football buddies. He lights up into this big stupid dopey grin when he sees me. "Riley!" Devin slurs. I hear one of his friends mutter something about how hot my ass is. I'm pretty sure that it was TJ, which isn't surprising, he's always seemed like a pervert.

"Can we talk?" I ask him.

"Anything you have to say in front of me you can say in front of my brothers." He gestures lazily at the guys on the couch. I grab his ear and yank him out of the room into the kitchen.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?" I ask him. He takes a drink out a cup. I take it off his hand and sniff it. "Are you drinking straight tequila? How much have you had?" I ask him as I dump the cup out in the sink. Devin grabs a half full beer bottle and drinks that. "Devin! Did you not hear me? This place is a fucking disaster!" I scream at him. I have to scream to be heard.

"Happy birthday!" He must be really, really drunk. I've seen him drunk before but he seems to have built up a tolerance. Normally he's more coherent.

"Do you have a room here?" I ask him. He takes another drink. I take the bottle out of his hand and also dump it in the sink. "Do you have a room here?" I ask him again.

"There's lots of rooms! Hey! Caden! Whassup my man?" They do a weird bro hug thing. I grab Devin by his ear and lead him into a bedroom. I'm guessing it's the spare.

"What the fuck is wrong with with? This is your problem, and your brother's apartment. And they're going to burn this place to the ground. So you might want to do something," I tell him. His eyes are glassed over. He takes a couple of stumbles toward me.

And then his arms lock around my waist. "There's something I have to tell you," he slurs. I try to shove him off of me even though I don't really want to. But I don't really have much success because he weighs a hell of a lot more than me.

"Devin! You need to deal with this!" I yell.

"Riley, my Riley. There's something that I have to you. I..." And then he passes out. On top of me. I groan.

"Shit!" I yell as loud as I can. I squirm out from under him and grab my phone. I press call. "Alex you better get over here."

Alex gets there ten minutes later. "This is pretty bad," he says. We're in the spare room. I moved a pillow under Devin's head and he's still sleeping.

"How do we get them to leave?" I ask him. Alex shrugs.

"Maybe we call the police or something. I've never been in this particular situation before," he says. I nod.

"So our game plan is to call the police? Or do we say that we called the police?" I ask Alex.

"Uhh, why don't we just say that we did. Especially because he's obviously been drinking," he says. I nod. I take off my sweatshirt and tie my hair back into a ponytail. It's entirely to hot in here.

"Okay," I say. I walk out and try to asses where I'm at. I unplug the speakers. "Everyone! Get the fuck out! The police are coming! You hear those sirens in the background? That's the po-po! So I'll repeat myself: Get the fuck out!" People start running to the door. "Huh, that was easier than I thought," I say. I herd the rest of the people out of the living room and kitchen. I look in the main bedroom and I see TJ and this other girl getting it on. I gag and I feel bile in my throat.

"Get the fuck out. Police are coming," I say. I walk out because I don't want to see that. I hear them shove their clothes back on and then run out and leave. I look at my watch. It's one. It took a little while to get shit together before I called Alex. I sigh and fall back onto the couch. Alex sits next to me.

"Where were you today? I missed you at school," Alex says.

"Oh," I say, "I was with Devin. We skipped and went to a park and then an amusement park," I tell him. I leave out the part where we went swimming in our underwear and how desperately I wanted Devin to kiss me.

"Okay, did your parents know that you skipped?" Alex asks.

"Devin said he worked it out with them. But it was really sweet, what he did," I explain. Alex nods. He grabs something from his bag and hands it to me.

"Here, I know it's kind of lame, but happy birthday," Alex says. It's a small wrapped box.

"You really shouldn't have," I say. He shrugs. I tear the wrapping paper off and open the box. Inside there's a small bracelet. It's like two machetes sideways that connect to make a bracelet. "Is this-is this what I think it is?" I ask him. He nods.

"Yep, Friday the 13th franchise bracelet," he says. I squeal and hug him.

"What time do you have to be home?" I ask Alex. He shrugs.

"My curfew is...one thirty. So I probably have to go," he says. I hug him again.

"Thank you, for being here. And for helping me," I tell him as I walk him to the door. He nods and then steps over a couple of beer cans.

"Yeah, no problem. Let me know if you need any help," he says. I nod and then I go to shut the door, but he blocks it. He bends down and his lips brush mine quickly. He pulls back and then smiles and says, "Good night Riley." And then promptly leaves.

"Night," I say softly. I twirl the bracelet on my finger and smile. I yawn and then walk over to the bathroom where I take off my makeup and then I crawl under the sheets in the spare room. I'll worry about cleanup tomorrow. It doesn't take me long to fall asleep.
