Lost in Transition
This is a sequel to "Gauri Kumari Sharma : A Woman of Persistence"
Gauri walked into the room after an exhausting day. Svetlana's question still ranged in her mind. But she chose to avoid it. No, it was her duty. As a daughter-in-law, as a wife. Wife! That brought a sad smile on her lips. Her mind wandered back to a beautiful memory.
It was a day full of saddening incidents. Shivaay and Anika had left the previous day and the house has lost its charm. It was pretty late at night and Omkara was talking with Tej. Gauri was in the room preparing the bed.
She knew Omkara would come back angry and was mentally prepared to console him. The door was suddenly opened and shut which broke Gauri's chain of thoughts. A dejected Omkara entered and Gauri looked at him worried. "Omkaraji?" she called out and he looked at her. She sat beside him and he hugged her tightly.
"I'm failing him Gauri. I'm failing as a brother" he said and Gauri kept muttering that it was okay. He looked up from the hug and slowly looked into her eyes. He saw nothing but love. Love for him. The emotions did their work as his lips slowly advanced towards hers.
Gauri closed her eyes the moment their lips met. Passion took over as he slowly roamed his hands through her luscious hair. The lights soon went off as the night witnessed the unplanned union.
Gauri's thoughts came to a halt as Omkara turned in his sleep. It's been three weeks but still she was not over it. She smiled at him and closed her eyes in an attempt to catch some sleep. But each time she closes them, his promises flashes which stabs her heart.
Their togetherness now seemed like an unachievable dream to her. She drew in a sharp breathe and once again closed her eyes, preparing herself for the next day.
Morning soon approached and Gauri was ready for the day. She worshiped her lord, gave medicines to Dadi, and was going to the kitchen when she heard someone calling her.
"Bhabhi" she stopped and turned to look at the only family member who seemed to notice that she too was a human.
"Rudy Bhaiyya" she said with a smile and approached him. He returned a bright one but it dimmed as he noticed her exhaustion. "You should rest Bhabhi" he said concerned. "I'm fine Rudy Bhaiyya. I'm used to it" she whispered the last words.
"Bhabhi, if you ever feel the need for help, remember that you have a brother. I'll always be there for you Bhabhi" he said and tears welled up in Gauri's eyes. "I know" she said with a smile and walked to the kitchen while Rudra stood there sighing at the situation.
Far yet not too far, stood Svetlana, listening to their conversation. A mere exchange of words with a thousand hidden meanings. Though she'd always considered the youngest Obro harmless, she knew he was the wisest. He had the capability to analyze situations which both his brothers somewhere lacked.
The only reason she liked this Obro was his behaviour towards Gauri. Something appreciable. He was the only one to look out for her. He himself was a reflection of Gauri. Sad inside but cheerful outside. Svetlana walked back to distract her mind from the mess.
Gauri was in the kitchen when she heard rushed footsteps. Before she could turn, someone embraced her from behind. "Omkaraji" she had realized his touch immediately. Omkara smiled as he inhaled the scent of her hair.
Gauri, on the other hand, felt anger boiling up inside her. This was not fine. He cannot always take things for granted. But, wasn't it her duty? To find happiness in his happiness and to grieve in his sorrows?
"I'm so happy Gauri. Shivaay and Anika Bhabhi are coming back" he said to which her eyes twinkled with happiness. She was indeed happy that they were coming back. "Gauri, everything has to be perfect. The light of this house is coming back. I know you'll do everything perfectly. I'm just too excited" he said and left as his phone rang.
Gauri stood there with a smile as she finally was able to comprehend everything. It was always his happiness and sorrows. Her feelings never rose as a topic to be discussed. She shook her head and sighed before returning to the chores.
Shivaay and Anika were welcomed with pomp and grandeur. The house once became lively after weeks. Gauri stood at a corner observing everything. She had a small smile playing on her lips but her heart was in chaos.
Suddenly, she felt a wave of nausea hitting her as she rushed to the nearest guest room. For the next few hours, Gauri was nowhere to be seen. But as usual, no one seemed to notice.
Rudra jumped with happiness as he along with Gauri entered the Oberoi Mansion around afternoon. He was talking animatedly to which Gauri chuckled.
"O my god Bhabhi! I'm so happy!" Rudra exclaimed happily and Gauri smiled genuinely after many days. She was truly happy. "Bhabhi, take rest. You really need it" Rudra said and Gauri nodded her head and walked away.
"Gauri! Where were you? I was searching for you" Omkara who entered the room asked as he saw Gauri sitting on the bed with closed eyes. "I had gone to the doctor" she replied.
Omkara frowned at that. "What happened?" he asked but she didn't reply. Instead, she stood up and went towards the window.
That's when Omkara noticed the file in her hand. But that was not the problem now. He stood up and went beside her and wrapped his arms around her petite frame. "Why is my wife angry at me?" he asked and Gauri smiled.
"Wife? Who? Me? I thought I existed only when you are in need" she said and he frowned. "What are you talking?" he asked and she turned around. "Nothing" she said and moved away but he caught her hand.
"Is something wrong?" he asked to which Gauri again remained silent. "You're scaring me Gauri" he said. At this she forwarded the file towards him.
He opened the file and his eyes widened in surprise. "You are?"
"Pregnant" she completed the sentence and he smiled in ecstasy. He didn't know how to react. He moved forward to hug her but she took a step back.
"Gauri?" he called out but she turned away. "What happened love?" he asked hugging her from behind. "Love?" she asked with a sardonic chuckle.
"Yes, don't you believe in it? The supreme emotion" Omkara, who mistook the chuckle for happiness asked and she smiled. "I do believe in the love a mother has for her child. The purest form of love. I do believe in the love the child has for its parents. It's beautiful" she said and he smiled.
"Not that one. The love shared by a man and woman. The most intimate feeling shared between two hearts. The love I have for you" he ended in a husky tone.
"Ohh, that one. That, my dear husband, I had lost faith long back. I don't believe in it anymore. For me, now, that's not love. It's just the happiness of having everything needed. Love, to me, is now alien" she said and Omkara stared at her.
She turned around and held his hands. "I can be a daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, wife. But not the love of your life. I don't feel that I should waste my time there. I'll be a good mother and an ideal wife. But, dearest husband, not the love of your life. Not anymore. Because the love we shared do not exist anymore. It was lost in transition" she said and loosened her grip. With a soft smile, she walked away while Omkara stood there taking in the words.
She's right. That was the only thought that crossed his mind. He smiled despite the tears that threatened to spill. He respects her, adores her, loves her and will always do. But right now, it was not their time even if it was.
He has to care for her, for their child. He sighed at fate's play. Why was he blaming fate? Oh yes! After all, accepting faults were never the part of being an Oberoi.
Svetlana watched with a smile as Gauri walked out with her head held high. Even though she was unaware of what happened inside, she knew that Gauri has learnt to respect her wishes.
Rudra merrily approached his sister-in-law though he knew what must've happened inside. He smiled as he heard her talking freely after ages. This time, he was not going to stand with his brother.
Omkara now knew her worth, and was regretting the lost time. But not every time life blesses you with second chances!
That's it. A love lost in transition!
