21. DNA

It was so hard to focus.

Kay was definitely saying something, her lips were moving, but all he could do was analyze their shape, long for their taste. The fact that she was still naked wasn't helping at all.

"Kyle?"

"Huh?"

She grinned at him. "You didn't hear a word I said, did you?"

She knew him well. He pursed his lips, not wanting to admit it even if she was right. With a sigh, she picked up his t-shirt off the floor and pulled it over her head.

"Better?"

Nope, not at all. Seeing her wearing his clothes made everything seem more real. All he could focus on now was taking the t-shirt off.

"Jimmy and Jessie will be here," she said, the words rare and pointed. "With Tom and Angie so that you can confirm he looks like Sam."

Oh, right. That. And Jimmy and Jessie had definitely done enough by staying out all night. He needed to focus. They had enough time to throw clothes around once they got their own room.

"Okay, yes. Copy that." And he rolled out of bed and put clothes on. When he glanced over his shoulder, he saw her in the same position, pouting. "What? Wasn't this what I was supposed to be doing?"

"I guess. I mean, yes, of course. But..." She let out a disappointed groan.

Well, at least they were on the same page. So he leaned across the bed and planted a kiss on her lips. "We'll get back to it. Let's just fix some stuff first."

"True." She began searching for her own clothes on the floor. "And what we have to fix isn't easy at all."

She could say that again, but it didn't really matter because they were together again so whatever it was could suck it.

They'd just managed to make themselves presentable and arrange the bed when there was a knock on the door.

"You don't have to knock," he called.

"That's not true," Jessie called back, the amusement in her voice obvious.

Kyle's stomach did a weird summersault at the thought of seeing Tom. This was already weird enough, having a Jerry looking alike he actually liked, but Sam was different. Sam was his baby brother and Kyle loved him.

His nerves were unfounded since Jessie was alone. She looked exhausted, and he was even more grateful for her sacrifice.

"You okay?" he asked.

"Yeah." She plopped into her usual armchair, massaging her forehead. Her current posture was a long way from how she'd curled up into it last time.

"You look exhausted," Kay noticed.

Jessie glanced at her between her fingers and grinned. "So do you."

Kay blushed but grinned back and Kyle was very grateful that they seemed to like each other.

"I actually did get some sleep."

"I'm fine. I just had a bit too much beer."

This was interesting. "Jimmy took you out drinking?"

"Initially, no. He took me to a park which was fine and dandy until the paparazzi caught us." Jessie groaned and Kyle could definitely relate. "Macy's going to kill us. First you and Kay, now Jimmy and me."

"Maybe they'll run with a revenge story?" Kay suggested. "And then you can have a grand making up."

"Huh, that's actually not a bad idea." Jessie straightened in the armchair. "Maybe we could he all apologetic during tonight's concert?"

Kyle hated to pretend now even more than before, but she made an excellent point. At least now there was no danger of misunderstanding.

"Sure, why not?"

"Because it sucks?" Jessie asked, sinking her face in her hands. "I don't want to pretend anymore, but I never thought I'd..." She halted and raises widened eyes to them. "I fell in love with him, didn't I?"

Most likely. Kyle fought to keep a straight face, but Kay wasn't having it.

"I don't blame you. Jimmy is amazing. Probably more amazing than you know." She hesitated. "Obviously then I know."

"Um, what?" Kyle asked, but then suddenly remembered that Kay had actually kissed him and he suddenly wanted to punch Jimmy in the face.

"He's a kickass mechanic," Kay provided. "And he reads quantum mechanics in his free time. And he's worked so hard for his entire life."

Oh, that. Now Kyle wanted to punch his idiot parents. Why had they kept the boring twin? Though it was probably not Jerry's fault that he was so uptight.

Right on cue, the door opened and Jimmy walked through. Jessie hopped out of her armchair and charged at him to hug him. Kyle was however distracted by the people coming on behind him.

"Holy shit," he breathed.

Who wad obviously Tom glanced at him warily, leaning against the closed door. The black-haired girl who was obviously Angie rushed to Kay, but he couldn't take his eyes off Tom.

He was just as tall as Sam, had the same jet black hair and built. He was obviously skinnier than Sam and wore sunglasses, but apart from that... Kyle would've probably confused him for his baby brother.

"Is he?" Jimmy asked.

Kyle's gaze moved to him and it was even more sureal. He'd gotten used to Jimmy who, given his attitude, could be easily differentiated from Jerry. But seeing them both... He just nodded, a bit lost for words.

"And do you have any idea why?" Tom asked. Even his voice was very similar to Sam's.

"Except the obvious one?" Kyle asked.

"Also, yeah. Nice to meet you. I've heard loads about you. And apparently Kay had a point about you being ridiculously handsome."

"You all look alike!" Angie pointed out, very fairly. "Also yeah, Kay, my bad. He is hot as fuck."

"Runs in the family I guess," Jessie said with a laugh, settling herself against Jimmy who wrapped his arms around her waist.

"That's why we're here," he pointed out. "To see if it really does run in the family."

That was true, and maybe it would make things less weird. "Girls, is it okay if you wait here while we go do the thing?"

"Yes, of course," Jessie said. Then she glanced towards Kay and Angie. "Unless you have something else to do?"

"I'm technically a runaway, so no," Kay said with a shrug.

"I have school," Angie whispered. "But I want to stay here and see what happens."

"I think you can safely miss one day of school," Kay said. "I'll write you a note."

"Or, better yet, I'll get my tour doctor to write you a note," Jessie offered.

It was settled, so the three of them headed out into the street. It was so weird and awkward because even if he'd sort of gotten used to Jimmy, he hadn't actually been alone with him.

"Where are we going?" Tom asked, sinking his hands deep in the pockets of his torn up jeans.

"I spoke to a lab to do it on the spot." Because he sure as hell couldn't wait around for weeks for a result.

"You can do that?" Jimmy asked.

"If you throw enough money at them."

Tom nodded. "And you have plenty of that, I take it."

Kyle stopped and turned to them. "Look, I'm going to be honest with you guys. This is fucked to the nth degree. I have no idea just what the hell is wrong with this family, but I was thrown out, too. At least to a relative which proved a much better parent then our mother and father. I have no idea what to say to you guys."

"Kyle, this is not your fault," Jimmy said, his voice reasonable. "You're what? Two years older than me? What were you supposed to do at two?"

"Actually, I was sent away right after you were born."

Jimmy gave a nod. "Even more so. Let's see if we're really brothers, then we can figure out what to do."

Tom gave a grunt of approval, but Kyle could sense he was a lot more pissed than Jimmy. And he couldn't blame him, really. This was so messed up.

"And another thing I should probably be telling you is that our family is broke," he said as fheu started walking again. "That's why they're technically marrying me off to Jessie."

"Really?" Jimmy sounded rightfully amused. "Jessie said her family is broke as well."

"I know. Karma is a bitch. But the thing is, we're on our own."

"Nothing changes then," Tom said.

"Not true," Jimmy said. "There's more of us. More resources."

That was true. Plus, they still had the tour, but Kyle decided to raise that issue once it was confirmed that they were indeed family.

It only took a few hours for that to happen.

Since the paparazzi were still a problem, they waited for the results of the test at the lab catching up with each other's lives. It took Tom maybe an hour, but seeing that Jimmy trusted Kyle made him open up. His personality morphed from guarded and sulky to exuberant and overdramatic, his stories embellished with funny details and exaggerations.

"So yes," he finished off, " we're living our best lives full of freedom, random skills and genius results. Now if we could eat properly, I wouldn't even be mad."

"You have a point you know," Kyle said. "You guys are cool. Your twins are stiff and guarded. Even Sam who's a sweetheart."

"Ha," Tom said with a grin. "My twin is a sweetheart."

Jimmy stuck his tongue out at him. "My twin can cook."

It was all fun and dandy, but the DNA test result they got served the following moment proved it wasn't a joke. The three of them stared at the piece of paper realizing how much it meant.

"Well," Kyle finally said after a long pause. "This settles it. You are now officially Grants."

"Alright, fair," Tom said. "But what are we supposed to do with that."

Kyle wished he had an answer.

🌗

Kyle really needed to be with Kay, talk to her, share this crazy aspect of his life and maybe get some good advice. As it was, he had nothing.

Tom had a point. Just what the hell were they supposed to do now? Go back to Chicago and introduce him and Jimmy to the rest of the family? Then what? Leave again? Maxi and Freider sucked beyond any doubt and it was so unfair that Jerry and Sam were still stuck there. Yes, even Jerry.

Because with the discovery of this grand secret, it was obvious that poor Jerry was not at fault for who he was. It was the environment. Or else he could've turned out like Jimmy. Calm, collected, a survivor. Not a prissy little glorified maid. Which he now came to realize was really their mother's problem.

His mind whirled as they made their way back to the hotel. Fortunately the girls were still there, apparently now good friends.

"What happened?" Kay asked, rushing to him.

Kyle caught her in a hug, her lily scent calming him down. Whatever happened next, at least he had her. "It was confirmed. We really are brothers."

"This is so freaky," Angie said. She walked to Tom and caught him in a hug while Jessie went to Jimmy.

"What are we supposed to do now?" Jessie asked the all important question.

"I have no idea," Kyle said, even if he felt like he should, like he owed it to everyone to make it right.

"We need more time to think on it," Jimmy mumbled.

"That sounds reasonable," Jessie said with a nod. "Also, I have some good news." She took her phone out and passed it to Kyle.

It was opened to a news article. It was topped with what was obviously a photo of her and Jimmy making out in the park, but he was with his back towards the camera. The title read The grand make up? Jessica Stefani and Kyle Grant caught in a tender moment.

"So they confused Jimmy for me," he concluded.

"Really?" Jimmy asked, amused.

"Guess it helps that you're also really tall."

"The thing is, we're off the hook and Macy is really pleased. So much so that she didn't even comment about the rooms, which are ready by the way. We also need to get back to singing. I've spoken to Kay and Angie and there's definitely a way to include you all in the show. We do need backup dancers and the tech guy so, if you all agree... We could all continue this tour together."

That sounded amazing. "I'd definitely love that. And maybe a solution to our predicament will come to us on the road."

Tom looked down at Angie a little surprised. "What about school, babe?"

Her cheeks caught fire. "Jessie and Kay pointed out that I can finish it at any time. This will actually bring in some decent money and I can help my family. Then I can figure out what to do."

"So it's settled, then," Jimmy said. "We're all going on tour."

Where exactly am I going with the story at this point? Your guess is as good as mine. But we've shifted into family drama territory. More than one family.

So stick around while I make this interesting. 😁
