18. The One Bed Trope
The moment Kyle and Kay left, Jessie was afraid Jimmy would find some reason to bolt, too. After all, he was in his hometown now, there was absolutely no reason for him to stick around in a hotel room.
But he didn't leave. He remained leaning back against the desk, arms crossed over his chest, surveying her. Heat pooled into her cheeks and she looked away, even if all she wanted was to keep looking at him, take in every feature, every micro expression.
Now that the prospect was on the table, she had to admit that she found it very plausible for him and Kyle to be brothers. After all, they had the same type of unbelievable good looks that could only be the result of shared genes. But unlike with Kyle who'd always been more like a brother to her, Jimmy seemed to set her on fire just by looking at her.
"I'm sorry," he suddenly said. "I really didn't--" He looked away from her, biting down on his lower lip. "It was so stupid and childish."
"I can't blame you. I mean I didn't tell you anything." But his apology warmed her up.
"You didn't owe me anything. Especially not in these circumstances."
"I still hurt you." And as the words were out, she realized their full meaning. If he admitted to it, it she'd really hurt him beyond his pride... Could that mean that he cared about her?
"I'm not sure why," he mumbled.
"I thought that if--"
"No." His dark gaze was once again on her. "As I said, you don't owe me anything. And I'm really sorry, because now I realize that your home life had to be really shitty for you to resort to running away with a fake fiancé."
"Jimmy..."
"Which means you had every reason in the world to scream into the night and I was such an asshole to you."
"But you were right. At least I have a family. I have this, and I have money--"
"I have Tom. And he's worth more than all the money in the world."
She didn't have what to say to that, so she kept silent. "Let's just say I'm happy that the truth is finally out."
"To be honest, I don't think either of us could have pulled it off," he said with a smirk.
"What do you mean?"
"Didn't you see the way they look at each other. Kay could've never fooled anyone that she wasn't completely in love with him and the other way around. It's so obvious."
Jessie couldn't help but smile. "That's true." They gave her goosebumps, how natural they looked together, how they seemed to share the same heart. Lose themselves in each other, the rest of the world be damned.
She wanted that for herself. To be so in love that she couldn't even pretend not to be. To have someone look at her the way Kyle looked at Kay. Someone to make her stomach flutter and her heart sing every time he was near.
"And there goes my project for the summer," Jimmy said, pushing off the desk.
Her heart skipped a beat as he took a step closer. "What do you mean?"
"I wanted to help Kay find Kyle."
"Funny. I wanted to help him find her."
"You sort of did."
And it made her feel strangely empty because now what? What if Kyle and Kay decided to ride into the sunset together and leave her to it? She'd gotten so used to having Kyle around, it was hard to imagine touring without him.
"Ironically enough, I guess so," she finally said.
"You're a good person, Jessie."
His words had her stomach fluttering. The way he looked at her heated up her entire body and she longed so much to hold him again, kiss him. But she couldn't because she wasn't sure that everything hadn't changed now.
Jimmy seemed to be at a loss too and his eyes took on the room, the bed she sat on. "It's weird to think that this was all an elaborate plan. That you and Kyle never even..." His voice trailed off.
"We kinda did sleep in the same bed, but these things are huge and it was just sleeping. I don't know what it is about him, but ever since we met, he'd felt like a brother to me more than anything."
Jimmy nodded, though he looked thoughtful. "Huh, that complicates things a little."
She frowned. She thought it would make everything easier. "How so?"
In a second, he moved towards her, leaned over and caught her between his arms. "Because if I end up being his brother, there's no way in hell I could think of you as a sister."
Her breath caught in her throat as her pulse started drumming in her ears. "Oh, no. That only applies to him. You're..." She couldn't even tell what he was, but she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him down.
The moment his mouth was on hers, it felt like an explosion. Much like it felt the first time when he'd kissed her out of the blue and sent her mind spinning. He could always do that, sweep her off her feat and into a world where happiness was not only possible but guaranteed. He tightened his hold on her, kissing her with such an intensity that she was glad she was already lying down. Why did it feel that amazing?
When he pulled back, he was grinning. "Yeah, I'd rather be that."
"You are," she breathed. "And now I'm terrified because I don't know what I'm doing, what this is, how I could let you be my first kiss and now you're..." Everything, but she couldn't say that. She'd known him for a little over a week and there was so much she had no idea about.
And yet, her plans have somehow come to revolve around him. This wasn't right and she knew it. Then why did the idea of moving on without him make her sick?
"Wait." He got to his knees, still hovering over her. "I was your first kiss?"
Damn, she hadn't realized she'd let that one slip. It was so embarrassing, but now that it was out, she saw no point pretending, so she gave a tiny nod.
"Damn it, I'm so sorry."
"What are you sorry about?"
"I practically stole your first kiss."
That was true, but she'd liked it so much, she fell into it like an idiot. And not just the kiss, but the build up, the way in which she'd tried to push his buttons for just a little bit of satisfaction and he'd answered by giving her a wonderful first experience.
"That might have been a problem if I didn't enjoy it and kissed you right after."
He narrowed his eyes at her and he looked so hot. "I can't believe you never kissed someone before."
"Why? Because I'm seventeen? Because I'm a popular pop princess?"
"No. Because you're so damn beautiful, it just seems unreal."
Heat crept up her cheeks and she couldn't hold in a grin. Yeah, she could get use to hearing things like that.
"Well, believe it or not, it's true. My parents didn't really let me hang out with people I liked, so I wasn't inclined to let anyone kiss me."
The smile slipped off his face, replaced by a muted fury which worried her but also made her realize he might care a bit more than she thought. And it only made everything better.
"Don't be upset. I'm handling it. It's what this whole thing with Kyle is about."
For a moment, he still looked like he'd go after her parents and chop them up, but then he sighed and the easy smile returned to his face. "I trust you."
For some reason, those were the perfect words. "I trust you, too." Please don't make me regret it. But for some insane reason, she didn't think he would. "So I'm happy I ran into you and you ended up being my first kiss."
"You're exceptionally good for a newbie."
"Hey, maybe we just fit together."
The words were out before she could filter them, but it was okay because it just earned her another kiss. She pulled him down over her on the bed and she came to realize that they weren't just empty words. The way he held her, the way she fit against him, everything was just so natural, as if they were meant to be. So a big part of her was convinced they would perfectly fit together on other ways as well.
"Jessie," he breathed into her ear.
The warmth of it had her entire body trembling and she let out a moan.
"I'm not going to hurry into this," he whispered.
She agreed with him. In normal circumstances. "We might not have a lot of time. After all, I'm gone before the week is over."
He raised on his forearms. "Really? Just like that? I mean I don't really mind being a fling, but do you want that?"
"You don't mind being a fling?" She had no idea how to even take those words and it was very hard to think with him so close.
"Not if it means I got these few weeks with you. But I just..." He seemed to have lost his train of thought too as he gazed into her eyes.
Everything inside Jessie heated up and she was sure she was about to explode with the foreign feeling drowning her, filling her chest until there was no room and it would explode out of her. What was this?
"Don't look at me like that," he said.
"Like what?"
"Like you're suddenly everything and there's nothing I can do about it. I have no idea what it is about you, but I've never been more infatuated in my life."
She didn't think she could take it anymore. So she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him down, kissing him with everything she had, trying to unload the smothering feeling into it. His grip on her tightened and she felt she'd die if he didn't come closer, so much closer. Her hands started roaming, sinking under his t-shirt. His skin was so warm and smooth, she wanted to touch more of it. His kissed moved from her mouth to her jawline, then down her neck. It felt amazing, better than anything ever had.
"We need to get a room," he whispered.
Hell yeah, but it wasnt needed. "We have this one."
"Kyle and Kay will be back and there's only one bed."
His words finally drew away the fog on her brain, and that's when she realized he'd actually pulled away a little. His expression was a mixture of amusement and something that she'd never seen directed at her before but it looked a lot like how Kyle had been staring at Kay.
"Only one bed," she muttered. That trope worked when there were only two people, not four. He had a point. "Yeah, I should talk to Macy about getting another room."
"Could we try two in case Tom and Angie decide to join the party?"
She nodded automatically, trying to drive the fuzziness away. Why was she disappointed? What was she even expecting? It was obvious that Kyle and Kay would he back soon and finding her and Jimmy making out on the bed was probably a bad idea.
"What are you thinking?"
The way he smirked showed that he probably knew only too well, so she nudged him. She could play this teasing game. "If I get another room, would it be for you and me?"
He let out a laugh. "Be careful what you wish for, sunshine. You know I'm game."
She didn't, but it felt amazing to know he was. And sunshine... It made her entire body tingle. "I am a bit lost."
His expression turned from playful to serious. "What do you mean?"
"I have no idea what this thing between us is. And I like it. It's something I've never felt before, something..." She couldn't put it into words.
He leaned over and gave her a short kiss. "I like it, too. And, surprisingly enough, it's something I haven't felt before either, even if I was sure what it was all about."
She tilted her head, frowning in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"Sometimes life doesn't make sense," he said with a shrug and got to his feet. "Love never does. Let's go find Macy. One bed is definitely not enough. Because I think our lovebirds have definitely earned this one."
Jessie looked after him as he headed for the loving room area of the suite, her heart thumping painfully. Did he just say the word love? And why did it make her entire being sing. This couldn't be it. Not so fast, not so sudden. But something inside her gave a huge nod, as if to confirm that she was head over heels even if it made no sense.
But since there was no point obsessing about it and she wanted to keep the happy vibe, she followed him, caught him right in front of the door and kissed him. He could feel him smile as he kissed her back.
And then the door opened and hit them.
"No way!" Macy shrieked. "No fucking way!" She slammed the door shut.
Jimmy and Jessie broke apart, stepping away from each other, and she felt like laughing and cursing at the same time.
"You did not just hook up with the tech guy!"
"Good thing you didn't come in like fifteen minutes ago," Jimmy mumbled.
"No! Kyle having a secret girlfriend is one thing but this--"
"Doesn't change anything, Macy," Jessie said. "The plan is still on. This won't get out."
Macy didn't seem to believe her as he glared at Jimmy instead.
He raised his hands in surrender, but he looked amused. "I agree. I know the secret and it's safe with me. I wouldn't do anything to hurt Jessie."
Macy faltered, as if she could sense he was honest but didn't want to abandon the fight so easily. "I don't have the time or energy for jealousy and teenage drama or whatever this love triangle will bring--"
"Make it a love square," Kyle said, he and Kay joining the party at the perfect time.
Macy turned to them, her eyes wide. "Oh no! How did you two get here?"
"By keeping an appropriate distance from each other," Kyle said joyfully, dropping a suitcase next to the door. "We're going to need another room, though."
"Make that two other rooms, please," Jessie interjected. "More people will be joining us."
"More people?"
"Yeah," Kyle said. "As it turns out, my life's a damn soap opera and Jimmy might be my brother so we'll need more space."
"I--" Macy looked from one face to the next. "I give up. I'll see what I can do." And she went around Kyle and Kay and shut the door behind her.
"That went well," Jimmy said.
"Why was she yelling?" Kyle asked with the grin which made it clear that he knew exactly why Macy was yelling.
"Let's say our little secret is out, too," Jessie said with a shrug and was more than happy when Jimmy wrapped his arm around her and kissed her temple.
"Oh, this is amazing," Kay said, clasping her hands together. Her eyes moved to Jimmy. "I'm so happy for you."
Jimmy grinned. "I guess it worked out in the end. At least from point A to point B. Where we go from here..." He looked down at her as he said this and she tensed. They still had that to figure out.
"I know what I want, but I'm not butting in," Kyle said. "As long as you're happy. Do you think Macy can get the rooms right away?"
Like a given, Jessie's phone beeped and she took it out from her back pocket to check her text. "Predictably enough, no. Earliest is tomorrow at noon, but we'll have them then."
"Um, there's only one bed," Kay pointed out.
"Yeah, yeah," Jessie mumbled. "And the one bed trope work with two people, not four." She knew they could fit in the room because there was a couch, but she also knew that was not the point.
Kyle and Kay needed privacy and she didn't want to be an even temporary cockblock. She was Kyle's wingman so she was going to make this happen.
Kay giggled at her words and Kyle gave her a smile. Yeah, they'd come to understand each other so well, and now Jessie was going to make both of them love her so much. So she squeezed Jimmy's hand and looked up at him.
"You know, I've never seen the city at night. What are the best places?"
Jimmy's smile show he caught on to her plan and he wasn't about to blow it. "Oh, I do know some great places. But mind you, it will take hours. Are you sure you're up for a sleepless night?"
"I'm too pumped full of energy to sleep. I'd love to walk it off. And when we get back, I can always crash out here on the couch for a few hours."
"We'll have it ready for you," Kay said, the smile on her face brightening up the room.
"Alright then," Jimmy said. "It's a date." And he pulled her out the door. A minute later, they were in the elevator. "You're amazing," he whispered, leaning down to kiss her.
"I hope you know some really secluded places, because I'll want more of this."
"You're on."
She surely hoped so. Because walking hand in hand with him down the street had become the top of her list of priorities. They had a lovely night ahead of them.
