Chapter 13
"Breathe in and out." Uncle says calmly, "Imagine shifting into the wolf. Don't let fear control your mind or she'll take advantage of it."
We had left Rimerest hours ago. We came to a stop to refill the empty flasks that someone, meaning Uncle, had drank. While Aaron fills them up nearby, Uncle decides to get a few lessons in.
"You have to keep her in line." He continues, "When you are shifting, remind yourself that YOU are in control. YOU make the rules. Now prepare to shift. Get rid of the cloak."
I snap my eyes open in surprise, "Wait you want me to shift? Like right now? Without my cloak?"
He nods, "Yes, thats basically all you need to know. Unless you want me to give you the lecture. Forewarning it's atleast an hour or so long. Depends on how well I remember it. So possibly three hours or so."
I wave him off, "No, no thats find. Spare me the lectures."
I untie the cloak with shaky fingers, hesitantly I hand the cloak to Uncle.
I can do this. I can do this. Its not that big of a deal... unless I mess up and harm everyone here.
Before I shift I turn to Uncle, "You promise you won't let me hurt anyone? You'll put the cloak on as soon as you see trouble, promise?"
He nods, "Don't worry you're my niece, you can handle it. Stop doubting yourself or we'll all be dead."
"Gee thanks," I said coldly. Closing my eyes I concentrate on my breathing and shift. As I did I remind myself that I am in control.
Suddenly memories of that night flashes through my mind. Blood. Fear. Screams of horror and anger rang through my mind. I can't block the loud noises; they're in my head.
Voices cloud my mind with doubt and fear. Reminding me that I have no control over the wolf. Not the mind or body. I was never in control and I never will be.
Kill.
Then it was like I was being shove into the back of my mind by another. To be forgotten and out of the way. To never be heard from again.
