Chapter 30 - Modern Times Rock'n 'Roll / November-December 1972
POV Roger
I've finished packing my bags. Today is December twenty-second. I leave the apartment where I live with Les, Peter and Mike. Peter, who lives in Liverpool, has already left for the city to spend the holidays with his family and Mike went to Manchester to visit his relatives. We're on college vacation, finally. Les, who has relatives in Truro, is going with me to the city to spend the holidays. Les and I got into my blue Mini Cooper and headed for the apartment where my mother and sister live. It's six in the morning. We are leaving very early, because it will be almost eight hours of travel on the highway. I parked the car in front of the building and my mother and sister were already waiting for me. Les and I got out of the car and helped them with their bags and put them in the trunk of the car. Then they hugged me affectionately.
"We're ready, my son. Let's go to Truro. Said my mother, smiling.
We got in the car. My mother and my sister Clare went to the back of the car and Les sat down next to me. I called the car and started driving and half an hour later I was out of London and got on the freeway. During the long journey we were talking excitedly. Let's stop on the freeway for lunch around noon. I had been fired the night before from my band friends. Freddie and Bri stayed in London because their relatives are there and Deacy and Veronica left for Leicester because their relatives live there. I will find my friends now, only after the tenth of January.
You want to know what happened between Ivy and me, did not you? Are you curious?
Flashback Roger
The day we were at the police station, the deputy said that he would have to arrest Ivy for assault on me and told the police officer that she damaged my car. Freddie and the other boys begged me not to do this and that I should take the complaint against Ivy.
"If I did all this, it's because Roger first assaulted his friend Brian. Ivy said defensively.
"I really assaulted my friend, in a moment of rage, delegate, but Bri and I already understand each other," I said.
"Is this all true, Brian Harold May?" The deputy asked.
"Yes. Roger attacked me at the party with punches and I retaliated, but we have already made up, we have forgiven ourselves. But I think Ivy did all this to defend me. She assaulted Roger the moment he was punching me and then angry he damaged my friend's car. Said Bri.
"I realize that they are all groups of friends in common. I think you should understand each other better, instead of getting arrested, right? Said the deputy.
Freddie, Deacy, and Bri approached me and begged almost pleading for me to take the case against Ivy, otherwise she would be arrested.
I looked at Ivy, who was standing next to my sister Clare, Veronica and Mary. For a moment I felt compassion for her. Was it really worth it to see her trapped by everything she did for me?
"I can take the case against Ivy, sir, but she'll have to pay for all the damage she's done to my car." She will have to pay the whole damaged part. He said to the deputy. "That way I'll take all the case against Ivy and she will not be arrested."
"You agree to do that, Ivy. Said my sister Clare to her. "Pay the damage and you'll be free to be arrested."
Ivy looked at me with hatred and told the delegate:
"I'll pay for all the damage I've done to Roger's car, Mr. Delegate." And I'll pay tomorrow.
"Excellent, Miss Ivy. Said the deputy. "I hope he pays, otherwise we'll know."
- I'm a woman of my word. Ivy looked at me with hatred.
After everything was settled, no one was arrested and shortly afterwards we were all released.
As we were leaving the police station Ivy smiled wryly and said,
"I'll pay the loss to you, darling, and I hope that one day Queen will succeed in the song, which I know she will do, whether on merit of Freddie, Bri and John." You are an incredible drummer, I can not deny it, you play guitar and guitar very well too, you sing well, but you do not write songs like Freddie. You do not have the capacity. You're a cripple, Roger. In fact, in the band, you're just a cute little face.
The boys overheard this and rebuked Ivy for such a statement. I took a deep breath, wondering what to say, when Freddie approached and said,
"Dear Rog, do not care what Ivy says. She's angry and upset with you. Everyone knows his ability as a musician and composer. Please do not retort, be quiet. Enough of confusion for today.
I was very angry with Ivy's statement. I'll prove to her that I'm not just a pretty face.
The next day I called Ivy and told her how much trouble I would have to get my car cleaned. I had gone to a workshop and they passed the budget and told her. Hours later Ivy made a bank transfer in my name, with the amount I had spoken and arranged my car.
After that, Ivy and I stepped back. Brian asked why on the day of the party I got so pissed off and punched him and said again,
- I was angry at seeing you talking to her cheerfully, after all you're a friend / brother, Brian and Ivy betrayed me, she lied to me. - I said.
"Rog, my brother, it's time you got over it. As much as you do not want to be friends with Ivy, other people even want me. Ivy is incredible and I believe that one day you will forgive her. My friend takes this hurt from your heart and give her another chance. You do not fool anyone. You are suffering in silence. Said Bri.
November arrived and with the month much rush with the compositions of the band, besides tests and works of the faculty and the stage like professor. I started writing a song, for the band's first album, but I have not told the guys yet. The lyrics of the song exposes all my anger, revolt, everything I'm feeling at the moment.
Soon November ended and arrived December. Final college exams and the end of the internship. I had already shown Bri, Deacy and Freddie the song lyrics and the songwriting I did alone. On the fourteenth of December we walked into Trident Studios again and we would have only a week of recording before the holiday break. The first four nights they recorded the instrumental of the song and the three nights in a row I recorded the main vocal of the song. I sang the whole song and Freddie just sang a few sentences. For the next three nights Freddie was with me in the studio. I sang in anger:
Had to make do with a worn out rock and roll scene
The old bop is gettin' tired need a rest
Well you know what I mean
Fifty eight that was great
But it's over now and that's all
Somethin' harder's coming up
Gonna really knock a hole in the wall
Gonna hit ya grab you hard
Make you feel ten feet tall
I poured all my anger into the music, against the people who hate Rock and Roll, and I also talked about the changes that the musical genre was undergoing.
Well, I hope that big new baby's gonna come along soon
You don't know it could happen any ol' rainy afternoon
With the temp'rature down
And the juke box blowin' no fuse
And my musical life's feelin'
Like a long Sunday school cruise
And you know there's one thing
Every single body could use
Yeah, listen to me, baby
Let me tell you what it's all about
Then Freddie and I would sing this part:
Modern times rock and roll
Modern times rock and roll
I was disgusted, because I want to be a Rock Star and through Queen, when we get to know each other, we will show the new face of Rock and Roll. I want to show the conservatives that Rock is the musical solution. I want to show Ivy that I'm not just the drummer and that he also plays guitar and guitar and has a beautiful voice to sing. I want to show the ungrateful that I also write lyrics. If she thinks I'm just a pretty face in the band, she's mistaken.
Get your high heeled guitar boots and some groovy clothes
Get a hair piece on your chest
And a ring through your nose
Find a nice little man who says
He's gonna make you a real big star
"Stars in your eyes ants in your pants
Think you should go far
Everybody in this bum sucking world's
Gonna know just who you are!"
Look out
Again Freddie and I sang:
Modern times Rock'n 'roll
"You were incredible, dear Rog. Said Freddie, smiling.
- Thank you my friend. I also want to show a person that I'm not just a pretty face in the band. She said with revulsion.
Freddie smiled and ran his hand across my back.
"You're like this because of Ivy, are not you?" - He smiled.
- Of course, Freddie. Ivy humiliated me in front of everyone when she said I'm just a pretty face on the Queen. She hinted that I do not have capacity in the band. For I will prove to her and many people that I am a real musician. – said angrily, lighting a cigarette.
End of Roger Flashback.
I'm going to Truro with my sister Clare, my mother Winifred and my friend Les. I'm watching the highway. I've been driving for over four hours. 1973 has to be different. I have had many disappointments this year, disappointment and love of friends. I sigh. I hope Truro's holidays are good for me ...
To be continued...
P.S: Poor Roger, he's just a pretty face on the Queen. And what a beautiful face, hey hehehe.
