Chapter 6; You're Crazy.
Miracle beat her wings to catch the updrafts, soaring higher on the currents of the
wind. Air rushed past her face and caught in her wings, and the sun blazed, white-hot,
an unreachable disk in the robin's-egg sky.
The whole sky was hers.
Pine trees jutted from the rocky earth for miles; and from up here, they looked like
mere blades of grass, small and insignificant. The boulders looming under their
branches seemed to be scattered pebbles, and the town below her looked like a pup's
toy blocks.
Oh. Right. She was looking for a town. Could that be it?
Miracle reluctantly swooped lower, scanning the village with rose-quartz eyes. A
group of shimmering bronzey boulders off to the side caught her eye; but not just
because of their unusual color. There was a wolf sleeping there, a stormy-night wolf
with a ridge of pale grey fur running between his ears.
Could that be him? Darkfang, the wolf from the scroll?
Miracle skimmed above the rooftops of the town like a swallow, alighting on a dun
colored stone near him. She unrolled the scroll on the rock before her; scrutinizing
the wolf's portrait. Yep, they looked pretty similar. It had to be him.
Without another thought, Miracle sharply tapped Darkfang on the muzzle with one
claw and leapt back, her eyes trained on his face.
The black wolf opened his eyes with a start and blinked blearily at her.
"What do you want?" he muttered sullenly, not even sparing a glance at her partially
open wings. "Just go away."
Miracle thought it would be best if she got straight to the point. "Are you Darkfang?"
One of his ears twitched. "Yes, now will you leave me alone?"
"No," Miracle responded firmly. "Because if you're Darkfang, then you're part of The
Prophecy."
For the first time, Darkfang really looked up. He barked a laugh, loud and incredulous.
"Me? A prophecy? No, you've got the wrong wolf. Or you're nuts. I wouldn't be
surprised."
Miracle lashed her tail, frustrated. "Do you see these wings? I'm the prophesied wolf."
His eyes finally flickered to her wings, and she could see the surprise written there.
"You're crazy," he said stubbornly.
"No, look!" she pushed the still open scroll towards him. "See for yourself!"
He was silent for a long moment, reading the words beneath his picture. "If what you
say is true," he said slowly, "what am I supposed to do?"
"Come with me," Miracle said, already bounding onto the forest floor. "We need to
find-"
"Wait!" he barked, standing up as well. "Can I at least get your name before we go
haring off on some grand adventure?"
"Oh, yeah," Miracle said sheepishly. "'m Miracle."
His jaw dropped, and he stared at her, stricken with an implacable emotion.
"That means." he said, his voice barely a whisper.
That means you're my sister."
