CHAPTER 16

I sat still as anticipation flowed through me. My posture was correct while I nervously twiddled my fingers atop my lap. I hate surprises. I like to be in the known of what's going on around me. Too bad I certainly wasn't getting any answers from Ryan.

I looked over at his beautiful, cold, stone-like face in the dim car. His features slightly catching the neon glimpses of light that shone through the windows as we were passing by large buildings. Ryan was incredibly hard to read. I thought we had finally moved past our banter and rivalry last week, at least a little, but honestly, we haven't had much progress. Ryan was clearly back to his emotionless ways. Leaving me hanging in cold air.

"We're here."

I released the bottom lip that I wasn't aware I was biting. A habit I develop when I tend to overthink. I looked out the tinted glass and saw a large building that was brightly lit with many people lined up at a few of the open kiosks.

Yeah. Did I mention how much I hate surprises?

"A movie theater?" I asked, completely displeased.

Ryan's brows furrowed a bit as he chuckled slightly. "You don't like movies?"

I shook my head. "Movies are fine. It's just the whole idea of being in a theater that I don't like."

An eyebrow arched up slightly as Ryan looked at me almost disbelievingly. "You mean to tell me you've never been to a movie theater?"

"Why bother when you have a movie theater in your mansion already?" I asked, flipping my luxurious hair over my shoulder.

"Well allow me to show you how regular people usually see cinema."

"Ew, regular people?" I asked disgustedly. "That's literally two steps down from basic people."

Ryan rolled his eyes as he turned off the car and unbuckled his belt to get out. Ugh, I hate when he ignores my comments! Wasting no time, I got out and quickly caught up, seeing as he was already halfway across the parking lot.

I tapped my foot impatiently as I was standing in the long food court line. Ryan was at the booth, paying for our tickets. Wanting the film to be a surprise, he asked me to hold our spot in the snack line. The aroma of buttered popcorn and salted pretzels filled my nostrils as I looked around the red and purple themed theater.

'How much do these fatties need!?' I thought as I deadpanned at the motionless line. Is this really what "normal" people do for fun? Standing continuously in lines for cheesy movies and overpriced, stale candy?

"Got the tickets." A voice cooed beside me.

"Good to know," I said casually.

"Hmm, I take it you're not having a good time yet?"

"Gee, what makes you say that?" I rolled my eyes.

I heard a chuckle escape from his broad chest. "Well for starters, you're tapping your heels, your arms are folded over your chest, and your lips are puckered. I noticed you tend to pucker them when you're annoyed."

A smirk started to form across my lips as I turned my head to face him. "What are you, a cop?"

"Just observant," he smirked down at me. His dark orbs glistened from the bright lights in the area.

The idea of Ryan paying close detail to my mannerisms made me internally blush. I could feel a soothing warmness swell in my chest. A small, slow forming smile spread across my lips as I stared up at him. Our small moment, however, got cut short by girlish giggles coming from in front of us. A group of girls, three blondes and one brunette, were whispering amongst each other. Their eyes darting to and from Ryan.

I don't know why the slight blushes on their cheeks and flirtatious glances aimed towards Ryan was pissing me off so much. Ryan was hot. I get it. Honestly the hottest guy I've ever seen, and it is obvious that other girls thought so too. But I didn't like that. I didn't want other girls to be attracted to him too.

My brows furrowed and lips turned into a frown at my inner thoughts. Ugh, am I jealous? I've never been jealous before. I thought I had this sort of immunity where I could not get jealous, only others could be jealous of me.

"Um," A voice giggled out. "You can skip in front of us if you want."

I looked up at the direction the vocal fried voice was coming from. Of course it came from one of those below average girls. Her blue eyes were glimmering up at Ryan as she was gnawing on a piece of gum. Her finger twirling a few strands of her bleached blonde hair.

"Thanks," was all Ryan muttered before he maneuvered his way in front of the group. I took my place next to him, throwing a hardened look at the girls as I passed by them, slowly.

"Do you think she's his girlfriend?" A not so subtle voice whispered behind me.

"No way. They're not even holding hands or anything."

"So then what? Is she, like, just his friend?"

"Hmmm, maybe. Or maybe he lost a bet and had to take her out as part of the loss or something. I mean she's cute, but he's so out of her league!"

I rolled my eyes at their idiotic conversation. I could have turned around and gave those desperate bumpkins a piece of my mind, but instead, I conjectured up a perfectly fitting idea. I moved closer to Ryan and wrapped my arms around his muscular, right one. The warmth and softness of his black jacket rubbed against the side of me. I smirked slightly when I heard a short gasp emit from the losers behind us.

"What are you doing?"

I looked up at the slight confused look on Ryan's face. "I got cold." was all I omitted.

He leaned down closer to me and whispered in my ear, so only I could hear. "Or maybe you just got jealous."

My mouth parted slightly in shock as I watched that all too familiar smirk form across his face. He was listening to those girls' conversations along with me!

I was about to deny everything when it was finally our turn to order food. "How can I help you?" A woman smiled at us.

"Pick whatever you want," Ryan told me.

I turned my head away, although, still holding onto him. "Hm, since you think you know everything, just order for me."

"One large popcorn with butter, two medium sized strawberry slushies, and a box of starbursts."

I quickly turned to face him again, shocked. How did he know exactly what I was going to order?! Guessing what I was thinking, he simply smirked down at me before handing the cashier the amount owed.

I took my ticket from Ryan's hand. "Hope you didn't expect to share," I smirked up at him as the woman  handed over the large bucket of freshly popped kernels. Grabbing the popcorn, I made my way down the hall, leaving Ryan to carry everything else.

I stood on the steps of the darkened theater. I had made it just in time. It looked like the movie was very close to starting. I looked at the full rows of people already seated, trying to figure out where we were going to sit. I didn't know where, but I knew that there was no way I was going to sit in between these filthy peasants!

"Come on," a deep voice, closely behind me, spoke up. I turned to see Ryan walk past me and up the steps.

We settled on sitting in the back row. It was a good thing too because that means there was more than enough space between me and the rest of these pilgrims. Their sounds of slurps and crunches were horrifying. How do people sit through this torture?

Letting out a frustrated sigh, I reached into the popcorn bucket, but instead of feeling crunchy kernels, I came in contact with cool fingers. I looked down and saw my hand laying on top of Ryan's that were reaching for the popcorn at the same time.

"Sorry," Ryan muttered before pulling his hand away.

Feeling slightly sheepish, I looked away and took a few bites of the slightly salted and buttery popcorn.

"I hope you like fantasy movies," Ryan broke the silence as the last commercial was going off screen.

"They're good, I guess."

"Well you know what they say about people who like fantasy movies," Ryan replied closer to me.

"No. What?" I turned to him, genuinely curious.

"I don't know. I was hoping you did."

I giggled at his response before opening my pack of starbursts, searching for the most delicious, red ones. The movie began to start and I was actually enjoying myself. Halfway through the film, I subconsciously rested my right arm on the rest beside me. I didn't realize it was Ryan's until I came in contact with his arms already resting there. I was about to move my hand away in embarrassment, again, when his fingers delicately laced around mine.

This time was different than before. I could literally feel a slight electric shock when his hand grasped mine. Our fingers entwined in a perfect lock, almost as if they were perfectly crafted to fit each other. I looked up at him but his face was locked on the screen, except this time his face wasn't cold like. It was soft, almost serene. A closed smile graced my face as I looked back at the movie.

And when the movie finished, our hands never parted, not even on the ride back home.
