Chapter 54

-Noah's POV-

Crow let out a string of colourful curses which would make the residents of Balamory feel colourblind. I knew that he didn't want to know about his father, he was happy living his normal human life with his two mothers, but if they were wrong. If that little comment at the meeting hadn't been brushed aside so easily, if what just happened, happened, and his father wasn't a vampire. Then my Cro would be dead.

He was in pain; serious pain and I couldn't help but sympathise. Even if he wasn't Crow, I would've felt sorry for any person who went through that, maybe not Geppetto or Murdoch, but anyone with a full heart. He was going through what I went through, we were becoming the same.

"Don't we think that it's too much of a coincidence?" Aldrich asked, wiping blood off his hands onto a separation curtain. "I mean, what are the chances we have three half-human and half-vampire hybrids?" He raised an eyebrow.

I nodded my head; he had an extremely good point. "Yeah, how come we have practically all the vampire and human hybrids?" I looked towards Miss Munro, assuming that she kept track of them all, for her safety rather than my own.

"It happens all the time," she said and brushed the question off. "Vampires get bored, imagine what they could do all throughout the night, not benign able to sleep to rest, so they find other means of entertainment."

I sighed and shook my head. "No thanks." I moved closer to Crow, embracing him. I hoped that it wouldn't be too hard for him, but he had looked after me when I was in this state, it was time for me to look after him. "How did you know about Crow's father?" I knew that I had to ask her whilst I was holding Crow.

"It was a guess," Miss Munro shrugged her shoulders.

I wasn't surprised that it was a guess, I had figured that out on my own. But as the superhumans were beginning to falter and retreat, and whilst my concentration was focused on Crow, I was given the shock of my life.

Haven charged at Miss Munro, pressing her forearm against her throat and pushing her against the wall. Her glasses had fallen off, and her hair made it look like she was spouting lava. "A guess?" She repeated in her usual, quiet, voice. If I were Miss Munro, I would be terrified, terrified of this small teenage girl who was bullied relentlessly, from what I'd heard anyway. This small girl who relied on Crow to keep her safe. I suppose that she and Sawyer had a lot in common. It was always the shy ones, who spoke the loudest, even if their voice wasn't as loud.

"Yes, a guess. There was no way that you would be able to detect the vampire gene," Miss Munro seemed very brave in the situation she was in. "I used my detector. Actually, Crow was one of the first people I had tried using it on. It reacted strangely one day when I was teaching his year one class."

"Sorry, what?" Crow asked distractedly, He was beginning to sit upright in my arms, but he was leaning heavily against me. I could tell from his tense shoulders that he wasn't a fan of being close to me, and I didn't blame him. Crow wasn't the fondest of touch, I'd learned that after a few days. He tolerated it from those that he was close to, and rarely initiated it. "What do you mean? And why did I even say sorry?"

"Well, I knew there had to be more hybrids out there," Miss Munro started to explain with a small laugh. Her words were slow, which helped me take time to assess the situation we were in. I think that we were beginning to get the upper hand. I was sure that most of the humans here didn't actually want to work for her. Maybe she had tortured them? Maybe she had forced them to fight us by blackmailing them? "A school would be the best place to figure that out. It would help me discover the hybrids, so that we could experiment."

"Sneaking into a school is very not good." Aldrich shook his head, being the ultimate hypocrite. Sawyer and I exchanged exasperated glances and scoffs. Even Crow found humour in the comment. "But I suppose you mean yourself and Murdoch? I hope." Aldrich tilted his head and began walking around the room, examining the humans who were both on the floor and on the beds.

"Of course," Miss Munro replied with a nod, but I didn't believe her. I hadn't seen her when I had been kidnapped and brought here, but there was far more to the story then she was letting on. "We worked on developing human DNA, twisting them with vampiric DNA, creating our whole new species." A mad glint came to her eyes and her voice became a lot less controlled.

Haven pressed her arm more into Miss Munro's throat, a small grunt escaping her lips. It seemed I wasn't the only one to notice the change in Miss Munro's attitude. "You were going to experiment on children?" Her words were cold and full of rage.

"Can you stand?" I asked Crow in a whisper. I had the feeling that we shouldn't be this close to Miss Munro, I don't know what it was about her subtle change in attitude, but it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Crow nodded his head, but then he wrapped both his arms around me as I gently helped him to his feet. He kept one arm around my shoulders, as we slowly backed away and into the small circle of our friends, apart from Haven.

"Well, technically I did." Miss Munro couldn't nod, but I had the feeling that she would've if she could. Her arms folded across her chest. "You don't need to hurt people to experiment on them, technically seeing how the detector would react would be counted as experimenting." She gave a wide grin, almost looking like Murdoch.

"I have a question," Sawyer raised his hand. He looked like he was in class and was going to ask about the origin of transformers. "What are you? I know that question sounds really rude, but I can't tell." I was glad that he was the one asking, because I was also confused.

"Good," Miss Munro answered, her expression turning proud. "That was part of my intentions, you see? I know that I exhibit quite vampiric qualities, thanks to the experiments. And now, so do they." She gestured with a hand to the humans which were scattered around the room. "Like Miss Haven here, I've blended the traits of both human and vampire, to create a whole new race. That's what I am."

"You're a mad woman," Geppetto commented bravely. "You want to be a God; you want to have followers and create a whole new world where people are more equal." I didn't know if he was being mean or if he was admiring her. Maybe he was jealous that he hadn't thought of it in the first place.

"Yeah, and vampires would go extinct, you fool." Aldrich replied and hit Geppetto over the back of the head with a silver tray. I had to laugh, I couldn't resist. "If you make humans into superhumans, then the only vampires who would survive would be the offspring of vampires and humans, after they go through...that." He pointed to the needle, which was on the floor, where Crow had previously been.

"Is that so bad?" Miss Munro asked with a crazy smile. Her voice almost sounded like she was singing. "It means that only the worthy survive. There are far too many vampires in the world who take advantage of the poor and defenceless humans, it would minimise the bloodshed by so much."

"You're selling this to the wrong crowd," Caio commented. "As most of us are those kinds of vampires." He crossed his arms and stared at Miss Munro, daring her to continue her sales pitch.

"I suppose." Miss Munro's eyes trailed from him to Haven. "Can you let me go now, please? I don't really know where we're going from here, but it's uncomfortable for the both of us."

Haven hesitated, and that's all Miss Munro needed to throw her off, and into the table. Haven grunted as her back came in contact with the steel, but she was quick to grab one of Miss Munro's wrists, stopping her from moving towards us. Miss Munro grabbed for a scalpel and slashed at Haven, the blade going across her neck, not very deep, but deep enough for the vampires in the room to smell blood.

"Didn't think that one through," Crow growled as his eyes glowed a bright red. I was sure mine were doing the same, I could see the luminous red of my veins. "Way to scare the humans." He was right, the humans which surrounded us had all tensed. Some of them grabbed similar weapons, whilst others looked at us with wide eyes.

"Attack!" Miss Munro commanded, and it was as though it was a trigger word for the humans, who sprang into action. I knew that the humans were just to distract us, to attack us whilst she escaped. But they were almost unstoppable as they surrounded us in a circle. The only one who could go after Miss Munro, was Haven.
