Chapter 50

-Noah's POV-

"Aren't you missing something?" Geppetto asked, his voice drawn out and lengthy. I was surprised to see that he was still listening. I felt like his opinion was that he was above something so silly as a little vampire council. "What about what Bertrand did to them? Does it have any way of detecting that?" He glanced over at me. "I highly doubt that Noah was a super powerful vampire before he was kidnapped."

"Exactly, so it all worked out in the end." I tightened my grip on Murdoch, who had decided to use the opportunity to further show that he was a psychopath. I knew that I wouldn't take much more from him. I wondered why we had gotten involved with him, and how he and Crow were actually introduced. Because Murdoch knew Crow before I had. I didn't know what Crow was like at the time, but I couldn't see him associating with anyone like this man.

Miss Munro cleared her throat and looked down. "I think that we should try this first, just to make sure everything's working correctly." She gestured to the suitcase and equipment between herself and the older human. I wasn't quite sure if she was human or a vampire. At first, I thought that she was human, but she was rather quick, and talking about herself as being able to interfere with the vampire detection.

After a quick few minutes of Miss Munro explaining to the older human how the mixture worked, reassuring most of the humans as she did, Miss Munro backed away and moved to the other side of the room.

"I just have to mix these two together?" The older man asked as he held two beakers, one in each hand. After a confirming nod from Miss Munro, he put the two liquids together. What were once a clear liquid and a powdery yellow liquid, fused together and swirled. It looked like fire dancing in the jar, but then the colour increased in vibrant and turned a dark red colour. It was fizzing softly, like a bath bomb which had just been dissolved in water.

"That's rubbish," Geppetto commented quietly. I wasn't surprised to see Caio and Aldrich nodding beside them, but they must have some faith in it, or else they wouldn't still be here. "How is that meant to detect vampires?"

Miss Munro didn't answer verbally, but she gestured for the older human to stand up and come forward. I was startled when she pointed towards me and Sawyer,

As the man walked forwards, his bones creaking as he did so, the liquid in the beaker began to bubble even more. It was like we were hot, and we were trying to boil some water. As it came towards Sawyer and I, it looked like it was about to overflow, frothing together and making a white foam on top.

"So that's what it's like when it's faced with two vampire hybrids," Aldrich said, breaking the silence which had covered the entire room. The only other audible thing was the bubbling liquid. "What if it goes towards a human with the blood of a vampire hybrid?" He gestured to Haven and Crow.

The human looked hesitant, and almost apologetic towards Haven. Maybe it was because he didn't comprehend the fact that vampires were once humans as well, and only sympathised with the one who is still mostly human. He stalked towards Haven and Crow slowly. The liquid in the beaker made an even stranger reaction.

It continued to bubble, but the foam on top was beginning to turn yellow, which darkened quickly. It was almost becoming entirely red.

"That's not meant to happen," Miss Munro said and cleared her throat. "That's never happened before."

My anxiety sparked, and I was very close to standing up, if I wasn't reminded about Murdoch's existence. "What is it?" I asked instead. "Is something wrong? Is it not what you thought?" I was thinking that Haven might have been turned into a vampire, instead of being a human with strangely inhuman strength.

"I don't know, I haven't seen that reaction before." Miss Munro stood up and went to meet the human in the middle of the room, but the liquid only got more agitated as she came closer. "Back up," she told the man. "Go back to your side of the room." I could've sworn I heard some kind of sourness in her voice, but I paid little mind. My eyes were set on Crow, who had tensed and was watching the man with wide and scared eyes. I didn't want to imagine the thoughts going through his mind, since he was most likely imagining the worst ever possible scenario.

The liquid in the beaker simmered down, the colour in the glass turning back to a pale yellow. "What happened?" the human asked, his eyes narrowing on Crow. He pointed accusingly. "This has to be something to do with you."

"It doesn't," Crow denied immediately. "Please don't say it has something to do with me. I've had enough surprises for the rest of my immortal life." His voice was pleading. I wanted nothing more than to go over there and wrap my arms around him, comforting him until he felt better. "It could just be faulty."

Miss Munro looked offended. "It is not faulty, it's perfect. It's just never happened before."

Aldrich gasped and put both of his hands over his mouth. His eyes were wide, and he didn't look away from Crow. I was slightly thankful that it wasn't me he was looking at, but my heart twinged with sympathy for Crow and those around him. "Crow, you have two mothers."

Crow's left eye twitched. "Yes, I'm aware of who my parents are. Why is this relevant?" He looked around, silently asking those around him if Aldrich was alright, and if he needed any mental assistance. "I'm pretty sure I've been their son my whole life."

"Who's your dad?" Geppetto asked, probably piecing together why Aldrich looked like he was a video which was failing to load. "You know a man for a few hundred years, you get to know his thought process," he muttered afterward. "Anyway, who?"

Crow's expression turned to one of confused anger. "I don't know," He raised his free hand. "I never asked, and I never really wanted to know." I couldn't imagine being in that position, but I could slightly relate to the idea of parents maybe being something entirely different that you didn't expect. I knew my parents throughout my childhood, but maybe Crow's childhood was happy enough that he didn't really wonder who his biological father was.

"Well, you do now," Geppetto told him smoothly. "This could change things."

Murdoch began to laugh, a bit manically. I was waiting for the time when he would be taken away from me and possibly locked up, both because of what he did to Haven, and his entire attitude. "Then there'll be more hybrids to mess with."

I inhaled deeply and addressed the whole room. "Even if there were humans who were experimented on by Bertrand, there were humans attacking random vampires." I looked between Sawyer and Aldrich. "It might not have been random, but there was an attack on the house, and there were more humans being attacked by the same people."

The older human, the one who had held the bubbling mixture, lifted his head and asked, "humans were attacked?" He looked towards his fellow humans, or what I assumed to be humans, in concern. "By other humans?"

"That's not unusual," Caio commented. "It just so happened that these humans also attacked four vampires at the same time. Maybe it just says a lot about the vampires in question." He really was laying this bad boy attitude on thick. Maybe he was scared of being too complimentary, in case people think he's going soft.

"I doubt that," Aldrich responded with venom dripping from his words. "But yes, humans were casualties in whatever happened the other night. That's why we went to Italy in an attempt to get answers, which was very useful." Now he was sounding much like Caio.

Geppetto and Aldrich had a stare down, but I didn't pay attention to who won. Miss Munro tapped her foot impatiently. "So, can we get the human hybrid by herself?" It was the same attitude that Bertrand had, but at least she was being polite and asking first. She had a spark in her eyes which thirsted for knowledge. "I need to see if it reacts differently, without the interference of more possible dormant vampire genes." I was sure she didn't mean to sound accusing, but she did.

"Sure," Haven said after a moment of silence. I got the feeling that she didn't know that everyone was waiting for her answer. Her face paled as she stood, but she stayed on the human side of the room and shuffled closer to the bubbling beaker.

"What do you call that thing?" I asked, my voice working before my mind could comprehend it. "The mixture, whatever it is." I nodded towards the beaker. I was tired of referring to it as the bubbling beaker in my mind.

Miss Munro shrugged her shoulders. "It's just a detector, that's all I've called it in my notes." She looked very proud to have notes, as her nose rose even higher in the air.

I wasn't about to burst her bubble, so I nodded and turned back to the detector. It reminded me of a witch's cauldron, a steaming multicoloured concoction which could be used to turn humans into frogs.

As Haven approached the beaker, the human male held it in his hand and brought it closer. The mixture began to darken again, nearly turning a blood red as it reached her.

"Interesting," Miss Munro muttered. It seems that vapour which we saw earlier, which darkened, might be because of the dormant vampiric genes from Mister Clawdon." I wasn't sure about that, but I didn't know enough about chemistry or biology to argue. "Take the beaker off him." She nodded towards Haven.

Haven looked like she could think of a million things which she would prefer doing, but she hesitantly took the beaker off the man, holding it far away from her torso as the liquid began to get angrier. "Is that right?" She looked like a school child asking if she'd solved a math equation correctly, my heart did a small jump to my throat at how vulnerable she looked.

"Don't think you can hold a beaker incorrectly, dear," Aldrich said. It was clear he was nearing the end of this tether. He moved back to the front of the room and clapped his hands. The sound nearly made Haven drop the detector. "Right, what are we going to do? We've been sat here for around half an hour, with no sign of a game plan."

I sighed in relief, finally someone was saying the right thing. "I vote for someone to take this man out of my hands before I rip his arms off," I said. I felt my shoulders relaxing as the words left me. I ignored the look I received from Murdoch, which took all my guts. He had turned to me and hissed, eyes bright red and fangs showing. He still felt like a child who was dressed up as Dracula for Halloween, but maybe a murderous child.

"Good call," Aldrich replied and nodded towards me. "We're either going to kill him or put him in one of our most secure jails." I wondered how many jails the vampire community had, but from what I had figured out so far, they were either hit or miss when it came to trapping other vampires.

"Do we need to vote?" Crow asked almost innocently. I hid a smile, because I knew what his vote would be. "What about the humans who were experimented on?" He chewed on his bottom lip and looked towards Haven, who was still nervously holding the beaker in both hands.

"I think we should try to find them," a random vampire said and stood up. The person who had acted like the leader was worryingly quiet, but I tried to ignore that. I wasn't sure who I could trust on either side of the room. "We could use the detector and find them."

"Then what?" Haven asked, voice shaking. "What do you hope to find by finding the humans who were experimented on?" I could hear in her voice that she had already declared herself as one of them.

"Then we find out who exactly is orchestrating the attacks," Aldrich answered.

"And we destroy them," Geppetto finished.
