Chapter 8
THE NEXT DAY, Madeline and Michael follow the sound with their family and come upon a forest.
Madeline. Which way should we go?
Amelia. Let us split up.
Henry. I say that Kaitlyn and I keep watch out here. Amelia and Johnathan go to the left, and Madeline and Michael go to the right. That way, we can get the most ground covered and find the source more quickly.
Kaitlyn. That is a great idea! And the two of us can shout if anything happens or someone finds us.
Amelia. I agree.
Everyone else agrees, and they team up and split to explore the forest.
After a while, the two couples arrive at a frozen fortress and stare at its magnificence.
Madeline. This looks amazing.
Amelia. I agree. Will this give us the answer to who or what is sending us the call?
Madeline. Maybe. The only way to find out is to go inside.
Johnathan. We will stay out here and keep watch.
Amelia and Madeline go inside the fortress and see murals of their parents.
Amelia. These must be from when they were young.
Madeline. Yes, so.
Amelia. They were so in love. And they still are.
The voice calls out to them again, and this time, it is louder. They follow the sound to an open space big enough to be a ballroom.
Amelia. For what was this place used?
Madeline. Maybe parties, balls, or other such social gatherings?
Amelia. Maybe. I would love to have a party here. It is too bad this fortress was abandoned.
The voice calls out to them again, and it is one of the murals of their mother. She was calling out to their father because she had been captured. The next mural showed their father following the sound and saving their mother.
Madeline. Do you think we hear our mother's siren song because a danger is coming?
Amelia. Could be.
The two of them leave the fortress and tell their husbands. Once the four of them leave the forest, they tell Kaitlyn and Henry, and the six return to the castle in case anything happens.
As the group returns home, they hear a commotion beyond the gates. Upon entering, the three couples see snow everywhere, blankets are being handed out, firewood is being divided among the staff to heat the castle, and everyone is panicking.
Amelia. Why would there be snow? It is not even winter yet!
Madeline. I have no idea. I know it is not my power because I have not had any events to cause my magic to be used.
Henry. There may be a sudden change in the weather. Sometimes, the weather can go from being warm to very cold.
Kaitlyn. It is very possible. I have experienced strange weather where I live.
Madeline, Amelia, Kaitlyn, Henry, Johnathan, and Michael head inside the castle to check on their children, and they are snuggled up by the fire with their nanny and listening to a story for nap time.
Amelia. Thank you again for reading them. Here is your pay.
Amelia gives the nanny one hundred forty dollars and helps Madeline and Kaitlyn change them and prepare them for their nap.
The nanny makes her way to the door to leave but stops.
Nancy. Could I repay you for your gracious payment and allow me to watch your children?
Henry. You do not need to repay us. Your kindness and willingness to watch them is payment enough. We would not want anyone else to watch over them.
Nancy. That is exceedingly kind of you, thank you. If you ever need my services again, you can reach me. Have a good afternoon, and stay safe in this weather.
Henry. You are, too. We will keep you in mind if we ever need a nanny.
Henry closes the door as Nancy leaves, and he heads upstairs to assist the others in the naptime routine. Once the children are asleep, the group heads to the kitchen for hot cocoa.
Madeline looks out the window and sees the entire kingdom is covered in snow.
Johnathan. It is coming down out there.
Michael. Hopefully, everyone is safe and warm inside their homes.
The snow lasts several weeks, and the kingdom is covered in deep snow. The castle and its surrounding citizens are nearly out of logs for their chimneys. Madeline and Michael go to town to buy more logs for their kingdom, but there is only enough for three households.
Madeline. We should see if neighboring kingdoms can send some logs for us and our citizens.
Michael. That is a great idea! We need firewood for everyone. I would hate for anyone to go without proper heating in this weather. I do hope it ends soon.
Madeline. As do I. So many have died from this storm because they were sick, or they did not have enough immunity. I feel awful for the children and babies.
Michael. The majority of the deceased have children from birth to 5 years old.
Madeline. It is sad.
They return to the castle and send an express letter to Kaitlyn and Henry's kingdom to inquire about the firewood. Thankfully, they received a response stating that the firewood would be there in three days.
Amelia. Is that going to be quick enough?
Madeline. We have to hope it is.
The following three days go by, and they receive the firewood. There is enough for all the citizens and the royal families. The delivery people hand out the logs to everyone, and each of them gratefully accepts. The logs go quickly, and there is enough room for the three families in the castle.
Kaitlyn. Thank goodness we got the firewood in time. I do not know how long we would have survived, especially the children.
Henry. Thankfully, there was enough for everyone.
Johnathan. Yes, that is a perfect thing indeed.
Madeline. We are lucky to have such amazing neighbors. And the townsfolk are so kind and understanding. I cannot imagine living in a world where the citizens or monarchs are treated poorly.
The weeks turn into months, and the snow is finally letting up. The fallen snow remains, but the kingdom is relieved to see no falling snow. Unfortunately, it is now October, and winter is only two months away. Madeline strolls in her garden and notices that the flowers have become ice. Strangely enough, the flower is still alive, just encased in ice.
Madeline smiles as she admires the iced flowers and wonders what it would be like to make flowers from her powers.
Kaitlyn. The garden looks lovely. Is this from the winter storm?
Madeline. Yes. I suggest adding a few ice flowers. To match the theme.
Kaitlyn. That would look awesome.
Madeline uses her powers to make ice flowers. The flowers are roses, periwinkles, forget-me-nots, and daisies. All of them are in various colors and look pretty, like ice sculptures.
Kaitlyn. They are beautiful. You are so excellent at her skill. Amelia is fortunate to have such a fantastic sister.
Madeline. Sometimes, I wonder if she would be better with a sister who is not cursed with ice and snow powers. Why was I chosen? What did I do to have been cursed with these powers?
Kaitlyn. I speak for everyone when I say that you are not cursed. This is a beautiful gift, and no matter what you did or did not do to have them, you are terrific and talented with your powers. Anyone would kill to have powers as unique as yours.
Madeline. Do you think so?
Kaitlyn. I know so.
Madeline. Everyone loves you, powers or not.
Amelia. She is right, you know?
Michael. I am the luckiest man ever to live because I married you, and I loved you because you are kind, compassionate, intelligent, funny, and beautiful.
Johnathan. I am lucky to have you as my sister-in-law because you have such charm and charisma, and I love how you can think on your feet when trouble arises and always know how to get out of a sticky situation.
Henry. You are the best cousin-in-law ever because of your quirkiness, and you ensure that all the townsfolk are cared for and protected from danger.
Amelia. And even with this storm that passed, you offered a helping hand when someone needed it the most, and you consoled the families and parents that lost a sibling, a child, a grandchild, or even someone who lost their parents or grandparents.
Madeline. I mean that much to everyone.
Amelia. Yes. And we would not have it any other way. Your children, husband, and we are lucky to have you and love you in our unique ways.
The six warmly hug and gather the children in the garden for a picnic. The group laughs and plays, and the children squeal with delight as they enjoy the nice summer breeze and play with their parents and cousins.
After the picnic, everyone heads inside to clean the house and give away old toys and items that are no longer wanted. The family loves giving their stuff to others who may need life essentials or want things for the family, such as children. The best time for giving away unwanted items is during Christmas because they have a line of people at their doors, and the townsfolk can take what they want until the items run out.
When the house is cleaned and cleared out, the families decide to take a stroll through town, and they have so much fun shopping, meeting new people, helping others, and having a nice meal at a local restaurant. They have various foods, such as hamburgers, cheeseburger, fish, and chicken. They share five containers of fries and chicken nuggets, and all get milkshakes. Three milkshakes are chocolate, three vanilla, two strawberry, and two mint. After the meal, everyone returns home to sleep, and they snuggle under the covers, content with the day they have spent and knowing that they will always have each other, and that love will never tear them apart.
The day is peaceful and full of joy and happiness. There is no care in the world as everyone enjoys peace and spends quality time with their families. Everything is perfect and right, and the sisters of Malidona would not have it any other way.
