Chapter 7
THREE MONTHS LATER: Madeline and Michael are at the hospital, visiting their daughter. Madeline holds Rachel's tiny hand, and Michael softly strokes her hair.
Madeline. She is so strong and beautiful. I am happy that she is growing.
Michael. As am I. I hope we can bring her home soon.
Madeline. Me too.
At that moment, the doctor informs that Rachel has responded to all the tests performed, and her results come back clear. The couple was also told that their daughter weighs in around the average of a 30-week-old baby and that Rachel should be able to go home within a few weeks.
Madeline and Michael thanked the doctor and smiled.
Madeline. I am so glad we will be bringing our daughter home. These past few months have been tough. We have not been able to hold her, kiss her, or have skin-to-skin contact. And the only way I have been able to feed her is by providing breast milk through a tube.
Michael. I know how you feel about the lack of physical touch between us and our daughter. I cannot imagine how it must feel not to be able to breastfeed directly.
Madeline and Michael spend a few hours with their daughter and leave the hospital to head home. The two tell their family and friends about the good news, and everyone celebrates.
Madeline and Michael go to the hospital with Logan in the following three weeks to bring Rachel.
Madeline. I cannot believe we are finally bringing home our daughter. I am so glad that she fought and made it through all of the obstacles.
Michael. I know. I am so excited to have our tiny girl home and be able to hold, kiss, and hug her.
Madeline and Micheal sign out their daughter and place Rachel in her car seat. After getting Rachel's and Logan's car seats set and secured, the happy family arrives home after a few minutes of driving and sets Rachel in her crib. The next day, everyone visits to see Rachel. Everyone is so in love with Rachel as they are with her twin brother.
After a while, everyone heads to their castles to get some sleep. Madeline feeds Rachel and Logan and gets them ready for bed. After the twins are bathed and changed, Madeline puts them in their separate cribs and goes to the room she shares with Michael. They get ready for bed and snuggle together under the covers.
Two years later, the family is on vacation in Florencia. Madeline, Michael, Rachel, and Logan spend time at the beach in the morning; Kaitlyn, Henry, and Laura go to the children's museum, and Amelia, Johnathan, and Celena go to the family fair. For lunch, everyone meets at a local restaurant, and the rest of the evening is spent watching fireworks.
Unfortunately, Kaitlyn becomes sick and is taken back to their hotel. She spends a few hours throwing up, resting in between, and trying to keep down liquids and food. The following day, Kaitlyn goes to the local doctor's office and finds out she is allergic to shellfish, specifically shrimp. The good news is that she was the only one who ate the shrimp, but the bad news is that she had to be taken to a hospital. While at the hospital, tests and examinations are performed to control the reaction, and Kaitlyn is given an EpiPen for future incidents, should they occur?
Kaitlyn, Henry, and Laura leave the hospital and return to the castle. Kaitlyn tells everyone about the incident and that she has medicine if she eats something with shrimp. The rest of the day is spent at the castle, and everyone plays board games and card games and enjoys their time together as a family.
One day, the family is outside in the garden, watching the birds and having a picnic. Rachel comes up to Madeline and Michael with a bouquet.
Rachel. I found roses. There are pink, purple, orange, blue, green, yellow, and red roses. I pick two of each color.
Madeline. They are beautiful, darling. I love them.
Michael. As do I.
Rachel placed the flowers on the table so the beautiful bouquet could be placed in a glass vase with water. Once the flowers are in a water vase, Rachel returns to the picnic with her mother, who puts the flowers in the vase.
After a while, everyone goes inside and plays games, such as charades and Jenga. Then, each family returns to their castles, and night and silence falls upon the kingdoms as they drift peacefully into sleep.
A few years later, the families are at an amusement park, and they ride rollercoasters, play fair games, and go on the Ferris wheel and the merry-go-round and carousel. After a while, they stop at a fast food shop and order burgers and kids' meals.
The kids play in a play place at the shop and have fun crawling through tunnels, sliding down slides, and playing pretend to be pirates and mermaids.
Rachel calls the kids over, and they put their shoes on and collect their toys. Everyone leaves to head back to the castle. The families stay for a while, and then each family splits to go to their castle for the night.
As the evening winds down and everyone gets ready for bed, a strange noise whispers in the wind. Madeline hears the noise and checks every room and corridor for the origin of the noise. It is like a siren call, beckoning her to follow and leading her to a place unknown.
When Madeline confirms that there is no one or nothing in the castle, she heads back to her room and gets ready for bed. Madeline tells Michael about the noise, and he says that they can check again in the morning.
Several weeks ago, Madeline heard the same beckoning call, luring her to explore further, but she never complied. Each time the call is made, the family checks the castle and turns up empty-handed.
Madeline. I do not know why I am hearing the call. It feels like it is meant for me, but why would it be at night? It always calls at night for no reason, and no one can answer for the sound.
Michael. We could ask if your sister hears the same thing. She is your twin; sometimes, one twin senses something the other does not, and sometimes, they both sense and hear the same thing.
Madeline. That could work. I will write her a letter right now.
Madeline writes a letter asking if Kaitlyn has heard the same thing. Once finished, she gives the letter to the mail carrier, and the letter arrives at Kaitlyn's castle shortly after.
Kaitlyn thanked the mail carrier, took the envelope, and opened it to find a letter. She reads the letter and is surprised by what it says.
My dear sister,
I have heard a strange noise, a call, beckoning me into the unknown. I have been hearing this call for the past three weeks. I hope you have listened to the same call and know what I mean. Please write back with your answer and a meeting date and time. The tea house should be built by the port since it is relatively quiet at the time of the year.
With love,
Madeline
Kaitlyn quickly makes her way to the office and writes back a reply. She states they can meet at the tea house the following evening to discuss the call. Kaitlyn also states that she has heard the same call for three weeks.
The following evening, Madeline and Kaitlyn meet at the tea house, and they order two black teas and scones.
Madeline. It is so good to see you again.
Kaitlyn. Same to you. I know it has only been a few weeks; being so far apart feels like forever.
Madeline. I agree. Now, about the call.
Kaitlyn. Who or what do you think it is? Is it important?
Madeline. I do not know. But every time I hear it, it is always a female voice.
Kaitlyn. Me too! We could go together and follow the call to wherever it leads.
Madeline. That sounds like a good idea. We should also bring our husbands; Amelia and Johnathan could accompany us.
Kaitlyn. Yes! And we could hire a nanny to watch the children.
Madeline. Sounds like we got everything planned out. I will write to Amelia to inform her of the plan, and we will tell Michael and Henry.
The sisters agree and finish their lunch. The two return to their respective castles and tell their husbands of the plan. Within minutes of sending the letter to Amelia, Madeline receives a reply that she and Johnathan agree to the trip.
A couple of dayslater, the three couples are at Madeline and Michael's castle, and they informmany of every detail of the kids and their routines, and then they are off tofind the source of the call.
