CHAPTER 8: Closer

Dad Joke of the Day: "I don't trust the stairs. They're always up to something."

Thank you so much for all the support you guys give me!

-----------------------------

"And then he said, you have such a pretty smile!" Sooyoung's voice was low but it was bursting with enthusiasm. "For a minute, Somin, I was unable to respond, but when I pulled myself out of my trance, everyone was looking at me and all I could do was just blush red."

The two girls were seated in vacant backseats of the arena where Gaon Chart Music Awards were being held at the moment. Most of the idols occupied the west wing, just in front of the stage to get a better view. The fans were settled in the entire rest of the hall. It was dark there but the variously shaped vibrant lightsticks made it easier to illuminate the hall. They were holding banners and posters. When Somin and Sooyoung realized that making time for a hangout in their busy schedules was a lost cause, they decided to turn their schedules into a hangout.

"Maybe he was just following the script?" Somin guessed.

She shook her head quickly. "No! I checked his script when he wasn't looking and I swear there wasn't such a compliment for this episode." Although they didn't sit with there respective groups as the program proceeded, the girls still had to act attentive. Which is why their eyes were fixed at the stage as they chatted. "Sungjae meant it, Som."

"Okay, okay I believe you." Somin laughed. "So, can we say that he's flirting with you?"

"Dunno." Sooyoung waved to the crowd with a big smile. "But you're his friend. Can't you find out if it's real?"

She rolled her eyes. "We were never that close to share this type of stuff, plus he's my senior!"

Sooyoung threw her a don't-give-me-that-shit look. "Yeah, like anyone being your senior can ever stop you from what you want. You don't even use the honorifics most of the times."

Somin sighed, "Ahh.. okay. I'll try. But what am I going to say? ... 'Hi Sungjae! Hope you're doing well. By the way, I was just wondering if you're in love with my friend Sooyoung--"

"Shut up, don't be so loud!" Sooyoung gasped. She glanced at Somin warningly, "His table isn't too far, he might hear you."

Just then, a young male idol passed their table. He was looking smart in baggy trousers, crop top, and black loafers. Sooyoung quickly jumped from her place upon seeing her senior and bowed before him, and greeted. Somin looked closely as she also stood up slowly and bowed a little. Oh holy shit, this is Taemin! Her bow arched immediately.

"Annyeong haseyo, sunbae-nim!" She greeted with a genuine smile. She'd adored this guy all her training period. Taemin's eyes moved from his junior to Somin and he was quiet for a moment. Until he recognized her.

He smiled lightly as he tilted his head in concentration. "Ahh.. you're that--the one who did that somersault in V chart awards, didn't you?"

Her smile widened, "Ne. You were watching?"

Taemin nodded his head, "Yeah. It was so cool!" He turned to Sooyoung. "You know each other?" His junior nodded quickly.

"I'm so happy to hear you found it impressive. You're my role model. I--I hope to dance like you one day." Somin's face flushed.

"Oh, thank you!" Taemin smiled gently. "I'm sure if you work harder, you will."

He bowed and left on his way. "Woah." Sooyoung let out a heavy breath and they sat down again."Okay, so where were we?"

"I've told you a thousand times." Somin leaned in her ear with a wise expression, "Just act cool like you don't want them and these guys come chasing after you like a homeless puppy." I speak from experience.

Sooyoung narrowed her eyes at the advice, she knew it always worked for Somin but rarely in this case. "But I can't. I'm supposed to be his wife, remember?"

"Yeah, yeah." Somin adjusted her hair. She was wearing a perfectly fitted white dress, with glittery beads stitched on it. "Has he ever called you, texted you? That kind of thing?"

Sooyoung thought for a minute. "Um..not yet." Her eyes drooped in sadness. "But that just explains it, doesn't it? He doesn't want to see me out of schedule."

"You're getting carried away. I mean you've just started recording with him, slow down."

Sooyoung was looking ahead distantly. "He even said he heard Red Velvet's song the other day and said I looked the best out of them."

"Well, that's progress." Somin smiled, "Wait, maybe he hasn't got your number or something. I'll see what I can do at the after-party."

Sooyoung's eyes lit up. "Thank you! I know I can rely on you to fix this up."

She chuckled bemusedly, shaking her head. Turning her attention toward the stage again because the crowd had suddenly gone wild, she saw EXO receiving an award for Top Social Artist. Her eyes followed them, counting their number. A few members were absent, Sehun including. She sighed wondering how things were going in France for him.

Sooyoung's phone vibrated. She quickly excused saying their manager was looking for her because their performance was coming up. Somin got up to join her members too though she was avoiding it because there was still tension between the girls after the small row between the eldest members.

"Do we have a chance tonight?" Saebyul wondered.

Rio sighed, "I'm not keeping high hopes, it was such a heartbreak the last time we didn't win."

Ariya smiled, "It takes time, guys." Then she wiggled her brows at Somin. "But I wouldn't doubt Somin to get one."

Somin just rolled her eyes. Though she acted like it didn't matter to her much, on the inside her heart was beating rapidly in anticipation. There were two categories held for Rookies this year. One for groups and others simply for individual members who were admired and had become popular before or during the debut. And she was nominated as one.

It will be so extremely lucky if any of us win something tonight. But then again... I haven't done anything special to win a whole award.

Together, they watched several performances from Red Velvet, Day6, BTS, BIGBANG, Seventeen and commented on each of them. Ariya and Somin, the dancers, noted their specific moves so they could learn from it later. They cheered when their fav artists won an award or their faces flashed on the huge screen. They waved prettily whenever the camera focused on Aurora. They answered smartly when one of the MCs who was roaming between the guests, threw a few questions here and there.

Soon enough, when the host announced the next category, Somin's heart dropped to her feet. It was time. She gulped, gripping Rio's and Jae's hand as they were seated beside her. She couldn't bear looking at the stage so she trained her gaze on the beautiful bouquet of roses on their table. Her heartbeat was echoing in her ears and the extreme nervousness she felt gushing through her veins was making it harder by every minute. Saebyul muttered, "It's okay, Somin. We love you even if you don't win."

"I know, but--"

Suddenly the screen lit up with many faces of the nominees. They could see many familiar newbies. Some friends, some strangers--all rookies.

"It's not even about me but I'm going to die, I swear." Jae's breathing was getting heavy.

Somin finally looked up in anticipation when the host announced there were four rookies chosen-- each who dominated in the four quarters of the year. It was based on their TV show ratings, those you mostly trended, and ranking on Gaon Charts but mainly decided by a poll put up on their website. The announcer's face neared the mic as he spoke, "The lucky winners are Wonho of Monsta X, Naeun of April." He glanced at the card he was holding. "Young K of Day6 and Somin of Aurora."

Somin gasped, her heart pace reached an alarming level as her eyes got blinded with tears. She could see her band members whoop with an indefinite amount of happiness on their faces, the crowd cheering, and people applauding. "Somin, get up, go!" Rio nudged her.

She stood from her chair, still in a trance. "I-I can't go alone." Ariya and Saebyul pushed her forward anyway. Somin slowly walked up the long way to the stairs leading to the stage. She couldn't deny how her legs were shaking and the surprised expression on her face. She felt vulnerable with all the eyes on her suddenly. The camera zoomed on the winners and flashed them on the screen as they made their way to the stage.

Somin finally regained her conscience as she faced the crowd booming before her which made her come to terms with the fact that she, in fact, had been named as one of the four best Rookies of the year. The winners stood in a line and bowed 180 degrees as their awards were handed to them. "Chughahabnida!"

She wiped a stray tear from her cheek to see the view clearly. How many times have I been on stage hoping for this moment? Suddenly being on the high stage made everyone else look small and unimportant. It made her feel proud and mighty but Somin's eyes searched for her groupmates nonetheless. The four girls were standing and cheered, Ariya and Rio were crying, Saebyul's head was buried in Jae's shoulder while the latter stroked her back, their fight forgotten. She saw Sooyoung grinning at her proudly, and other idols she'd seen vaguely in Vibe nodding their head at the winners.

Suddenly, the microphone was handed to her. Shit, I don't even have a speech prepared. What the hell am I supposed to say? She wished she'd paid attention to her seniors who'd delivered such good speeches. Putting a confident smile nonetheless, she spoke, "Thank you so much! I-I have no words how to express my feelings, I never expected this." Her face broke out into a big smile. "But my efforts were never solely my own, this award belongs to my whole group, to Aurora, to my girls." Somin raised the award in their direction. "All the fans who voted for me, thank you. I'll show you, you made the right decision of choosing me. Thank you." She bowed deeply.

This night was going perfect, in fact, it was going to be the most memorable one of her entire life. But standing there on the stage, she just wished Sehun had been here to witness her special moment.

-

The cork of the champagne bottle flew out in a pop. Jae exclaimed, "Cheers to the lady of the night, Somin!"

The five girls took a swig of their drinks. It was the after-party of the music awards. Such gatherings were mostly organized after shows held in Korea. A time for idols to mingle and interact with each other after the fans had cleared from the venue so there was no risk of cameras or privacy. It was Aurora's first time to be in one and they were amazed to see everyone celebrating and chatting over drinks. Though it was optional to stay for the after-party, Aurora couldn't miss their first. Music could be heard in distance but mostly the general noise was made by idols who were probably catching up on their friends.

Ariya, who was almost wasted, burped loudly. "I think--I think Somin owes us a treat."

"Done."

Saebyul squealed, "Cube better treat us good after this." She poured herself more drink. "And pay us well."

Rio added, "And grants us some days off."

Somin grinned, "And frees us from these stupid restrictions." She rolled her eyes, imitating their manager's squeaky voice. "No dating! You can't spend the night out without my permission! No talking to boys! No fast food! No social media!"

The girls burst into laughter. Jae continued, "No sleeping! No breathing!"

Rio had to take support from all the cracking up. "She'll kill us if she hears this!"

A group of boys Somin deduced as fellow nominees came over and congratulated her. She smiled and thanked in return. She realized she'd have to get used to this, they were the fifth of that night to congratulate her. When the girls broke up to meet other people, Somin took her way alone around the hall, looking for familiar faces.

After a while she saw Jackson Wang of GOT7, grinning and waving his hands in the air to get her attention. He looked busy with his teammates so she just smiled and waved back and didn't make her way to him. He mouthed 'Congratulations' and made a thumbs-up sign making Somin grin.

As she left Red Velvet's table after some time, Somin met more people and joined HyunA for a little chat. After a while, in a corner, she spotted Sungjae and Jae talking animatedly. She smiled, her mind drifting towards Sooyoung's requests and made her way to the pair of them. They were making fun of their managers.

Sungjae was saying, "--but I swore to myself that day never to say such things on a broadcast." His eyes fell on Somin who'd just joined them. "Oh look who's here!! My winner dongsaeng!" He opened his arms and gave Somin a half hug. She beamed.

"You looked like you were going to puke when they announced your name. Make sure to react better next time."

"Okay boss." She chuckled. Jae noted, "Cube wouldn't be very happy with your speech, you know."

"Why not?"

Sungjae nodded at Jae. "I was thinking of the same thing! You didn't mention our agency, that how much the staff, managers supported you and especially Papa Hong who gave you all the strength and that you owe all your success to him!" He ended dramatically.

She frowned, "That's bullshit! I'm not taking this. And what do they owe me for a Rookie award? They are nothing but discouraging."

Sungjae shrugged his shoulders. "We all do it no matter what." He threw Jae a mischievous glance, "Don't ever let her meet your mother."

Jae replied. "Never! You should have seen the look on our manager's face when we found out about that scandal of Red Velvet's manager--"

Somin's eyes widened alarmingly and elbowed her group mate in the stomach, knocking the glass out of her grip. "Oh no!" Jae exclaimed, the liquid had stained her clothes but Somin wasn't guilty. Anything to shut her mouth.

Sungjae touched Jae's arm worriedly and led her to a nearby table. "Come on, sit over here." Somin watched as he took a couple of tissue papers and helped her to soak it while it was wet. "You okay?" Jae nodded. After he was done, he looked up, "So what was that? About Red velvet's manager?"

"Huh?" Jae shook her head quickly. "Nothing, I said nothing."

He chuckled at her cute expression. Then he raised an eyebrow at Somin who didn't respond. He sighed and looked back at Jae. "Let me guess. I heard about the scandal. There were some issues about security regarding him, right? Joy told me something, I don't really remember."

Somin's eyes lit up and took the opportunity to spark the topic. "How's it going with Joy? Do you like working with her?" She tried to sound casual. "Your darling wife?"

Sungjae nodded, "Yeah... it's pretty nice." He grabbed more tissues and handed it to Jae. Somin narrowed her eyes, he doesn't look too enthusiastic to talk about her...

"I think you have very good chemistry with her, you know." She commented, though it was a lie because she'd never watched any episode of their show. "You both look so cute together!"

"Thanks, she is a really fun person to work with. I enjoy a lot." Sungjae smiled and cleared his throat. "Anyways... um, so what was I telling you, Jae? Oh yes, about my manager's temper issues..."

Fun person to work with? 'Work', that's all?

Somin couldn't pinpoint what was going on. According to Sooyoung, he was totally whipped for her and couldn't miss admiring her all the time but that didn't seem like the case now. She became silent as Jae and Sungaje continued their conversation. She would be lying to herself if she said she didn't notice the pleasing smiles he was passing to her own bandmate. I hope you wouldn't lead her on as well, Sungjae.

When Somin's phone rang up and she recognized the unknown number as Sehun's, a smile jumped up on her lips. She excused herself to a more private spot and received his call.

"Hey. How's it--"

"I hate you! I fucking hate you, Nam Somin!" Sehun roared with a voice full of fury making her frown. "Wait till I get my hands on you. I'm going to strangle your neck and you'll be so dead when I come back."

Somin grinned mischievously. "Aha, so you've finally realized?"

He went on indignantly, "I can't believe you did something like that to me. I was so nervous, do you have any idea how much you put my reputation at stake with that antic!?"

She laughed. "I'm sorry, I--"

"I trusted you when you told me that stupid French phrase. I tried to memorize it all the way on the plane, especially after that emotional speech about making my fans happy. I wanted to impress everyone but you were joking around with me all this time." He said. "I should have checked it with my translator first before saying it in a room full of people with such a confidence that could even make you jealous!"

"Oh my.." She had to cover her mouth with her hand to stop roaring in laughter because it garnered attention. "Really, Sehun, I... didn't mean to."

He scoffed. "Didn't mean to, my ass." He sighed vexedly. "Yah, you don't even sound sorry!"

It was right though. Somin wasn't sorry. When he'd persuaded her to teach him a French phrase the other night, she thought it would be fun to mess with him a little. And knowing Sehun, she knew he'd never bother to question whatever she told him. So she went ahead and lied to him when she said it translated to 'I enjoy being here.'

"It literally meant 'this place really stinks'! aish.." Sehun groaned, as if just realizing the blunder he'd made. "My manager, my translator, everybody is so mad at me right now.. Imagine a foreigner insulting your country like that. They are never going to invite me again."

There were tears in her eyes now, though she still hoped she could see Sehun's face when he was told he'd been tricked so cruelly. She wiped the corners of her eyes. "I know I'm a horrible person but it was too good an opportunity to pass, Sehun. I just couldn't resist it and I'm so sorry."

Sehun rolled his eyes. "You're a wicked woman. I'm never going to take your word my whole life."

Somin bit back her smile. "So, aside from your little...uh mistake, how did the show go?"

He replied, "It was nice, it went well until your little mistake." He gritted his teeth, emphasizing on the word 'your'. "I met Raf Simons at the ending ceremony though."

Her mouthed formed the shape of 'o'. Raf Simmons? I'm so jealous I don't even feel bad for tricking him.  It was a dream of meeting the famous creative director of Christian Dior and Calvin Klein. "So it means they didn't kick you out?"

Sehun sounded less angry now, "No, they didn't thanks to my translator who handled the situation well saying it was a misunderstanding. But I bet you wanted me to get kicked out, didn't you?"

Somin shook her head as she walked around the hall. "No, I swear I didn't. It was supposed to be a joke, that's all. You didn't get in trouble, everything's good so no hard feelings?" She asked hopefully. He sure does seem like a guy to hold grudges.

He didn't reply. Wow, he must be really annoyed. Somin tried to change the topic, "So where are you right now?"

"In my hotel room. I'm planning to sleep the night. Why?"

Somin answered, "Sleep? Uh, you're so boring."

"Hey, I'm jet-lagged!" He insisted.

"Go out, you idiot!" She exclaimed. "The nightlife is so much more exciting in Paris than it is in Seoul."

Sehun was silent for a while but when he replied, she could pick the amusement in his voice. "Nightlife? What, you want me to hook up with a hot Frenchie or something?"

"Shut up." She narrowed her eyes threateningly though she knew he couldn't see it. "Don't even think about that."

Sehun was pleased to hear the sudden annoyance in her tone. He laughed that teasing laugh of his. "Well then, stop lecturing me on how to spend my night. I'd be very tempted, otherwise."

Somin sighed. She didn't realize that she'd almost walked the whole length of the hall while talking to him. "Aren't you going to ask me where I am?"

"Should I believe you?" He wondered. "You could just lie and I wouldn't know."

She exhaled loudly, "You sure know how to hold grudges."

"Of course. Who said I've forgiven you?"

She rolled her eyes. "Fine, then. Is that why you called me? I think your purpose is fulfilled." She hung up.

She was still pissed off. I can't understand why his suggestion got me so worked up but I don't like the idea of him hooking up with a girl. At. All.

When she decided to return to her table, Somin's eyes met with someone looking at her on SNSD's table. She recognized it as Taeyeon. Somin didn't know how to react but she smiled lightly. Taeyeon's eyes filled with recognition and she slightly nodded her head. I wonder how things are going for her and her boyfriend.

She saw many messages coming through her phone. All congratulatory, from her brother, Sooyoung, Eunwoo. Ten minutes later, Sehun called again, "Okay, I'm curious. tell me."

"What?"

"Where are you?"

"Why don't you guess?" She smiled.

"There's noise around you. Are you at Vibe?" Sehun asked.

"I'm at Gaon Chart Music Awards. Your group mates are here too. And.." She held her breath. "Will you believe if I tell you I won my first award tonight?"

Sehun laughed. "Who would give you an award? And for what? your cruel sense of humor?"

"I'm serious!" She cried indignantly.

"I don't believe you, you've lost my trust." He answered confidently.

Somin sighed, "Fine, ask your band members then. They were here too."

"You still didn't tell me what is it for."

"It's a Rookie award, okay? Don't be too jealous." She scoffed smugly.

Sehun laughed. She said, after a silence, "Send my love to Paris."

He smirked, "If you want me to send your love to Paris, you'll have to send your love to me first."

It made her crack up. "Keep dreaming. You wouldn't-- oh shit, my leader's coming. I'm hanging up, bye!"

-

Kai was scrolling through his news feed when he saw the news article pop-up and it instantly made him sit up on the couch in EXO's dance practice room. His eyes went through it quickly and he looked around in confusion. There was no way this happened and I don't get to hear about it from my band members before.

After a minute, when realization dawned upon him that it must be a fake, he shook his head. The door opened, revealing Baekhyun, Chanyeol, Chen, Xiumin, Suho, and D.O while Lay was on leave. Suho was saying, "Who's going to pick Sehun from the airport?"

"I think Youngjin hyung said he would," Chanyeol replied. "Or some other manager."

Kai who'd reached the practice room earlier, got up to join them. When he reached Baekhyun hyung, Kai just smirked.

"Congratulations on your break-up, hyung."

"Yah." Baekhyun glared at him in return. "It's not funny."

Chen laughed, "Why are you so upset about it." He walked through the huge, bright room and turned on the music from the equipment. "It's not even real."

Baekhyun sighed, "It's not real but ... it still hurts."

Suho and Kai exchanged a concerned glance. They all knew how things had taken an ugly turn for Baekhyun, just when EXO had begun to receive a good response from fans. And Kris's departure didn't help things at all. Everybody was devastate d to hear that EXO hadn't followed the infamous four-year rule and that fact that Baekhyun was dating an older and quite a popular artist made many people angry. Fans said they were 'betrayed'.People who called themselves fans petitioned to kick him out of the group and the poor vocalist and his girlfriend received hatred from every public appearance they made.

Chanyeol clapped Baekhyun's back. "But everything's clear now, isn't it? Now that we've declared that you and noona have broken up, fans will be back to normal."

D.O voiced out, "They will forget that it ever happened and you and sunbae-nim can date in peace."

"Huh, there's no peace," Baekhyun's voice was distant and pained. "Taeyeon isn't happy with this news, we argued a lot over it yesterday." He slumped on the couch and sighed. "I wanted to share my happiness with our fans but it seems like they aren't happy to share me."

The boys became silent. There was nothing any of them could do. The door opened again revealing a hurried Sehun in his corduroy pants and a hoodie. He looked like he'd landed straight from France to their practice room. Chen smiled, "Hey!"

The boys gathered around him excitedly asking about his trip and the fashion event. After he was done replying to everyone, Sehun turned to Baekhyun in question. "Hyung... I-uh read this news article on my way and-- um.."

His hands went through his hair in frustration. "It's not true," Xiumin answered for him. "Just a show for the public."

Sehun breathed in relief. Thank god, I'd almost thought he'd broken up. "Great, just be careful this time not to get caught." They all knew when a couple wasn't accepted by the public, the next strategy was to lie that they were dating so the couple could be removed from the camera's eyes.

He looked around in surprise when Baekhyun didn't say anything. "What's with the bad mood, guys?"

"It's still not good news," Chen stated. "For him."

Baekhyun chuckled humorlessly. "We might still be dating but I don't think it will remain that way for long."

Sehun frowned. 'Why did you agree on doing that if you both didn't want it?"

Baekhyun replied, "You think we have a say when SM officials have decided upon something? They said it was sabotaging our image so we need to end this drama."

Silence followed. Chen and Suho rubbed Baekhyun's arm to ensure him that his brothers will always be beside him, no matter what. "Let's start practicing."

Everybody took their places and began the choreography for their part in the upcoming world tour. As they rested a while during their halftime break, lying around on the couches and floor, Baekhyun evidently looked in better spirits.

Chanyeol, Baekhyun, and Kai were playing with an empty water bottle. Sehun scrolled through his Instagram while the elder members talked about EXO's upcoming winter album. Chen strolled inside and distributed freshly filled water bottles to everyone.

He said with a teasing smile, "Yah, Jongin! Aren't you wandering around f(x)'s practice room quite a lot lately?"

The lead dancer just grinned, "Umm yeah, well I'm doing a photo shoot with Krystal this month."

"Her and Taemin." Baekhyun corrected.

"Yeah, yeah."

Sehun complained, "You didn't even tell us! Not even me!"

"What? about the shoot?" Kai asked innocently.

Sehun rolled his eyes, "No, phabo. About this.. uhmm.." He coughed. "Recent development of your.."

Chen explained, "What he means is your interest in her."

D.O turned to Sehun. "But Jongin mentioned it to us once. You weren't around."

Kai responded to Sehun. "I was a little hesitant to say anything after you... pushed us to promise that.. but.." He trailed off, avoiding everyone's eyes.

When the situation had worsened for Baekhyun, Sehun who loved playing the role of keeping everyone on good terms made them, or more like forced them to promise to each other that they'd never get involved in dating until at least EXO's fandom was strong enough to take it. But thinking about it now...Sehun wasn't sure if he was keen on keeping that promise either.

But on a second thought, I wouldn't want to get into something that can get my group into trouble, would I? Nothing is more important than my brothers and our reputation.
Not even Somin.

Sehun fell into deep thought as the other members pestered Kai for more details. No words reached his ears. He felt agitated. He was happy with how things were going between them but seeing Baekhyun's sadness... he felt like backing out from this. Retreat before it gets out of hand.

The rest of the day passed in a flash. There was more dance practice and recording to do. Preparing for another fashion event in Seoul for tomorrow and discussion for their winter album with the producers---without a break.

His mood was down the whole time--caught between his duty and desire.
Somin's texts came though the whole day inquiring if he'd returned, asking about the trip, and whatsoever but Sehun ignored her.

-

"Please pass my toothbrush," Somin called from outside the bathroom currently occupied by her roommate Jae. She was taking too long and they were getting late for schedule.

A muffled voice called, "Just come inside."

Somin huffed, kicked open the door, and found her groupmate's head covered with blue curls and a shiny face mask. Somin threw her a questioning look as she began brushing her teeth.

Jae smiled, "Just getting ready."

Somin tried to speak clearly, "We neve' do thi' much effort."

Jae shrugged, "I felt like getting ready." After a while, she explained, "We're going to the head office today, aren't we?"

Somin frowned. She didn't get it but who cares. A girl should get dressed up and makeover when she pleases. After rinsing her toothpaste, she asked while applying her face cream. "You enjoyed yourself that day with him, didn't you?"

Jae didn't need any explanation for this 'him', she said, "Oh Somin, I was bursting to tell you! Sungjae is good at telling stories, he's funny. I don't get why I never got to know him before..."

Somin's pressed her eyes tightly in dread. She forced a smile, "Yeah, he is a great guy... So I was just wondering that--if Sungjae asked for your number that night?"

Jae raised a brow. "Oh, he didn't!" Somin breathed a sigh of relief. "But I hope he does.."

Somin whipped back to look at her. "What? You're--a-are you..." She couldn't form the words in her mouth. Jae just giggled, rolling her eyes and scurried off out of the washroom to their closet inside the small packed room.

Somin exhaled loudly, leaning against the washbasin and slacked her jaw tightly. Yook Sungjae, I'm going to kill you for doing this to both of my friends.

When their van entered Cheongdam District and passed by the huge SM Ent. building, Somin found her eyes searching the skyscraper. She glanced at her ever-silent phone again. He's been ignoring me so badly, is he still pissed off over that French thing? He's moodier than a girl on her period!

Seated in the brightly lit, luxuriously furnished meeting room in their own Head office, Aurora waited for Papa Hong, the founder of Cube, to come. After a while when he did enter along with a few executives, they all stood up and bowed. Jae winced upon seeing her mother.

He smiled, "I was just going over your progress report. Your sales and ranking is the best we've seen from any debut group in my agency." They flushed in happiness. "But you must know, this should only go higher from here."

"Of course." Saebyul bowed again.

He threw the group a demanding look. "Try to snatch some music wins with this upcoming comeback." They nodded, the pressure building upon them. Then he addressed Somin directly. "Congratulations on your award, I always knew you had the capability. But I'm sure you've been briefed already by your manager but I'd like to add." Somin sighed knowing what was coming. "Your speech was a little...lacking. You see, it's a must to mention your company's efforts. Our staff and officials will be very happy when you do."

She met his eyes. "Yes, you musn't elaborate, I've had that lecture already." A whole hour of scolding, she thought wearily.

"I've always said this to my artists, if you have a composition of yours ... a song, or a music piece, then do share. We always take it into consideration." He smiled. Somin breathed a sigh of relief, maybe someday I can take out my old diary and sing the songs I've written myself.

Jae's mother spoke for the first time. "Your managers mentioned to us something about your reluctance in obeying the agency's orders."

Somin's smile flattened. Shit.

Papa Hong's face hardened. "Well, I don't want to hear this complain again." He stated, glancing at Somin. "I told her to go easy on you because I didn't want to scare you just before your debut but..." He paused. "All of you must have gotten used to it now and it's time you followed our rules without resistance. It's part of your contract."

"Ah Sajang-nim, we're so sorry if we've been wrong." Saebyul quickly spoke. "I assure you this will never happen again." She nudged at Somin who was busy glaring her knees.

She looked up. "Yes, all of us will be extra careful."

Papa Hong smiled, "Of course, I know all of you are very sensible girls. You don't want to ruin your career at this stage by not going with what we order you." Somin raised her head at his hidden threat. Her blood was boiling with anger. We're bringing him more than his previous groups ever have yet he still has the audacity to tighten his hold on us.

Might as well take advantage of this situation.

She gulped and said, "Actually..." She glanced at Ariya. "We have a request of our own to make." She bit her lip. "The pay we got for all of these month... it's well... I'll be straight with you, Sajang-nim. It's not much."

The other girls gasped in shock. She went on sweetly, "And, as you said, we are sensible girls and we know all that we earn and we know that the percent of share we were promised to get according to the contract is not what we're getting."

Papa Hong's smirk made her surprised. He knew this would come up and especially by her. He realized her straight-forwardness and chivalry might get her listed in the industry's top idols one day. Instead of feeling threatened by her because whatever Somin said, she was still under his command at the end of the day, he smiled, "Yes, you're right. I was just getting to that."

He shifted in his seat. "There have been some issues with the finance team. Some of our investors withdrew their shares and things were a bit unstable but I'd rather you don't mess your pretty minds in that stuff--"

Somin cut him off, earning a few gasps from the people in the room. "Any financial distress should have nothing to do with us." She smiled widely. "You see, we have our families to support, debts to pay back..." She exchanged a glance with her group mates who nodded quickly. "I'm sure you'll notice better results and obedience from us if we're motivated enough."

Jae's mother scolded. "This is no way to talk with your founder! Are you questioning us? Are you accusing us of deceiving--"

"Mom, please!" Jae cried out. Somin narrowed her eyes, trying to control her temper. The conversation was light until her mother intervened.

"That's enough." Papa Hong coughed. He turned to the girls. "You have your debts to pay to us first. Which is why your salary will not be what we promised. And you all have just debuted, all groups become stable after years, don't be hasty."

oh so you'll drain our earned money as you like, and we'll just have to sit back and wait for another group to become your target so that we finally get what we deserve.

Saebyul tried. "But I'm sure we can reach an agreement where both parties can be satisfied--"

Papa Hong's tone was final. "There will be no discussion over this today. It's totally out of question at this stage."

The heavy feeling of injustice descended upon the girls and  they gave up. Saebyul spoke in a timid voice, "When will our promotions start in Japan? You see-" she looked at Ariya "-we have a Japenese member and, what I mean is she hasn't had a break for months--"

"Foreign members will have to fend for themselves." Jae's mother's voice was curt. "We never promised any sort of lenience just because somebody came for a faraway place, that was your choice. Yes, we feel for you but there is nothing we can do. And you will be notified of your promotion schedule after your comeback."

Jae was shaking with anger as she glared at her mother. When the meeting ended after half an hour or so, she signaled her members to leave when Papa Hong exited. When it was just her and her mother in the room, she said, "Why are you doing this?!"

The older woman threw her a daughter a tired look. "What's the matter?"

"What's the matter?" Jae gasped, the tears shining in her eyes. "You ruined my life, at least keep my bandmates out of this."

"You're being too dramatic." She berated. "Just because you girls are a little over twenty doesn't mean you're wise enough to make your own decisions. We're guiding you."

"Trust me, you aren't. You are nothing but demoralizing. I wish I could tell the world what monsters Cube hides behind their fancy walls!" She spat through clenched teeth.

"But you won't dare."

Jae said miserably, "Yes. I wouldn't be doing this if I had the guts to stand against you." She went on. "But I'm telling you, I did what you wanted, so stop pushing Aurora or I swear I'll do something you will regret your whole life!"

Her mother sighed and walked nearer to her and caressed her daughter's hair. "Don't fight like this, darling--"

Jae jerked her head away from her reach, her eyes full of loathing. "Don't touch me." She reached for the door. "And stay away from my friends."

The door slammed shut. Jae couldn't meet her member's eyes the whole time. She kept apologizing and totally agreed when Somin cursed her mother and Cube's treatment towards them. The girls didn't blame her, they told her it wasn't her fault. They were finally getting to experience and understand Jae's woes about her unfair mother.

"What's the schedule for this week?" Rio asked their manager.

She replied after analyzing their schedule plan. "You have mostly comeback preparations except a fan sign event on Thursday. And Dream Concert 2015 this weekend. Oh yes, you'll meet with the choreographer day after tomorrow."

"Oh shit, no.." Rio whined. She sucked at synchronizing her moves.

"Album jacket photoshoot next week... and lot's of recording before we move onto the MV shooting." The manager looked up. "But there's something interesting for tomorrow." The girls perked up. "Saebyul, you have a perfume commercial to shoot. Rio doesn't have anything except for an appointment with her doctor. Somin and Jae will be attending the Seoul Fashion Week and... Ariya, you will be recording that OST."

"OST?" Saebyul asked.

Ariya nodded with a smile. "Yes, I'm doing the soundtrack of an upcoming Japanese anime."

"That's great!" The others exclaimed.

When Aurora took a break from recording after completing two tracks from their comeback album, all girls were allowed to move around for a break. Somin decided to meet up with HyunA unnie and she wandered around the building to catch her somewhere but it was all in vain because she found her nowhere. In the end, she went off to 20 Space, the cafe owned by the agency, to soothe her hunger.

Somin felt sour, not only because Sehun was ignoring her existence to no avail and it was getting on her nerves, but also because the entire day had been a disaster especially because she was eating alone. But to her utter surprise and pleasure, a trainee came over to saying Somin was her role model and asked to join her on lunch and Somin was more than welcome.

They chatted about almost everything, ranging from Cube's excellent treatment and promotional planning (please note the sarcasm) to the lack of cheese in their pizzas. Somin already felt a bond with this trainee, she was cool, had a hard cold face that would make you shudder in fear but sweeter when you get to know her.

"Do you know where HyunA unnie is these days?" Somin complained as they were paying for their lunch. "I've been looking around everywhere.."

The girl replied, "Have you checked the training center on the third floor?"

"Training center?" She chuckled. "She's been an idol for a decade now, why would she--"

"She's friends with a guy there." The trainee shrugged. "I don't know him much, you know how Cube loves to separate the female and male trainees but I have seen them walking around."

"What's she doing with a rookie?" Somin was confused.

"Dunno, they're always together lately. They look like pretty good friends. I heard from someone that his group will debut next year." The trainee said.

Somin narrowed her eyes. That's fishy, looks like unnie will have some explaining to do when we meet. "Thanks, though. I hope to see you around!"

"I never thought I'd meet you. You always looked so cold... and well scary to approach. All of my friends fear you. Yet they still want to be like you." The trainee smiled. "Good luck on your comeback, sunbae-nim!"

"Ew.." Somin scrunched her nose, oddended which made the other girl laugh. "Don't ever call me that again."

"Ah, okay."

"What was your name again?" Somin wrapped her arms around the girl's shoulders affectionately.

"Soyeon." She bowed. "See you around." They waved and went off their ways. As Somin reached Aurora's recording room, she almost jumped when she heard Jae laughing. Somin looked closely and noted that it was yet again, Btob's Sungaje on her side. Jae was saying, "I never thought I'd run into you again!"

Somin almost laughed because that sounded like such a lie. So this is why she got dressed up like a model and was so excited to be here.

Though she couldn't pin down the exact reason, Somin felt a little off to see this blooming friendship. She felt bad for her best friend, for Sooyoung who had been texting her, asking if Somin asked him about them as promised but Somin couldn't muster up the courage to reply. She didn't want to crush her friend's hopes. Yet.

Sehun and Suho jumped put from their black sleek van, stepping on the red carpet. Flashing their most dazzling smiles to numerous cameras, they waved while walking the blue carpeted stairs to the elevated stage.

Sehun shoved his hands in his pocket and posed. He could spot many artists here and there, it was after all just the third day of Seoul Fashion Week 2015. The host was dressed prettily and asked him a few questions about where he got his inspirations of fashion from and about his Fashion trip to Paris.

He and his leader left to enter the building and found a large room with intricate decorations. He spotted some of Korea's flourishing fashion designers there, some foreigners were present too. He made polite conversation with the people he recognized. Many reporters or people with visiting passes interviewed him briefly.

Sehun was reminded of his visit to Paris which eventually led his thought stray to Somin. He felt bad for being this horrible to her but he didn't want to get into something both of them might regret later. One part of him didn't want to stop and continue falling for her more and more. The more rational part held him back trying to knock some sense into him. He was eager to know which side will win.

After about an hour, people milled in and out of the halls before the show started and so did he. Just as he went out for some fresh air, he was shocked to see her there. The one who'd been ruling his thoughts the past few days.

For a second, he just froze there. Somin was almost bare-faced but the way she flaunted past everyone in her yellow plaid coat and stilettos spoke of her grace and finesse. She turned many heads towards her, many approving nods. Later, he noticed she was joined by one of her band mates whose name he didn't know.

Trying to look as unbothered as he could manage, he returned to the hall.

Somin was trying hard not to yawn through the event opener's long boring speech. Jae, on the other side, sat bright-eyed. Fashion was the only thing she was in love with. As he ended with a quote by Marilyn Monroe, Somin whispered in her band mate's ear. "Woah man, that was some deep shit. It flew right over my head."

Jae chuckled, "As expected."

Many fashion brands launched their newest Fall collection leaving everyone in awe. From trendy trench coats to cozy sweaters, there was a flair of charm in every angle. When the camera showed the specials guests on a screen, she couldn't help but gasp loudly seeing Sehun.

Then she cringed, Ew, blondie, what a chicken. That's not how he left for Paris like.

"What's the matter?" Jae asked.

"Nothing." She replied too quickly.

As the event came to an end, the tea was served to allow people to mingle again. All through the show, Sehun had tried not to steal glances two rows behind him. It wasn't easy, he didn't want to get anyone suspicious. Especially the over-curious leader beside him. Although the maknae tried best not to make it obvious, but Suho caught him looking, turned back in question, and then a knowing smirked worked up his lips.

As they nibbled over donuts, a designer who usually helped them with their Music Video costumes greeted them. "Aah Suho-ssi, Sehun-ssi!" He bowed.

They bowed back. Sehun caught Somin and her band mate talking with a guy behind that man's back. Suho spoke, "Ahh annyeong haseyo, Mr. Kim! So nice to see you here!" He nudged the maknae who quickly greeted as well.

Suho was saying something, "I especially saw your collection today. The vintage theme was excellently..." When Somin's eyes met his while she was talking, the color drained from her face, and a wave of hostility passed over her features for a second. "... don't you think, Sehun-ah?"

"Huh?"

Suho smiled nervously. "I was saying that his approach as vintage designing was a classic."

"Oh, yes yes, of course, it was beautiful." Sehun glanced back at her, happy to see that she was staring at him with a confused look and when she realized she'd been caught, she just smiled at him. Sehun looked away indifferently. He knew his facial muscles would deceive him by smiling back if he didn't look elsewhere right away. God, why does she have to smile that Juliet smile of hers..?

Suho coughed uncomfortably. They were supposed to be conversing politely but Sehun wasn't paying attention. He worried it might look rude to be this distracted so he thought it better to excuse themselves from the designer. "You don't have to make it so obvious, you know."

Sehun raised an eyebrow. "Sorry?"

Suho rolled his eyes, knowing too well that the clever maknae had understood well. "Stop it. The fans notice everything."

Sehun frowned. "I don't know what you're talking about, hyung. Let's go."

The leader chuckled, saying quietly, "But I know what's going on."

Sehun ignored his comment. Right now, other things occupied his mind such as how badly his resolution was crumbling after having her right in front of him and not being able to do anything. His resolution to save himself and Somin from any trouble. Well, fuck this stupid promise. I've had enough of restraining myself. We'll go where fate takes us, the consequences can be dealt with later.

-

"So, I ran into Eunwoo the other day at the KBS building." Sooyoung's voice seemed casual.

Somin switched the hand that was holding the phone over her ear to paint her nails properly. "yeah, so?"

"He mentioned some things to me." Now it was calmly controlled. "Things I should have been told by you directly."

Somin's brows creased. What could he possibly say? "I still don't know where this is going."

Her friend huffed exasperatedly. "Somin, he said you were seeing a guy! And he was sure it was an idol. I think I know who it is. How can you hide this from me?"

Somin's eyes widened in horror, she'd almost forget she'd slipped something in front of him. Anger replaced her features. Why couldn't he keep his mouth shut!  "It's nothing like that, it was just a --"

"Don't say it was a joke. I know you don't joke about this kind of things." Sooyoung threatened. "And to top it off, he was the one you told first? Eunwoo?!"

"I know, I know, I should have mentioned it to you--"

"I'm not feeling that bad for myself as much as I feel bad for him!"

Somin stopped abruptly. What? ughh...not again. "Why would you--"

"You know very well what I mean." Sooyoung spat. "I know he likes you! we all do and the worst part is that you do too and you still have no shame in dismissing him like that."

She fell quiet for a minute, taking in the huge insult that slashed through her pride. If it hadn't been Sooyoung and somebody else, she would have made them shut up for good by now. Her chest heaved up and down quickly and she glared at her walls. Sooyoung spoke again, "And you went ahead and happily shared your latest affairs with Eunwoo. What satisfaction do you get by playing with him?"

Somin gulped. Anger shined in her eyes but she stayed quiet. Sooyoung went on, "I hate your attitude at these moments. You made him feel so small and bad after this. He doesn't deserve this treatment."

Somin's jaw slackened. Her words came out forced in a low tone. "I don't do anything to him. If he's so weak that he's affected by every single thing I do then it's not my problem!"

Sooyoung chuckled humorlessly. "Where did you dump your heart, Somin? Your decency?"

Somin pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed. I hate calling him weak but... "Look, he's just my friend and he will stay that way and Eunwoo knows that part by heart so I don't see why you--"

"If he's your friend then don't put him through this."

Honestly, what is suddenly wrong with this girl! "I'm not putting him through anything! I hardly said a word to him that day, he just jumped to conclusions himself."

"Ah, but you would never accept your mistake, would you?"

"Not at all."

"I don't care what you said to him but I hate seeing him in pain and disappointment. This has to stop!" Sooyoung added, "Stay away--"

"But he's my friend, and--" Her nostrils flared up in rage. "You know what? I'll just deal with him myself. Thanks a lot." She hung with that and dialed Eunwoo's number in a heartbeat.

She impatiently waited as anger surged through her veins. Nobody has ever insulted me like that and it's all because of him! Her mind fled with all things she was going to say to him. She was going to demand him why he couldn't let go of her, why he blurted everything out to Sooyoung like a five-year-old.
To start with, can't he even keep my secret if he's so whipped for me? I didn't want Sooyoung to find out about Sehun so soon.
And secondly, why does he have to act like a pained victim making me look like the bad guy? Did I ever promise him my affection, my feelings? Did I ever lead him on? Did I tell him to wait around for me when he clearly knows he's not my type? Did I ?!

"Hello, Somin!" His tone was light and cheery.

Somin's heart crushed. She pushed back her poisonous thoughts for a while. "Where are you?"

"Oh, I'm in Busan! We're finally recording for our debut album." She could tell he was smiling. She opened her mouth to spit out but then something crossed her mind. Is he happy because I called him? Probably the first time in six months?

"Somin?" His voice was concerned "Are you okay?"

She groaned mutely and fell to her couch. Her mind became fuzzy, her throat parched. Every shred of her existence wanted to tell him off, to scream at him not caring about their friendship anymore, to say all the things she'd planned but the sincerity in his voice stopped her. It became a struggle between her over-inflated pride and her values.

How can I say this to him? I don't want to be the one to erase his pure smile. I don't have many true friends, people who are actually concerned for me...

She licked her dry lips. "N-no.. I-just... um I was wondering how you were doing." What a lame excuse.

"Oh, I am doing great! How about you? I was so happy when you won that award, I always knew you would!" Eunwoo cheered.

Her head was hurting. She ran her fingers through her hair. "Tha-thanks. I'll just get going now."

She clicked the red button to hang up. She groaned frustratingly. The last few days had been hell. The confusion around Jae and Sungjae, the difficulty they faced during recording, Papa Hong and Cube's unfair approach, Sehun's unexplained ignorance, and now this. She got up from the couch determinedly, "I think Vibe might need a visit."

-

"23!" She shouted, trying to look over Jackson's paper secretly.

"19!"

"5"

"Five's already done, idiot." Jackson laughed. Somin checked her sheet and nodded. It was still early in the night but the party was in full swing since it was a weekend. Somin sat in a table at the corner where Jackson had introduced her to some new people. There was this foreigner guy called Eric whom she remembered as some show's host. A pretty girl called Hani was also playing. Beside her, the infamous Super Junior member Heechul sat. And two more actors whose name she didn't bother asking.

They all played 'Bingo' because that was the only game everyone knew of. Whoever lost with the worst score had to drink a strong liquor of the winner's choice all in one go. No matter how determined she was to win, Somin had already five empty bottles before her.

"16." Hani screamed the last call. "Bingo!"

Everyone on the table groaned in despair. Hani called the waitress gleefully. "Cinnamon whiskey, please!"

As their drinks arrived, Eric ran to Mia's side begging her to lend them more sheets of paper. Jackson and Eric who had scored more than her, stuck out a tongue.

She narrowed her eyes at him. "Don't be so confident. Don't you know?" She lifted her head with a flair of pride. "I am Nam Somin and I never lose." It made both of them crack up.

Somin glanced at her phone which was vibrating. Sehun had been ringing her for three days but she was intent on giving him a taste of his own medicine.

Not after he so rudely ignored me at that fashion week, no. But as they played two more rounds of Bingo and he started to call again, Jackson nudged her. "Just pick it for heaven's sake! It's irritating me!"

She grinned. "You just gave me a reason not to."

He rolled his eyes. "Who is it anyway? It better not be some manager from your agency."

"It isn't."

"Then?"

Eric laughed. "Must be some poor guy whose life she is putting in hell."

Jackson's eyes widened in surprise. "Seriously?" He wiggled his eyebrows teasingly. "It's a guy?"

Hani scoffed. "She isn't crazy, she knows it's forbidden to date. Especially being a Cube artist."

"What's it got to do with my agency?" Somin asked her.

They laughed. "They are the most brutal with dating scandals. They'll kick you out before you can even say sorry."

"But then of course." Heechul winked at her. "There are ways to date secretly for years without letting anyone get wind of it."

Hani laughed, "You would know, wouldn't you?"

A smug expression flashed on his face. "Yes. Somin dear, ask me if you need some tips."

She nodded bemusedly. Eric leaned in at her phone. "It's an unknown number." Heechul nodded quickly. "Oh clever you, that's the first tip! Never save him by his name unless your agency knows about it."

Somin retorted, "Of course. They check my phone every few months."

Hani placed a hand over her heart sympathetically. "Oh... that's terrible."

When it rang again, everybody's face was filled with a knowing smirk. Somin felt her face getting flushed so she excused herself to end this for once. "What is your problem?" was the first thing she said.

"Where are you?"

"I'm in hell for all that you care!" She snapped.

Sehun sighed over the line. "I know, I haven't been in touch lately but--"

"I'm not interested."

"Where are you?" He asked again. "Is this Vibe?"

"Yes. Don't disturb me again." She hung up.

-

As soon as he entered the smoky bar after showing his membership card, Sehun had to squint to make his way. The crowd was higher and the music was really good. He wasn't interested in drinking tonight.

It was hard to look for Somin among everyone, but once he did, it was harder to look away. And it was not only because she looked awfully good in her all-black look, a black jacket and jeans with jet black short boots. But because she was surrounded by a huge company that didn't look to non-threatening to him.

Many drunk guys playing something absurd probably because they were just screaming numbers at the top of their lungs. He texted Somin to come over which she ignored very sweetly. When he told her he was here she lifted her head in surprise but got distracted by her stupid game again.

Sehun got himself a table alone and ordered a sour vodka. He watched how she laughed heartily at almost every joke those guys cracked, how she'd frown when she lost a round. Sehun pulled a sharp breath when she stood up hugged goodbye to one of the guys beside her. When some of her friends left the bar, and the other few made their way to the counter to pay or something, Sehun took advantage of the opportunity and approached her.

"Come on, now."

Somin was startled. "What are you--" Her expression turned cold. "I'm busy."

"No, you're not. Your friends left." He bent down and took claim of her wrist, pulling her up forcefully.

She tried to fight against his grip. "Yah, leave me-- I think you know what happens to anyone who tries to touch me inappropriately ." She smirked. At least his hair is back to black, she noticed.

Sehun laughed, twisting her wrist as she withered in pain. "I know how capable those hands are of hitting me but we both know you wouldn't." He quickly left his hold when some of the people she'd been sitting with returned. Sehun quickly turned around to hide himself when he saw of his own agency's artists. Holy shit.

"Another game?" They asked.

Somin answered. "Uh.. no. I'm a little tired. You guys carry on."

She got up, almost tripping on her feet to which he turned around as he grabbed her arm again, revealing his face. Her friends stared in surprise at the sudden arrival of this stranger helping her. Heechul grinned, exchanging a look with his other mates. Somin scowled, breaking free from his grip and walked away. Sehun quickly caught up on her, making her sit at a table for two in a corner.

"You're too tipsy."

"Well of course. I lost eight games!" She rolled her eyes.

"Really? I'm surprised."

"But I'm sure you would've won." Somin taunted. "You're so good at playing around, aren't you?"

Sehun was caught off guard at the meaning of her words. It stung him. "No, I..." He shifted in his seat. "I was a little occupied." With my insecurities, my fears of being with you.

"Psh." She shook her head. "I thought you had died or something."

He raised a brow. "But you turned a deaf ear to me too, didn't you? Didn't pick my calls for days!"

"Well, you should know the consequences of ignoring me like that."

He sighed. "I know, but we're here, aren't we? All good."

Somin went on, "Though I wonder what made you come back again."

He smirked. "You should know about the consequences of your magnetic field being a bit too strong."

Her eyes shot to his face in surprise. Does he flirt with everyone? Then a crooked smile appeared. "I'll have a beer. Brown ale preferably. And you're paying, I'm totally broke."

Sehun laughed as he ordered. "You sure you can handle it?"

"Stop under-estimating me."

That brought something back in his mind. "Have you ever--" He stopped to form his words. "Don't you feel afraid of meeting me like this? I mean your company isn't too okay with this, are they?"

A dark expression covered Somin's face. "I've told myself that they have no right over my personal life."

"But that's what you've told yourself. They have every right to control you."

She shot him an annoyed look. "I don't want to think about this. Not until I can manage not being caught. I'm pushing the problems away for now." She winked at him. "Brilliant strategy of mine, isn't it?"

Sehun shook his head with a hint of a smile. "You just debuted." He looked at his lap. "What's the rule in your agency? Do they allow dating after three to four years?"

"I never asked them." She answered. "Because I know the answer will not be what I want to hear."

Sehun decided to drop the topic. It was making him uncomfortable talking about dating with her when they were clearly nowhere. He just wanted to know her perspective about something that's been bugging him but Somin was obviously not bothered.

"We're having a comeback." She stretched her limbs with a very unattractive groan. "Oh it's killing me Sehun, I'm telling you."

He laughed, propping his face in his chin resting on the table. "Why?"

"They suddenly want us to do a cute concept and I'm hating every bit of it. And me being the visual has to smile shyly and pout all the time. The title track is horribly girlish and I'm close to tearing my hair off." Her eyes were crinkled in disgust.

"Bear with it." He advised. "SM made us do some pretty embarrassing concepts too. These agencies love to do that once in a while. What's the album's name?"

Somin took a sip of her beverage. "It's called 'Sugar'. The title track is called 'Cherry on Top'." She whimpered. "Gosh, can you believe me in a short pink dress with hearts dangling from it and half blonde hair? I'm doomed."

When Sehun tried to imagine, his ears turned red so he did not answer her question. He never thought it was possible to look so hot and so adorable at the same time, Somin showed him anything was possible when it came to her. "You'll look like someone who walked straight out of Barbie."

"That's the point." She chuckled. "Anyways, what is going on your end?"

They talked more over drinks. He told her all about his schedules, his upcoming winter album. It felt light telling Somin about the difficulty they all faced with recording with lesser members because they weren't used to it yet. He told her more about his members, how all of them were so special to him and that he'd do anything for them.

"That guy from your group.." Her brows furrowed in concentration. "Baekhyun? I heard that he broke up."

Sehun pursed his lips. "It's just for show. They're still dating."

She breathed in relief, holding her hand over her chest. "Thank god! I really like Taeyeon unnie."

Taeyeon's words echoed in Somin's mind out of nowhere. 'But I never knew it will all backfire on me like this. That I will have to pay for it so tormentingly. That it would get in the way of me being with someone I've loved. Never get into dating, I'd advise you.'

It made her feel lost. He asked, "What are you thinking?"

Somin shook her head. "Seriously, I don't understand how you still claim to love these fans when they can't be happy with you." Her face held a confused look.

Sehun looked away. "At times like these, I find it difficult to love them too but... it's what we have to do."

Somin frowned. "Well, I wouldn't. If my fans don't support me for anything I do, I'm disowning them."

That made him laugh. "Oh Somin, you're so naive. You don't know how the world works."

She scoffed with challenging certainty. "Of course, I know. I've seen more than people my age ever have."

Holding her gaze, Sehun whispered. "Really?"

Something in his gleaming eyes tugged at her, yanked her. Her eyes traveled to his perfectly aligned and sharp features. I've never seen a guy so dazzling. She looked at his broad and lean shoulders, the poking collar bone from his grey tee-shirt, how the sleeves were fitted from him built up biceps, his chest puffed up. Something tickled in her stomach and she quickly looked away. Regaining her lost composure, she smirked "You think you know me?"

"I think I'd like to." He leaned in and she hated him for that. Having a close up of his face was a blessing and a curse simultaneously.

To end the topic and the hotness of her cheeks, Somin diverted to telling him about her brother and his job. When she finished, Sehun had a strangely admiring look on his face. "That's so... selfless of you, Somin. Though I don't expect you to be so-- why are you looking at me like that?"

She held an odd look, like he'd just insulted her. "Don't call me that again. Selfless..." She spaced out. "If you stick around me for a little more time, you'll soon find out that I'm a very selfish person."

"I don't believe that." He scoffed.

"You should." She bit her lip. "I hate people who're so kind and gracious and selfless. Who go on suffering everything just because they hope it will return to them someday. Nobody is oing to come and give them an award for it." Her brows joined. "It's fucking nonsense."

Sehun remained silent. Her bitter side is one I am not familiar with yet. "If you need to survive in this world, you should just think about yourself, that's the only way. If somebody is nice it only means they're interested in what you can give them. Money, pleasure, anything. Of course, there can be some exceptions like your loved ones but there's no point otherwise."

Does this have something to do with the secrets she has buried in deep that she's so keen on hiding from me? "I'm not selfless at all." The broken look in her face urged him to embrace her but Sehun pushed back his wishes.

He decided to give her the space she needed to return back to her old self. The sarcastic one, the charming Somin. Some on-comers accidentally bumped into his chair causing his fingers to brush against hers on the table. She met his eyes at the burning sensation. Somin couldn't interpret his eyes, there were so many colorful lights flickering on his eyeballs.

When their hands brushed again, Sehun went ahead and laced his fingers with her. Somin's eyes dropped at their intertwined hands. When she looked back, she saw only warmth in his face. Quietly, she muttered. "Don't disappear like that again. So suddenly. Without an explanation."

Sehun was about to comment something quirky; like 'why, does it bother you? did you miss me?' but he realized the seriousness of the situation. His thumb rubbed against her skin. "I wouldn't, I'm sorry."

It was the first promise he'd made to her. The first promise he was going to break.

Somin smiled lightly. When they got up to make their to the counter, Somin purposely untangled their hands. As he paid the bill, Mia smirked at her appreciatively. She saw a few nosy eyes staring at them. When they exited the bar, they pulled there face masks over.

"I bet they're all talking about us now," Sehun remarked.

Us. She liked that word. She savored the way Sehun said us. So thrilling, so conspiratorial it sounded coming from him. Like it rolled over his lips so casually, naturally--us. It acknowledged their connection, crystallized it.

"I'll drop you to your dorm?" he asked, taking out his car keys.

She nodded hesitantly. "Yes but not to my dorm. My apartment."

He quickly looked around for anyone but thankfully Vibe provided good security in the near radius of the bar so that celebrities could walk in and out without being noticed. "Sure."

As he drove smoothly over the silent road, Somin said, "I tricked my manager so badly today! I told her I had a killing head ache because of the heat and she believed me. So she let me stay at my place for the night because my room at the dorm doesn't even have an air conditioner."

Sehun laughed heartily. She was full of surprises. And lies.

"But I think I am going to have one tomorrow with all the drinking." Somin sighed. As he pulled the brakes to a halt, she commented in surprise, looking out the pitch-black window panes. "Is it here already? So...soon?"

He nodded solemnly, "I had wished your apartment complex would be somewhere far, far away."

Somin smiled at him. "Haha, I don't, my hangover is starting to kick."

Though she didn't ask him to, Sehun still saw her off till they reached the apartment's main lobby. He just hoped she wouldn't think he was taking advantage of her just because she was drunk. When she turned around at him at the base of the stairs, her mind went blank. "When can I see you again?" He asked. The shadows on his face made him look bewitchingly handsome. He towered over her and she could the feel the heat his body emitted. It was spellbinding.

Sehun gazed in her eyes quietly for a minute. They were such an odd shape. There was a haze in them that kept pulling him in. He was so focused on figuring out her allure that he didn't notice how much closer they'd gotten. His lips quirked up and his gaze was drawn down. Her lips were the perfect mix of full and firm.

A little closer and I could kiss her. A taste.
Would one taste be enough?

But before he could ponder upon that, Somin quickly turned her head away, pushing him aside slightly. The bubble was burst and he stood back. "See you soon."

As Sehun strode back to the parking lot, he was still mesmerized by the way she pulled him in and then pushed away. But he didn't mind it because her games was what tempted him. The enticing smiles and engaging remarks. He started smiling like a fool when his mind traveled over the close up of Somin's face again.

She was closer this time, but not close enough.

Yes, you have finally finished reading this extremely long chapter! and no, I'm not ashamed of pulling it so long :D

Also I want to clear that everything I write does have some speck of reality in it. All information about Cube Entertainment is mostly true, their artists and everything else too. I try to search a lot before writing anything so that I don't get drifted away from the facts but forgive me if I miss out anything.

Also, don't forget to give me your reviews of this chapter, especially the progress. It was mostly a filler chapter and I promise something exciting in the next! I get insecure a lot regarding my book but I'll keep going on :)

First of all, I don't want to make Sungjae look like a bad guy, I love him with all my heart especially after his and Joy's couple.

Some of you wanted to see again how Aurora's maknae Rio looks like so here you go, anything for my readers! Ariya might be up next.
