Adelina sat criss cross on the bed in the hotel she was currently staying at. Deciding to catch up with Charlie and a few of the guests she had met, she had pushed her flight back a few more days so that she could say a little longer. She hadn't heard from Bella since her wedding night which relieved Adelina more than it probably should have.
Her wedding night was still a mystery to Adelina. Having no clue who the guy was but still having that weird connection with him confused her. She knew that if Bella and her talked, he was sure to come up in the conversation and she wasn't sure she wanted to talk about him yet.
The phone beside her rang, snapping Adelina out of her thoughts. Glancing over, she noticed that it was Charlie's name on the screen. Picking it up, she held the phone to her ear. "Hey, Charlie."
"Adi. What are you doing right now?" He asked.
"Sitting in my hotel room. Why?"
She could hear him scoff over the phone. "Your life seems more boring than mine right now. I'm about to go over to Sue's for dinner and was wondering if you would like to join me."
"Sure!" She cheerfully replied, relieved to have an excuse to leave the room. "Let me get ready and I'll be over in about ten."
Rushing to get ready, Adelina scurried around the room. Picking up a random shirt along with a pair of jeans, she quickly threw them on before grabbing her keys, as well as the room key, and headed out the door to the Swan residence.
She met Charlie right as he was exiting his front door. Giving the younger girl a wave, he motioned over to his cruiser. "I'll give you a ride."
The two made easy conversation on the way there, and in what seemed to be a matter of minutes they were there. She raised herself out of the car and surveyed the house. It was cute, she thought, observing the cozy looking house with the small front porch.
Walking in sync to the door, Charlie gently knocked before opening the door, letting the pair in. He was met by Sue cooking up a storm in the kitchen. She glanced over her shoulder and threw the pair a smile. "I'm almost done here," she said, mixing the food in the boiling pot. "Seth is in his room, but I think Leah is out and about."
"She's your daughter, right?" Adelina asked, wanting to make sure she had everything sorted correctly. Everybody seemed to be related to somebody in the small town of Forks, and in the even smaller reservation of La Push. She didn't want to mix things up.
"My oldest," Sue confirmed. Peering down the hallway, she shook her head at her son's tardiness. "Seth! Get in here, food's almost ready." Immediately, Adelina heard him bounding down the halls.
Seth smiled at his mother, then glanced at Charlie with the same look of happiness. When he got the Adelina, however, his eyes widened in surprise. "I - What are you still doing here?"
"Seth!" Sue scolded.
"What? I thought she'd left," Seth defended. Turning back towards the young adult, he gave her a small smile. "It is nice to still see you, though. I thought you had left without a goodbye."
She laughed. "Leave Forks without a goodbye from you? Never."
Sue smiled at the pair. "Help me carry this over, Seth. It's time to eat."
The four of them sat down at the small table. Seth dug in, earning another scolding from Sue. He tried to defend himself with a mouth full of food, making the other three grimace but chuckle at the young boy's antics.
It was right when they had finished eating that the door slammed shut, revealing a girl that looked to be about Adelina's age. She looked at the four of them sitting down in confusion, with her eyes lingering on the her before she frowned and stomped down the hallway, presumably to her room. Adelina felt her own face shift in confusion. Why did it seem like the girl already held a grudge against her.
"Ignore her," Seth whispered. "Leah hates everybody." Sue sighed but didn't try to defend her only daughter. Sitting in silence for a moment, Charlie finally broke the tension. "Well, Adi and I better be going. I have to make one more stop before heading back to the station to finish some paperwork."
Sue walked the two out, making Charlie promise to come by again before too long. She smiled up at Adelina. "It was nice to meet you, dear. Hopefully I can see you again soon."
"You as well," she simply responded, following Charlie to the police car. As she got in, she turned to him. "Where else do we have to go."
"I just have to make a quick visit to an old friend. It will just be a second," he promised. Starting the car up and backing his way onto the road, they arrived at the location not even five minutes later. "You can come in if you want, or stay in the car. It's up to you."
"I'll just stay with you, if you don't mind."
Nodding, Charlie walked towards the small house's ramp with Adelina right on his heels. He didn't even bother knocking on the door, instead opting for opening the door. Looking around, she spotted an older man - somewhere around Charlie's age - sitting in front of a small television set on a football game. "Billy," Charlie smiled.
The man, Billy, chuckled as he spotted him. He wheeled his way over to his old friend, extending his hand. "Charlie." He then glanced at her, his own expression shifting for a second before settling back to his natural friendly appearance. "Adelina, right? You were at Bella's wedding."
"I remember you," she said. "You were with Seth."
He smiled, nodding his head. "Speaking of Bella," he said, once again turning to Charlie. "Have you heard anything?"
Charlie's expression faltered slightly. "Nothing. I get it, but it would be nice to get a phone call."
Billy simply nodded. "Well, come on. It's in the back." He smiled at Adelina. "Make yourself comfortable. This will just take a second."
She watched as the two men both walked and wheeled down the hall. Sighing, she turned and noticed an abundance of framed photographs hanging on the wall. Stepping closer, she squinted as she observed them more carefully.
She recognized Billy, even though he looked a lot younger and was without the wheelchair. Shifting her eyes slightly to the right, she noticed a beautiful woman standing beside him. The pair were smiling at each other as if they didn't even notice the camera going off.
Glancing at the next one, her breath caught as her eyes landed an a certain boy. She was just about to step even closer to the photo when the slamming of the door made her jump. Whirling around, she noticed a taller boy standing there, looking at her in confusion. "Who are you," he asked.
"Who are you?" She repeated, seeming just as confused.
"I asked first," he replied.
Lifting an eyebrow, she glared at him for a second before slumping her shoulder slightly in defeat. "Adelina. I'm here with Charlie."
His face changed into one of both recognition and annoyance. "You're the one Seth won't shut up about."
"I never got your name?" She asked, choosing to ignore his statement about Seth.
"Paul," he introduced. Looking around as if he just remembered why he got here, he glanced back towards her. "Um, I just had to check on something really quick." Darting away without a second glance, he followed the path that the two older men had just taken.
Still a bit apprehensive, she slowly crossed her arms over her chest and made her way over to the living room. She sat on the worn out couch and settled her eyes on the game in front of her. Right as she was starting to get into it, she registered the sound of footsteps coming towards her, accompanied by two voices as well. Quickly standing up, she tilted her head to see who the voices belonged to.
She sighed when Charlie emerged, Billy shortly behind him. "Thanks, Billy," he said, laying a hand on his friend's shoulder. "This part should do the trick."
"Don't thank me, thank Jacob," Billy corrected. "He was up all night working on that for you." As soon as the words were out of his mouth, two more voices were heard coming from the hallway. "Speak of the devil."
Paul came into view first, shooting a quick smirk in Adelina's direction before looking at Billy. "We have to go. I'll bring him back soon. At his words, Billy shot a glance at Adelina. His mouth opened, but snapped shut as another figure came into view.
Adelina's breath stuttered as she saw him. The same one that had been at Bella's wedding that night. He looked over at Billy, then Paul, slowly moving towards Charlie, and finally moving even slower towards Adelina. He stared at her as if he couldn't believe she was here.
Her own eyes were quickly cast downwards, both to avoid the gaze of the mystery boy and the trio surrounding him. Taking a little peek, she shot her eyes back down at the tension. Paul was looking at her in disbelief, as was Billy, while Charlie just looked as confused as she did.
Once again, Charlie broke the awkward silence suffocating the room. "Thanks for the piece, Jacob. The mower should be running smoothly again once I put it back in."
Jacob.
The said boy's eyes were wide as he finally looked away from Adelina to Charlie. "Yeah," he answered thickly. "Any time."
"Uh, Charlie?" Adelina spoke up. "Do you mind if we could be on our way. I still have to pack."
At her words, Charlie shook his head. "I thought you had an open ticket?"
"I have to get back to work. I told them I'd only be gone for a week, and I don't want to push it by asking for even more than I already have."
Truth be told, Adelina's work told her to take as long as she would need. She had worked for them since Junior year of high school, and with being the dedicated worker that she was, had hardly asked for any time off. She just wanted to get out of this room, and out of this town. She wanted to get away from him as she possibly could.
"Uh, yeah," Charlie nodded. Looking at Billy, placed his hand on his shoulder for the second time and squeezed gently. "I'll be in touch."
Adelina followed the two of them towards the front door. She have one last, short smile towards Paul. "Nice to meet you," she lowly muttered. Giving Jacob one last nod of the head, she sucked in a breath and walked out the door and into the cold air. She could feel his heated gaze on her back but chose to ignore it, instead focusing on trying to trip while moving towards the door.
The pair rode back to Charlie's house in silence, although this one wasn't nearly as awkward as the one at Billy's place. As soon as he parked the car on the side of the street she climbed out and paced herself towards her own car, anxious to go back to her room.
"Adi?" Charlie hesitantly asked. "Can I ask you... Can you do me a favor?"
"Anything," Adelina nodded, wanted to leave as soon as she could.
He sighed, looking at the house before turning his gaze back on her. "It's just been a while since I've had the house to myself, and even though I'm not really in it, things are still different for me. Could you please stay? Just until Bella gets back at least? It shouldn't be too much longer."
She stared at him, internally debating his proposition. Letting out a puff of air, she nodded. "Just - Just let me call my work, okay? I'm sure they'll be fine with me missing another week or two, but lemme check."
Sure enough, the local pizza shop was more than happy to let her off for another solid two weeks, with her owner knowing how important Bella was to her. She drove back towards the hotel and packed. Only this time, instead of heading to the nearest airport to head back home, she turned the opposite way toward's the Swan house.
What had she gotten herself into?
It is so freaking weird to write about Paul and not have him connected to Skylar in some way, which is apart of my other series if yall didn't know. I like the way this chapter came out, and we're starting to get a flow in the story so updates should come more frequently now. As always, hoped you enjoyed, and don't forget to vote and comment!
