Chapter 9 The Wall

"Glad you can make it." Eleanor said as she led me towards a small jet. I pulled the hood of my jumper more securely around my head; it was the oldest tactic in the book to hide my face, but it's the most viable one because I couldn't exactly run around with a mask on my face in 32 degrees heat.

"Does anyone know that you are coming today?" Eleanor asked and I shook my head. I had made up an excuse about a video call with Nirmal, and then another one with the UGE and everyone seemed to buy it. With the exception of possibly Gerald, but I couldn't imagine anyone actually going to verify with Nirmal, not even him. And even then I doubted he would suspect what I was really up to.

"Where are we going?" I asked; they had told me very little of the plan thus far, especially since it must all be different now. It wasn't because they didn't trust me, but words have a way of getting out and it's safer to leave things face to face in a secure environment.

"We will discuss everything on the plane." Eleanor said, looking around carefully. There were only a few ground staffs moving equipment around; not that there were usually a lot of traffic on airfields anyway. Flying was highly dangerous and I wondered where they got the jet from and more importantly, how they got authorization. We would also be easily tracked.

"Won't people find out about this?" I asked, following Eleanor up a small flight of stairs and entered the cabin. We had bypassed securities so far, but there bounds to be someone who noticed us. The plane was empty at the moment except for a lone crew, who nodded at Eleanor before leading us to the back of the plane.

"We are hitching a ride." Eleanor's smiled grew boarder as she gestured for me to enter into a crew only area. It was actually a small, enclosed room stacked with supplies that was just large enough for two to three people to sit down. "This flight is going for a day return to Georgia Citybase."

Georgia. My mind tried to place that Citybase somewhere, but it was drawing up blank. I hoped it wasn't too far away. Settling in as much as I could on top of a cardboard box, I was glad to see Eleanor taking a seat too.

"Would Tristan be coming?" I asked and she shook her head, then a playful smile appeared on her face.

"Kyle would be here. This is the TV crew's plane to Georgia instead for filming. It appears that the idea of capturing the wall-less countryside outside of Pax's city limits has been ruled as too boring. So now they are running a piece on the Original Wall structures still in used." Eleanor explained and I nodded. I have learned from my school in London Citybase that some of the smaller, poorer Citybase had never upgraded their Walls since the time it was built. It would be quite amazing to see the 260 years old structure first hand as well.

"Oh good, the plan would work better that way." My mind suddenly clicked and my eyes lit up. Eleanor nodded eagerly and pulled out some papers from her briefcase – a map and some photos. "But we need to time this right; otherwise it might turn into a disaster."

We spent the rest of the flight talking over the details, my hearts fluttering as the real passengers boarded the plane and their boisterous laughter and conversations carrying through. The crew, for the most part, left us undisturbed, seemingly completely at ease with us hiding out in this small room that made me wonder if incidents like this were a common occurrence, or the fact that the existence of this room was redundant.

"Are you ready?" Eleanor asked, easing herself up from our cramped position as one of the crew opened the door and gestured for us to come out. I was now dressed in their uniform to blend in, and Eleanor would be staying on the plane waiting for me to return. I was to change back into my hoodies and jeans combo when as soon as possible.

"Yes." I answered, taking in a deep breath and smoothed my uniform. Joining the queue of the real crew exiting the plane, I tried my best to push my nerves away and pretended that I did this every day.

A wave of cool air hit me as I descended and I shivered a little; the weather here was a fair notch colder and drier than the Pax, which meant that at least I won't look out of place in a hoodie. I picked up my pace and entered the one-story concrete terminal under an exit that marked crew-only.

Doing a careful scan of the area with my mind, I skirted around the security cameras and made my way towards an emergency exit that would take me straight out to the arrivals lounge. While no one paid me any attention before, Eleanor warned me that there would be security cameras and document checks inside. Any new faces would be immediately recognised and I needed to exit without being detected at the precise time she got someone to disconnect the security lock system for 30 seconds.

Slipping my hoodie on over the uniform, I kicked off the court heels and pulled on my trainers, keeping my eyes on the rotating security camera that would be on me in just ten seconds. The red skirt might look a bit weird, but at least now no one would think that it was part of the uniform. Trying the door with my mind, I heard the telltale ding, made sure that the security cameras were pointing the wrong way and that the other side of the door was cleared and slipped through.

I caught a glimpse of the departing TV crew getting on two sleek black vans, and I edged towards the exit through the more abundant camera blind spots and waited until they were pulling out of the lot before making a dash to the door that would lead me to the back-end of the airport, where it's free of security cameras. My heart was racing a little from the all the spy-like activity and I could feel the adrenaline pumping through me.

Closing the door, I sighed with relief at successfully evading the securities. Putting the bag down, I scanned the room to confirm that there were indeed nobody around before I change back into my jeans as well. Digging out the map and a compass that Eleanor had brought along for me as well, I managed to orientate myself and find the path to the filming location.

Since the airport was situated on the outskirts of the Citybase, I only have to walk about 5 km to the filming location. Hopefully the TV crew would be all set up by then, and the only other thing I needed to worry about was how to get out if they were filming the exterior section.

Making sure everything was secured in the bag I swung it over my shoulder and headed for the exit, careful that I wouldn't make any loud noises and making sure that there was absolutely no one around who can see me.

Following the map's direction, I broke into a brisk walk and kept my face down. I glanced at my surrounding through my peripheral visions and saw rows after rows of rundown buildings. This was definitely not the favoured part of town.

To my great surprise, I had no trouble at all navigating through the streets. I was relieved to see that there were a lot of people who were dressed like me so I instantly felt better about my disguise (or lack thereof).

As I begun to approach the filming location, I cautiously extended my mind to pinpoint where they were. After I was completely sure that there was no other POE around, I began to expand my mind out ever further, locating them right in front of the wall about 1 km away from me.

Scouting out a good, strategic location where a small group of people had gathered to watch the shooting, I edged forward carefully and craned my neck out to get a good visual on them. While I get a lot of information from mind sensing, seeing things with my eyes is always better. Besides, I needed to identify the exact section of the Wall that would be crucial to our plan.

I spotted Kyle right away; the fashionista was all dolled up in a fur-lined green parka and combat boots, clutching a cup of steaming coffee like he had never been faced with the cold before. A dozen other crew members were scattered around, doing a final check on equipment and I knew I was early. Argh.

Scanning the Wall behind, I finally found the match to the photo Eleanor showed me a few hundred meters further down. This won't do.

Biting my lips, I tried to think of something I could do that could get them to move on down to where I needed them, and as the crew mounted the huge cameras on wheels and Kyle gesturing towards the right direction, I knew that he was in on this.

For someone who was so skeptical about my performance, he seemed awfully at ease to put his life in my hand.

Now that this was taken care of, I started to go all the way around the block so I could appear to be coming up from the other direction. It was strange that they didn't set up a clearing zone for filming, but for most part people seemed to be happy just watching from a distance. Even those who were walking by barely stop to stare.

Keeping tabs on them, I jogged to the other side, brushing past a few people who were drawn to the filming by all the glaring bright lights and noises. I was surprised to see a girl who was dressed almost identical to me, but figured that would be a good advantage later.

With my heart pounding against my chest, I put myself into position just out of sight of the wall around the corner of a meandering street. Closing my eyes, I made sure I was a hundred percent focused on Kyle and his moving entourage as they close in.

Dividing a small section of my mind towards the Wall, I let my mind wandered through every nooks and crannies, looking for the weakness. It was a deep gash midway up the Wall that was never fixed even though it was considered a structure damaged. Feeling around it, I could tell that it still got a few years left of life in it. As the other team got closer and closer, I began to make my way out of my hiding place, strolling towards the Wall not too far behind an older gentleman with a briefcase.

I could sense Kyle's glance flickering towards me and someone, he recognised me and nodded his head to the Wall. Wasting no time, I suppressed the grimace forming on my face and the rushing guilt and tugged at the gash.

With a rumbling sound, the Wall gave way.

Screams started coming from the small crowd watching and with all my might, I pushed most of the debris outward leaving only a few pieces collapsing inward. The crew stood frozen in fear, and the camera man looked up, pointing his equipment skyward, but no one made any attempt to move.

Thankful for the height of the Wall, I dashed forward and pushed the gentleman out of harm's way, mentally tugging the hood around my face tighter at the same time. Shooting my hands up, I deflected some of the medium size debris that were raining towards the crowd and the gasps had the camera man turning my way.

Flicking my arm again, I sent one of the three large pieces out of the gap that was created by collapsing the Wall and this snapped everyone into action. The filming crew begun to retreat with the camera still training on me, but Kyle, whether playing his part or not remain rooted in place.

Deflecting another boulder-sized chuck of concrete, I put my free hand on my temple to resist the onslaught of a headache as I also made sure the crowd was safe from any fly offs. But now the biggest debris was closing onto Kyle's head and the crew was screaming for him to run while the crowd gasped and watched on.

Squeezing my eyes shut, I mustered all the strength I have left and gave that piece a mighty shove just in time for it to miss Kyle by the head and landing meters away from me. Exhausted from the excessive use of my power in the last hour, I made sure the attention was on Kyle before making a run for it.

"Hey, wait!" Someone shouted behind me, but I paid them no attention, making a run for the empty streets ahead of me. As soon as I was out of sight, I started to take my hoodie off as I ran and pulled on the horrific red jacket of the uniform. Snapping my hair into a pony tail, I slowed down and headed towards the street that led to the city center.

Sensing a group of people closing in, I threw the bag into the nearest rubbish bin, suspending it in the middle so that it wouldn't come into contact with anything. Turning around, I pretended I was approaching towards the Wall and not away from it.

A man whom I recognised from the crowd came up to me and spoke in a language that I couldn't understood. But I could see an image of myself in his mind and I nodded, pointing in the direction that I supposedly came from and he took off again. A few people behind us saw our exchange, including a guy who I saw holding the mic, and ran along with him, and I pretended to be shocked and stare after them.

When I was sure no one else was coming, I retrieved my bag and headed back towards the airport with a smile on my face.

-----------------------------------------

A lot more action than I have ever written I believe :) do you guys like it?

I think this is also Gail's first solo mission, and she handled it quite well. I would be s***ing my pants.

Anyway - I didn't quite managed NaNoWriMo as I have hoped, but I am coping fairly okay with this weekly update.

Do comment and vote - let me know what you think of this!
