Chapter 19 / Sympathy

My eyes search the graveyard as I try to find Rebekah, Elijah and Klaus. I study the graveyard taking my time to listen and follow any tracks that I might find on the dirt floor. Everything that's happen today I just want to put it into the past, forget why I came here in the first place. I should have never came after the Mikaelson,  it was stupid of me to think that I would get my revenge on Klaus.

I look up at the sky, it's going to be dark very soon and if I don't hurry, Klaus might kill Rebekah. I quicken my pace as I continue to search for the three originals. I thought my family was screwed up, but the Mikaelson... they take the cake. After fifteen minutes of searching the sky turns black. I sigh stopping in my tracks to take a breather. A slight chill picks up, I'm glade I decide to grab my jacket.

"Get away from her!" I hear Klaus's voice echo through the graveyard. "She's mine."

I dash off to were it's coming from. After a minute or two I finally find them. Rebekah and Elijah glance at me their eyes telling me what are you doing here?

I turn to face Klaus, he wears a sly smirk as I stare him down. If he wants Rebekah he's going to have to go through me to get her... and I'm not going down that easy. Klaus lets out a chuckle before pointing the white ash stake in his hand at us.

"I had a feeling you come." Klaus whispers, "You always have to play the hero don't you Elias."

I make clench my jaw tight, he's right I'll always play the hero, it's what I do best. That's what we were taught to do. It's the only thing I know how to do. I step in front of Rebekah letting Klaus know that I'm not giving him the chance to hurt her, even if it gets me killed. It I die, at least I know I died for a good cause.

"Elias," Rebekah whispers sadly, "go."

"I'm not leaving you." I firmly reply. "This is my fight as well."

"This has nothing to do with you." Rebekah says grabbing onto my shoulder.

"This has everything to do with me." I look over my shoulder, my eyes darting towards her.

"Elijah take her away from here. Make sure you get as far away as you can." I continue, "There's no way out at the moment. This is probably going to last tell morning."

Elijah nods throws me Papa Tunde's blade before taking Rebekah out of our sight in a flash. I glare out Klaus my eyes and body burning with rage as Klaus takes a step towards me. I take a couple steps back from Klaus my eyes never leaving his when I do. I carefully watch his steps, I hold the blade in steady in my left hand ready to attack if he comes my way.

"Your not touching her." I growl under neath my breath.

Klaus narrows his eyes at me, like his challenging me. I have waited for this moment for what feels like a lifetime. It's been a lifetime and here's my chance to take my revenge.

"Don't be such a fool." Klaus barks his eyes darkening with hatred. "She stabbed me in the back by summing Mikael."

I let out a light chuckle. "So have you. I mean many of times I was told by your siblings. Two that are dead by the way."

I flash Klaus a smile before running after Elijah and Rebekah. After a couple of hours of keeping Rebekah safe this is where we stand. In the middle of the cemetery, still protecting Rebekah. The white oak ash stake in Elijah's hand the dangerous blade in mine. This could go anyway, but I hope it goes ours.

"Klaus, Rebekah was going to kill our father herself." Elijah tells, "But I stopped her, I was going to do it myself."

Klaus stares at Elijah trying to decide if he believes him, "what is this? Some melodramatic fiction designed garner my sympathy? "

I listen closely to them my mind wandering to what it was like for Klaus back then. I never met their father but from what I've seen from Klaus and what I've been told he seems like an ass. And in this very moment... I kinda feel sympathy for Klaus. No wonder why he is the way he is. It's because of his past that's made him so paranoid and bitter.

"It's the truth." Elijah adds trying to get Klaus to believe him. "I was there. I often wish I could relive the past so I could complete the task myself."

"Why are you telling me this now?"Klaus whispers sadly.

Klaus turns away from us his back facing us. I stand and watch quietly not wanting to interrupt their family bonding. If you can call it that.

"Niklaus sometimes our sister acts without thinking , she's short of temper, she's quick to fall in love..." Elijah pauses, "but she loves you. So yes she summoned our father but it was a mistake... but I'm not entirely sure I blame her."

As Elijah speaks his last words it finally cause Klaus to turn back around and face us. His eyes dart up to meet our gaze. His face is hard and bitter.

"I can." Klaus coldly whispers.

Klaus uses his vampire speed to speed away but Elijah and I are to quick to follow him. I grip the blade in my hand ready to use it if necessary.

"Niklaus, so help me-"

"Are you really going to stand against me? And not with that pathetic blade you just have to pull it out someday. And then I hate you as I do her." I roll my eyes at Klaus comment. "If you want to protect Rebekah your going to have the use the white oak stake."

"If we have to, so be it." I shooting daggers at Klaus with my eyes.

"You want revenge fine. But before you have it I will look you in the eye and tell you why it was your cruelty and your spite, that lead us to this." Rebekah's voice filling the air as she finally comes out from hiding.

"Will go on then." Klaus whispers waving his hand in the air. "Speak your peace, and I will grant you the punishment you deserve. Even if I have to go through Elijah and Elias to do so."

Elijah and I stare at each other before looking at Klaus. I narrow my eyes at him. After a couple of minutes we move to another area. Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah continue to talk as I continue to listen to them. Klaus claiming how he was protecting her from all the poor choice she made with men. Klaus did everything he has done for love. After Rebekah tells Klaus the truth the fight is on and Klaus goes for Rebekah but Elijah and I block him from doing so.

Elijah and I roll up off the ground holding each of the weapons in our hands. Elijah throws the blade to his left and I watch it go off into the corner where Rebekah has disappeared to. This isn't good. I hand Elijah the blade, praying that he doesn't do anything stupid with it. After a couple of seconds Klaus runs at Elijah and stabs him with the blade before I can do anything about it. Klaus drops Elijah onto the floor before I slowly walk over to Rebekah who is now holding the stake.

Klaus turns around slowly as Rebekah holds up the white oak stake. Klaus eyes filling with fear as Rebekah holds it in her hand.

"So I decide who lives and who dies." I smile at her words, that's the Rebekah I remember.

I watch Elijah helplessly, I mean I could go over and remove it from his chest but then that leaves open to Klaus, and who knows what he will pull. Before I can move Klaus comes behind me and snaps my neck like it's nothing this isn't going to be good.

I wake up a couple of hours later to Rebekah, she smiles at me as I shift in the seat. I look around to see that we're in her car and it's completely dark outside. My gaze shifts to the exit sign of New Orleans and I smile to myself.

"So," Rebekah speaks up, "Do you still want to run off with me?"

"Of course I do. Who's going to protect you getting your heartbroken." I slightly tease as I seat up in the passenger seat.

"So are you going to be the one breaking my heart?"

"No," I whisper, "I'm going to give you what I promised you centuries ago."

"Klaus and I made up... everything in the clear."

"So he set you free?" I reach over to grab her hand.

"He did." I smile again to myself as she answers my question.

"Here's to a new life." Rebekah whispers.

"Lead the way." I whisper back my eyes watching as everything of New Orleans drifts off into the distance. "To a new life."
