Review for Maddy/Sprinkles Short Story
*Since I can't get a good pic of the cover for this story I am pasting the link to the story: https://www.wattpad.com/story/95605538-short-stories-and-one-shots
NOTE: Since this is a review of a finished work there will probably be some spoilers that make it in here. If you hate such things, I would suggest you read the overview here and then go straight to the story.
You've been warned.
<> Overview <>
Bring the tissues. Have therapist on speed-dial. Wrap yourself in a blanket. Lock your feels away.
This "What If" centers around what might have happened if Aragorn had taken the Ring from Frodo at Amon Hen. It's dark, it's scary, and it's amazingly traumatizing. Let's do it *grabs snuggy*
<> Plot <>
Now, this being fundamentally a three-part story it is not heavily laden with a plot. Like I mentioned in the overview, this story is dark, twisted, and will probably haunt your waking dreams forever.
*shivers* Moving on.
It centers around Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Arwen after Aragorn has taken the Ring and used it to overthrow Sauron. But as it does with all things, the Ring has plans of its own for Aragorn. After finding Legolas in Arwen's bedroom (so scandalous!), He gets pretty upset and decides to "fix" Legolas and teach him a lesson. What takes place next is so disturbing your insides will curl up into the fetal position and beg you to stop reading...but you won't be able too; you're too far gone at that point.
Through the story, you feel the mounting tension, evil, and cruelty you come to hate Evilgorn (that's his new name), and you find yourself willing to pay whatever currency there is in Middle-Earth to put a bounty on his head.
<> Characters and Growth <>
The main characters that come into play in this story are Evilgorn and Legolas. Gimli and Arwen are there, but they are on the sidelines watching it utter horror at what is transpiring.
It is interesting watching Evilgorn in a couple of flashbacks justify keeping the Ring to protect his friends. In a similar way to Boromir, who wanted to protect his people, Evilgorn uses an identical logic.
This protectiveness eventually leads to a mounting sense of paranoia, which in turn is directed towards anyone who questions him about pretty much anything. Legolas being first and foremost among them.
Evilgorn becomes more sadistic and cruel in his attempts to break Legolas; Legolas tries to hold on to the light before it's snuffed out entirely.
<> Overall Story <>
I find this story amazing because it goes where few writers will go. It is unique and stands out among the plethora of fanfics out there on Wattpad.
I enjoyed the darkness of the story because it wasn't without purpose. It wasn't, "and then Evilgorn killed everyone just because he's Evilgorn." It looked at Evilgorn's increasing lack of humanity as he fell under the Ring's influence.
It says something about a story when people cannot stop reading it in spite of the emotional trauma they are experiencing while doing so (honestly, I was laughing reading the comments during the story, which only added to my enjoyment of it. I know, I'm horrible.).
I do not recommend reading before bed due to the need of seeking out therapy afterward, and most are not open late at night. You have been warned.
If you want angst, the whole angst, and nothing but the angst, this story is for you!
NOTE:
Don't make direct eye contact with Sprinkles. She, like Sauron, can see into your mind and torment you with feels and find out the things you care about the most and use them against you.
