Labyrinthus (2014) - Film
Quick Summary: Combining science fiction and fantasy elements, this is a fun children's movie. The ending is good except for one minor issue - what happened to the cat?!
Title: Labyrinthus
Release: 2014
Director: Douglas Boswell
Starring:
Spencer Bogaert (Frikke)
Emma Verlinden (Nola)
Frikke, a boy of about 13, leads an ordinary life. He teases his sister, talks about girls with his best friend, and works hard at school. This ordinary life comes to an abrupt end when he finds a strange old camera with a USB flash drive clipped onto it. Frikke plugs the drive into his computer, and finds himself playing a game called 'Labyrinthus', where a flying paper hat navigates a seemingly endless maze. There doesn't seem to be much to the game, until Frikke decides to try out the camera. He takes a picture of his family cat, Mops, and immediately a digitized version of Mops appears in the game. Disturbingly, the real Mops loses consciousness moments later. When Frikke finds Nola, a girl his own age, wandering the game world, he knows he has to take action.
This is a fun movie, combing elements of science fiction and fantasy into a tension-filled adventure. The integration of real people into the computer-generated world is absolutely masterful, and the child actors feel realistic and believable, with a minimum of overacting. The plot moves quickly, and the ending is satisfying – well, except for one small issue. Every person sucked into the game world – except the villain who designed the game – is safely rescued from it. But once Mops the cat enters the game and loses consciousness, we never see him again. I have to admit, I was left, at the end of the film, asking, 'What happened to the cat?!
