Gattaca (1997)

⚠️ Spoiler Warning ⚠️

Gattaca is a scifi movie which tells the story of a futuristic dystopian world that driven by eugenics. Gattaca is not a bad movie, like I do get the idea of the movie "after all, there is no gene for fate", however in terms of scifi it's quite terrible.

First of all, the problem could be solved in a few mins if they had security camera. Sure they have reached the technology level to modify human genes but can't afford security cameras in working place to figure out who murdered the man. I understand that it's a dystopian society which they have complete faith in their genetically modified people. These people wouldn't do anything to harm their system/other people since there's no "violent genes" in them so it's no need to supervise; but the point of security camera is not just about controlling the internal it also helps to detect possible external problems such as "invalid criminals" breaking into their workplace...

Second if you wanna make a dystopian sci-fi movie u better make the audience feel oppressed while they imagine of living in a place like that. I barely see Vincent's disadvantages/struggles in life before he started faking his identity. The movie only has a few short scenes showing that he's not the favorite kid and later his janitor work. I wanna see him getting treated like an animal, a criminal rather than a human being; being abused by the valid people and having to eat dirt to survive.

Another problem in here is I don't really like the ending, I mean it got a prefect quote to end the movie right there, but i sorta want him to come back on earth one year later and shows the world he's an invalid and prove that the impossibility is possible. It's even better that if the movie shows a future when he become a legend in the space field and when he's about to retire he reveal the secret he's been hiding for years by giving a public speech. To be fair he doesn't necessarily prove that miracle to the whole world, he proved it to himself and fulfilled his dream and maybe that's enough; but I don't like watching a movie about a man whose life has been suppressed by that dystopian world and does not stand up to rebel against/destroy that world (yea I'm just obsessed with the movie Brazil). I want him to eventually become a pioneer and start a new path, a brighter future for the invalids and motivate them no matter what the result will be (well to be fair he motivated Jerome and that man ended up committing suic!de, nice job right there Vincent!). It's like he's supporting the idea that of that dystopian world at this point; he's proving to everyone that only the valid people are qualified to do major tasks and deserves being treated differently due to their genetic perfection, and also widening this gap between these two types of people.

One more thing is how the fuck Jerome prepared for Vincent everything he needs "to last you two lifetimes" at the end of the movie. Like preparing the blood is fine since they only need a tiny amount of blood for the daily procedure it's still convincing, but what about his piss? That's an absurd amount of piss to store right there lol... overall a 7.5/10 movie
