Dark city (1998)

⚠️ spoiler warning ⚠️

Watched the director's cut, the version which they didn't explain the whole plot at the beginning.

"You heard of a movie called Dark City? The aliens abducted us and brought us to a city where days dont exist to mix people memories to see what makes human being unique? You cant remember cant you? You think thats kind of odd?"

The first 40 minutes of this movie was quite slow and a little bit hard to follow, like when those aliens started tuning the city and made everyone there fall asleep, I almost fell asleep with them too lol. Also, the acting was kinda off like everyone looked confused and they seemed like they didn't know how to act (had the exact experience while watching the crow, I'm started to think Alex Proyyas told his actors to deliberately give a bad performance in all of his movies). Well, the acting in the crow sucks, that's undeniable but this similar acting style fits very well in this movie once things started to reveal. Like yea that's the point, everyone was continually confused, lost, and disoriented for having multiple lives inside one body. They were not able to fully express it since they were still in total control of those aliens, but you can still notice those subtle facial expressions. Also the movie got some silly ideas like why the heck those aliens who got psychic power would use knives to fight lol?

Looking on the bright side, Dark city is a visually stunning, mysterious, thought-provoking, and intriguing movie. The city also got this very bizarre and comforting vibes which I cannot really explain. I just got immersed by the artificial and gloomy beauty of it and the idea of the sun and memories don't even exist in this place. Just hypnotizing, like the way Jennifer Connelly sang in the movie. And the ending of Dark City was so beautifully melancholy. Sure, Murdoch prevailed the aliens and got a godlike power now which he can use it to tune everything he wants, and he's started to get to know Emma (Anna) again, which seems pretty amazing but he's still confined there. While Emma standing on the pier, admiring the beauty of the never-ending horizon; John stands at the very same place but all he could see was the cold and indifferent universe far beyond here. Now he's a god, but what kind of god that is trapped in his own creation and still clings to the old memories which he may never be certain are his own. How ironic.

"Will a man, given the history of a killer, continue in that vein? Or are we, in fact, more than the mere sum of our memories?"
