Tent of Telepathy

It was a typical day at the mystery shack. Gideon manned the cash register while Pacifica swept. The bell rang as someone walked into the shack. On reflex Gideon and Pacifica turned to the person who had walked in.
"Hi welcome to the Mystery Shack, we put the fun in no refunds!" They said in unison to the person standing in the doorway, who happened to be Robbie. Robbie was wearing his usual button up, with khakis. He also had his signature no. 2 pencils in his chest pocket.
"Sounds like someone's been practicing" he remarked. Then he walked over to the counter, and leaned his back against it, folding his arms. "So how's it going?" He asked his voice cracking on the last word. Pacifica was the first to respond.
"Great, what are you doing here?" She asked curiously. Robbie shrugged before answering.
"Surprise, surprise Bud's having computer problems again" he said with sarcasm. He walked to the door that lead into the house part of the tourist trap. Gideon turned to Robbie with a hesitant look plastered onto his face.
"Do you wanna go on a monster hunt?" Gideon asked expecting an immediate no. Robbie raised his eyebrow.
"Actually how about we check out this new magic show in town" he suggested. "I heard that they're supposed to be the real deal. It's the talk of the town" Robbie added on. Pacifica perked up.
"Really!?" Pacifica had never been to a magic show before. She turned to Gideon. "We're gonna go right?" She asked eagerly. Gideon shifted uncomfortably.
"I kind've want to go on a monster hunt, or solve one of the mysteries surrounding the journal" he explained. Pacifica rolled her eyes. Honestly, Gideon spent too much time looking through his journal as it is, and now he had a chance to go do something fun besides his journal.
"We have all summer to solve those mysteries, and I want to go to this magic show at least once" she whined. Gideon shrugged, he couldn't argue with her reasoning.
"Ok, I guess I'll come" he said succumbing to peer pressure. They were probably going to drag him along no matter what he said.
"Well, I better go help your uncle" Robbie said turning to leave.
"See ya later"Pacifica waved him good bye, and then returned to sweeping. Five minutes later the door swung open and Robbie strode back out into the gift shop. "Wow that was fast!" Pacifica said looking up at him. Robbie looked extremely annoyed.
"His computer wasn't even plugged in" Robbie explained. "I'll be back at six to pick you guys up since the show starts at six-thirty" Robbie told them before exiting the shack.
"Robbie's pretty cool huh" Pacifica said turning to Gideon. A look of realization spread across Gideon's face like wildfire.
"You like him don't you" Gideon exclaimed pointing an accusatory finger at her. A blush formed on Pacifica's face, confirming Gideon's theory.
"What! No I don't" she stammered trying to deny it. Gideon smirked.
"Sure whatever you say Paz" Gideon laid the sarcasm on as thick as he could.
Later that night Robbie came and picked them up. It was six, just as he promised. The bell rang as he walked through the door. He could here the thundering of someone running down the stairs. Pacifica burst through the door that connected the house to the gift shop. She was wearing a neon green skirt, with yellow socks and a purple sweatshirt. The sweatshirt had a picture of a bunny wearing a top hat.
"Hi Robbie" Pacifica said cheerfully. Robbie could tell she was excited to go. They sat there awkwardly waiting for Gideon. Finally Robbie had to ask the billion dollar question.
"Where's Gideon?" Pacifica shrugged, and then left the room to go get him. Robbie just stood there waiting expectantly.
"Gideon come on let's go!" He heard Pacifica say, then five seconds later Pacifica popped back into the room dragging Gideon along with her. Gideon was wearing his signature hat, black vest and red shirt. He also wore a frown on his face.
"Why are you guys so excited to go? They're just going to be a pair of fakers like every other so called 'magician' " Gideon said clearly frustrated that they were bringing him along. He bent down to tie his shows, and then the trio was off. Robbie was driving, and Pacifica was in the passenger seat which left Gideon in the back. Alone. Again. Robbie's car was a beat down red Grand-am. Gideon was surprised the car even worked, but he didn't want to complain. The three arrived at six-fifteen to find a long line had already formed in front of the Tent of Telepathy. Pacifica hopped out of the car and sprinted to find a spot in line. She turned to Robbie and Gideon.
"Hurry up guys, I wanna get good seats" she said excitedly. Gideon let out a sigh, and walked to join her in line. Robbie finished locking up his car before jogging to join them in line. After waiting another fifteen minutes they finally reached the front of the line. Robbie payed for the three of them by donating money to the 'psychic sack'. The old man holding the sack wore a blue tux and a red fez. He thanked them for there contribution to the psychic sack. Something seemed off about that guy Gideon thought. He seemed a lot like Uncle Bud, except maybe better at scamming people. Gideon followed Robbie and Pacifica as they found seats. The group sat smack in the middle of the tent. Not as close to the stage as Pacifica wanted, and not as close to the door as Gideon wanted, but it was a happy medium. While they were waiting for the show to start Gideon looked around and saw all the people shuffling in the tent. It seemed as though the entire town was here. Then the lights dimmed.
"Reality" a boy's voice said in the darkness. Pacifica could barely make out his shadowy silhouette. Then another shady figure appeared on stage.
"Illusion" the alluring girl's voice spoke. Then together the mysterious pair spoke.
"Magic" they said in unison, as a spotlight shined on them. The light revealed twins. The boy had his hair slicked back revealing a birthmark which was the Big Dipper. He wore a blue tuxedo with a white undershirt. Around his neck was a necklace with a dazzling blue gem attached. His sister wore a blue blouse coupled with a black skirt and leggings. She had long silky chocolate brown hair, which had a headband adorned with an amulet similar to her brother's. Both had glowing blue eyes. The girl took a step forward to begin introductions.
"My name is Mabel Gleeful, and this here is Dipper Gleeful" she said gesturing towards the boy standing beside her. Pacifica glanced at Dipper. He was the most beautiful boy she had ever seen. Gideon also noticed how attractive Mabel was, but unlike Pacifica he had no interest in delusions of romance.
"Welcome to the Tent of Telepathy" Dipper said his voice smoother than silk. Gideon noticed something odd about Dipper. He gave off a strange vibe, like he was uninterested in being there. His face was completely emotionless. Suddenly the magic began. A blue smoke billowed from thin air. The Gleefuls became enveloped in the wisps of smoke. The smoke cleared as soon as it had appeared, only this time when the smoke was gone so were the twins.
"You know I've always wondered what it's like from the perspective of the audience" the feminine voice of Mabel said above Gideon's head. Another voice spoke, this one was above Pacifica's head.
"Sister dearest, now is not the time to be lounging around, we have a show to perform" Dipper said without an ounce of emotion. Pacifica and Gideon looked up to see the twins were levitating in midair. While Mabel smiled with glee, Dipper sat there with a blank face. Gasps erupted from the audience. "People payed for a show, so we are obliged to give them one they won't soon forget" Dipper declared.
"Your right brother, but while we're out her why don't we pick out a couple of volunteers for our first act" Mabel suggested innocently. Dipper rolled his eyes, and folded his arms.
"Fine how about this girl?" Dipper asked directing his eyes to Pacifica. Mabel flashed her perfect teeth to the audience.
"Well, well, well, Dipper you sure picked out a cute one" Mabel teased. Dipper ignored Mabel, and held his hand out to Pacifica. Pacifica hesitantly took it, a blush forming on her cheeks. Then they flashed back onto stage, Pacifica with them. When they were on stage Mabel turned towards Pacifica. "So what's your name?" Mabel asked. Pacifica stood up straight like a soldier standing at attention. Her body was uptight, and she seemed uncomfortable with everyone watching her.
"P-Pacifica Southeast" she stammered.
"A pretty name for a pretty girl" Dipper commented. his voice remained without emotion. Pacifica's face turned scarlet. Dipper snapped his fingers, and a box appeared. The Box was crimson red, and human sized. The Tent of Telepathy logo was plastered onto the front of the box. Dipper opened it to reveal a hollow inside. "If I could ask you to step into the box of wonder" Dipper said pointing to the Crimson stage prop, that Mabel had summoned. Pacifica stepped into the box hesitantly, and Dipper closed the door then locked it. Then he stepped away from it. "Many think death is a reality, but tonight I will prove it is simply an allusion" Dipper said firmly. His eyes bored into Gideon's skull. Gideon watched the trick intently, worried for Pacifica's safety. Dipper and Mabel clutched their amulets. That's when knives started flying from offstage into the box. Gideon's heart skipped a beat once for every knife that was wrenched into the box. Fear filled his eyes. How could they do this in front of a live audience? He asked himself. The knives stopped flowing into the box. Mabel opened the door to the box to reveal Gideon's worst fears. Pacifica was inside the box, blood leaking from her many cuts, and stab wounds. Mabel closed the box and stepped away. The pair of magicians grabbed their amulets, and began chanting something under their breathes. When they stopped chanting, Mabel opened the box again to reveal Pacifica perfectly fine. The crowd went wild. They ate up the miracle that the twins had conjured. Gideon on the other hand, was still horrified. After Pacifica rejoined the audience the show continued. The twins did many amazing and dangerous tricks. When the show was over Gideon immediately got up to leave, Robbie following him. Pacifica stayed to take one last look at the stage. Mabel was there waving goodbye to her adoring fans while Dipper was nowhere to be found.

Dipper strode back stage. Waiting for him was his guardian, and grunkle, Stan. Stan gave Dipper a toothy grin. He patted Dipper on the back.
"Nice work, kid" he said. Dipper ignored the compliment and kept walking. He stopped to exchange words with Stan.
"These shows are Mundane Stan, they aren't worthy of my time" Dipper stated coldly. Stan ignored his negativity, and put his arm around Dipper's shoulder. A look of annoyance flashed across Dipper's face but he didn't let Stan see.
"Sure they are, kid. Mabel loves them, we get money to put food on the table, and don't think for a second that I didn't see you with that volunteer" Stan's reasoning was less than flawless. Dipper rolled his eyes, and removed Stan's arm from his shoulder. He walked away from the older man pausing only to finish there conversation.
"I have no use for such meaningless attachments. By the end of the summer, I won't need anything or anyone, because I will have power beyond your comprehension" Dipper said before leaving. Stan smiled and adjusted his glasses.
"Don't be so sure kid" he said knowing that Dipper wasn't listening.
