Chapter Twelve
As the sun rose on yet another day at the Lookout, Chase slowly opened his eyes, peering out of the window. What's wrong with me, he thought. He jumped as Humdinger's face flashed before his eyes. Growling, he trotted quietly out of his pup house. I haven't talked to SKye in a while. I hope she's doing alright.
He made his way up to Ryder's room, where Skye insisted on being last night. As he nudged the door open, he noticed something strange. Skye's scent had faded, as if she hadn't been there. Odd, Chase thought. "Skye?" he whispered. "You in here?" No response. As Chase looked around the room, he gasped.
"Katie!" he yelled into his collar. "Skye's missing!"
"What?" Katie said groggily. Shaking her head, she immediately pushed a button on Ryder's pup pad. "PAW Patrol, to the Lookout! Don't bother changing!"
"Huh?" Marshall said as his tag glowed. "Katie, what's going on?" he said as he ran alongside her.
"Skye is missing. I need you and Chase to find her. I'll have Rocky track her-"
"Not getting a signal from her collar!" Rocky yelled.
"Marshall, go, now!" The Dalmatian nodded and rushed off with Chase, both forgetting their gear.
"Can you get her scent?" Marshall asked. Chase paused for a few seconds, sniffing the air and the ground.
He whined, tilting his head. "It's like she's everywhere at once. I can't seem to focus on one scent."
"You've got to try, Chase! You can do it!" Chase continued sniffing, occasionally looking towards Jake's Mountain. "Is she up there?"
"She might be. It's subtle, but her scent is a little stronger that way."
"We've got nothing to lose, let's go!" Marshall and Chase took off towards the tallest peak in Adventure Bay.

"Ryder," a familiar voice said. "Ryder wake up." He felt something wet and cold against his face. As Ryder sat up, he felt something move across his body. "Look, he's up!" Opening his eyes, he was greeted with a familiar set of brown eyes.
"Chase?" he said in shock. "Where am I?" He reached out to pet his dog, but found himself restrained against a bed. "What? What's going on?" Chase started growling as Humdinger appeared in front of them.
"Good morning, sleepy head. How are you feeling?"
"What's going on? Where am I?" Ryder repeated.
"The experiment was a success, sir," a voice said.
"Excellent," Humdinger said. "Experiment 101, come." Chase hopped down from the bed, trotting up towards Humdinger.
"Wh- Chase! No!"
Humdinger laughed. "You really thought this was Chase?" It was then that Ryder noticed the difference. Chase's tail was long while this pup had a short tail. "Thanks to you, we've perfected the cloning process."
"But, how? I thought you needed me to figure it out?"
"That was precisely what we needed. You. Your DNA. It's fused with Chase's, enabling him to talk."
"What now? What're you going to do with me?" Ryder said nervously. "You have what you need."
"I'm going to let you go," Humdinger said. He turned to leave.
"Wait!" Humdinger stopped. "You're just going to let me go? Just like that?"
Humdinger smiled. "Well, of course. How else do you expect fall?" Ryder's heart dropped.
"You're going to-" Humdinger nodded slowly, a smile appearing on his face.
"Thank you, Ryder. For... everything." Humdinger slammed the door behind him.
I've got to get out of here, Ryder thought. Looking at his shackles, he realized it was pointless. There was no way he could break the steel. Tears began falling down his cheeks as he fell back in bed. I'm never going home. Never going to see the pups or Katie ever again. He silently cried to himself, not wanting to give Humdinger the benefit of hearing him cry. What did I do to deserve any of this?
***
"Hey, little dudes," Jake greeted. "Whoa, you pups look like you just ran a marathon!" He placed two bowls of water in front of Chase and Marshall.
The poor pups were still panting heavily, even after they had their drink. "It's... Skye," Chase said.
"She's... missing..." Marshall said. "Have you...?"
"No, sorry guys. She hasn't been up here. Why don't you guys roll around in the snow a bit. You need to cool off." Both pups nodded as they headed back outside.
"Marshall? Chase?" Katie said through their collars.
"No sign, Katie," Marshall said. Chase collapsed in the snow, tail and ears relaxed.
"I got him," Jake said. "Whoa, he's really burning up!"
"Katie, Chase might be getting sick or something. Jake said he's burning up."
"His body is working hard to get rid of the drugs," Katie said. "I'm surprised it didn't kick in sooner. Keep him in the snow, I'm on my way." She hung up, grabbing her keys. "Rocky, I need you to-"
"Head up and scout the area in Skye's chopper? On it!" Katie giggled as the mixed breed ran off. It worried her that Skye would just take off like that, unannounced. Especially with her not being able to very well. Skye does have her wings, though. She can fly herself out of danger.
***
"This is what I get for not filling up my wings before I left," Skye huffed. She was stuck on a cliff. She hadn't been in this area of the island, just past the forest. She had flown all night, taking in the surroundings, the freedom of being able to fly. Her paws were feeling better, almost good enough to walk on. She didn't risk it, though. I had to be so stupid as to forget my collar, too. She growled at herself. The pups will find me. I'm sure of it.
The screech of an eagle drew her from her thoughts. Oh no! Skye, being as small as she is, was the perfect size to be swooped up by an eagle. She pinned herself against the side of the cliff, hoping to stay out of the hungry birds view. PAW Patrol better hurry!
***
"Wha-" Chase said as he opened his eyes. The room was pitch black. He couldn't see anything, not even his own muzzle. "Where am I?"
"Welcome, pup," Humdinger's voice said.
Chase growled. "Show yourself!" When the lights came on, he realized he was back in the lab, strapped to the operating table. "L-let me go!"
"Aw, the poor puppy is scared. What's the matter? I thought you were stronger than this." Humdinger laughed, slamming his hand on the table. "You are weak."
"No," Chase said.
"Your own team thinks you're weak."
"No." Chase struggled against the restraints.
"Why do you think Marshall is leading the team? He's older. Smarter. Stronger." Chase's growl echoed throughout the room. "I wouldn't be surprised if they replaced you."
"No!" Chase barked. The chains broke, freeing him. He tackled Humdinger. "I'm not weak! Marshall himself said I was strong! My team needs me!" He bit his hand, causing Humdinger to shriek. Chase licked the blood off of his lips, leaning in close to his ears. "You're. Going. Down." The room fell dark once more as Chase sighed with relief.
***
"His fever's going down," Marshall said. "I think he's waking up!" Katie and the pups slowly walked in, watching. The German shepherd seemed to be mumbling something in his sleep. "Come on, Chase," he said, wiping his friend's sweaty forehead. "You can fight it, I know you can." Chase sighed, a smile appearing on his face. "Chase?"
"He's exhausted," Katie said. "Let's let him rest."
"I'll stay," Zuma offered. "Rocky still isn't back yet."
"No," Katie said. "All pups on deck. We need to find Skye before nightfall."
"Rocky," Rubble said. "We're coming out to help you."
"Roger that!" Rocky said, refusing to lose focus. "Marshall, North, Rubble, South, Zuma, East. I'll head West." The pups grabbed their gear, preparing for what could be a long day.
***
Skye was tired, hot, hungry and thirsty. She knew she could die up here. Rocky probably has my chopper, she thought. But we haven't explored the entire island. They probably don't know about this cliff. She sighed as she watched the sunset, listening to the birds chirping.
"The whistle!" Skye yelled. There was a whistle attached to her wings to get the pup's attention. It was a dog whistle, which would hurt their ears, but it was better than nothing. She blew into it as hard as she could. She winced in pain, hoping the other pups would hear it.
***
As Rocky flew over the forest, he heard something that made him flinch, losing control of the chopper for a few moments. "That, ow, sound! I recognize that sound!" His ears were tightly pinned back, but now he knew which direction to go in. "Pups!" he called out into his collar. "Follow the whistle!"
"You want us to, ah, follow that horrible sound?" Zuma said.
"It hurts!" Rubble said.
"Skye's the only one with that whistle," Rocky said. "Marshall, which truck are you driving?"
"Mine. Zuma has Chase's."
"Zuma, follow me. The rest of you, hang back!" Rocky hovered over Zuma, giving him time to follow. "There! I see her!" he said. "She's on the cliff. Zuma, think you can make it up there?"
"I'll try!" Zuma raced up the steep mountain, avoiding rocks and cracks in the road.
"Skye, Zuma's on his way up! How are you?"
"I'm hungry and hot!" Skye yelled back.
"What happened to your wings?"
"No gas!" Skye's ears perked as she heard Chase's wench. "Chase?"
"Nope!" Zuma peaked over the edge. "It's me! I'm lowering the winch. Hook on and I'll pull you up!" SKye made sure her jetpack was on securely before attaching the winch. She gulped before giving Zuma the signal.
"Katie," Rocky said. "We found her! She's safe!"
"Great!" Katie said. Marshall and the other pups had just arrived. "I'll make sure everything is set up for when she gets back." Ryder's pup pad started flashing. "You might want to hurry. There's a storm headed your way!"
"Don't *static* can't *static* Skye *static*"
"Rocky?" There was no answer. "Zuma?" Silence. "Pups, can you contact Rocky or Zuma?"
"It must be the storm," Rubble said.
"All we can do now if hope they make it out in time," Marshall said. Thunder rumbled in the distance.
"I've got a bad feeling, guys," Rubble said. Katie picked him up with a worried look on her face as lighting flashed.
