Chapter 3: Whatever It Takes to Get Revenge

The next day, Nene woke up with no emotions or feelings. She had spent the whole night crying her eyes out but now that she was very tired she couldn't feel anything.

She kept on thinking about the day before and everything that had happened. She thought about how there were clear signs that this was going to happen, but she chose to ignore them. She could have gotten herself and Minori to evacuate the area and take safety somewhere else, or she could have stood in the way and protected her friend from getting stabbed instead of freezing and being left with a pathetic scar on her cheek.

The girl would have happily taken Minori's place. She would happily do anything just to see her again and to finally tell her how she feels, even though they would now never be together...

With all of these thoughts swirling in her mind, she got up from her bed and left her house to get some fresh air. She then walked to the clearing where the cherry blossom tree and her friend's corpse was.

The cherry blossom tree had no more flowers on it, signifying that there really was no hope left. And along with that, all the pink flowers had completely lost their colour, similar to how Nene had lost all of the light in her eyes.

The green haired girl bent down and sat beside her friend's dead body. Her skin was even more pale than yesterday but yet she was still smiling. A small smile appeared on Nene's face as she was happy that her friend was probably living her best life in the clouds above but it quickly returned to a frown as she missed her so much

She leant in and kissed Minori again to see if she could bring her back, but she didn't awake. Nene's hand then went into the pocket of her dress and took out a cherry blossom she had collected and looked after from the day the two first met. She then gently placed it on the deceased girl's hair and stood up before walking away.

A new thought then came to her head as she left. If she couldn't bring her best friend back, she could at least avenge her by killing the knight that murdered her. That way she could bring her justice and maybe feel joy again after sacrificing him for her.

A smile tugged at the corner of her lips as she walked through the village. All of the villagers watched her with concern as she walked up to the castle but she didn't notice, she was now hyperfixated on her new goal in her pathetic life that she felt she didn't deserve to live...

She had heard many times about recruitments to become a knight in the Tenma Kingdom army and she decided that is where she would start. By becoming a knight of the opposing army to the Asahina Kingdom she could go to war with them and finish off the ginger haired knight.

As I approached the door two guards stood in the way of it and halted me from going further.

"Good morning, what makes your appearance here?" The silver haired guard questioned, looking at her with suspicion.

"I'm here to sign up to become a knight of the Tenma army!" I declared.

The silver haired knight studied me with a raised eyebrow but the navy blue haired knight put a hand on her shoulder and whispered something in her ear.

Despite how suspicious the silver haired knight was of Nene, she nodded and then the two knights opened the door before letting the green haired girl through. Nene smiled at them for a split second before walking in the hall of the Tenma castle.

She walked and walked until she then arrived at the throne room where Prince Tenma Tsukasa sat, his grin glowing as brightly as his golden crown.

However, it quickly faded as his gaze fell upon the green haired girl.

"Who are you and what are you doing here?!" He exclaimed.

A guard with dusty rise coloured hair then ran in and stood in front of his throne to protect him, a serious but sad expression on her face similar to the green haired girl's own.

"My name is Kusanagi Nene and I've come here to become a knight for your army!" Nene shouted.

"And what makes you want to become a knight?" He asked, taken aback by her aggressive confidence.

"I am driven by a goal to avenge my dear friend after the invasion yesterday by killing the ginger haired knight of the Asahina kingdom!" The green haired girl explained, beads of sweat beginning to drop from her forehead as she worried she wouldn't be accepted.

"Driven by grief? Me and Honami here can certainly relate to that as we lost my younger sister Saki who was also her partner to a curse recently..." The Prince replied.

Nene then looked at the guard called Honami who looked away as she tried to hide her tears. She understood exactly what she was going through.

"Very well then, you may be a knight for my army!" He announced.

The green haired girl nodded and curtsied for the prince before she was taken to the changing rooms and given her knight uniform by Honami. Once she was finished getting changed, she then looked in the mirror and sighed.

She only then realised how much of a state she looked in. The light was gone from her eyes, she had black circles under them and the scar was very visible. She was about to turn away when she saw a pair of rusted scissors.

Nene picked them up and decided to cut her hair. She didn't really have much of a plan when she was doing it as she had never had her hair cut prior but she wanted to make herself look strong to bring honour to Minori's name.

Fury then rose in her as she finished and she began banging on the table of the changing room.

"CURSE YOU MIKU!!!" She screeched.

Even though there as now hope that she could avenge her friend, she no longer believed in the goddess Hatsune Miku. She could have done something to save her if she truly existed, and therefore the green haired girl felt it had been pointless to worship Miku all her life.

Besides, Minori was her goddess now...

Once she was finished, the guard then led her to a room where other knights were.

She looked around but was immediately drawn to the sight of a purple haired boy. It was Rui, her childhood friend. Nene felt quite awkward going over to him as they hadn't talked for many years but she didn't really have much of a choice as she didn't know anyone else.

"Hello Rui..." She muttered as she had approached him.

"Why hello there, Nene! So you've decided to become a knight too?" Rui greeted.

"I guess so..." Nene shrugged, "But what are you doing here? I thought you were a sorcerer?"

"I'm both now after my beloved Tsukasa-kun saw potential in me to be a knight as well," He explained.

"Oh great! He's dating the prince..." She sighed under her breath.

"Anyway, meet my new friend, Emu-kun!" Rui took the hand of a pink haired girl stood beside her.

"Hello, my name is Otori Emu!" She greeted and shook the green haired girl's hand with a lot of energy.

"Hello..." Nene muttered her greeting, she felt too tired to be making friends with someone who looked like they were having a sugar rush.

"What happened to you, Nene?" The purple haired boy questioned, his face full of concern as his yellow eyes went back and forth, looking between her eye bags, scar and freshly cut hair.

"It's nothing!" She exclaimed and then turned away, immediately regretting that she had just shouted at him.

She could then feel everyone's eyes on her and silence engulfed the room so she looked at the floor, but then that brought flashbacks to when she first looked down at Minori's corpse.

"I'm worried about Nene-chan..." She heard Emu whimpered.

All she could hear from Rui's response was a grunt in agreement before everyone's attention then turned towards the door.

"Training is about to begin! Please go outside and await further instructions!" Honami shouted loudly, her voice echoing across the room.

Everyone nodded and then left the room and went outside to the garden that was also the knight training grounds. Nene followed behind everyone else, her deathly gaze unwavering...
