Chapter 13
Bami got up to have his breakfast. He had returned very late and was very tired and had not bothered to spare a look to Zarghoona. Now when he was awake he saw her sleeping curled into a foetal position. He got ready and left, their were some places he would like to see in the early morning light and have breakfast at a place he knew served excellent breakfast. This was the best way he could spend his stay here. It had been too long since he had a leave from work and this was the opportunity where he could spend sometime for himself.
Zarghoona woke up to see the bed empty and made. Bami had an habit of making his bed after waking up. He got into this habit after moving to hostel. Zarghoona thought he might be in washroom, she waited for ten minutes and then all of a sudden she realised that she was alone again and Bami had left. She felt frustrated, the fear through which she went yesterday was making her aggressive. The knocking had scared her so much. She had prayed so hard to Allah that He gets her out of this situation somehow. Now that she was in broad daylight her fear was channeled into anger.
Why did he marry me if he despises me so much. Why pretend to people by bringing me here. Enough is enough, he was the first to agree to marry me. I'll not tolerate such dismissive behaviour from him. He's got to give me some sort of explanation.
Zarghoona was seething in anger. She paced the room again and again. Last night had been horrible. She had thought she would talk to her husband about it and he would understand but he didn't let her have the chance. Since they came to Zairat, she only saw him the day they arrived after that he had been out all the time. Zarghoona didn't have any idea when did he came back to their room last night. She might have been in deep sleep because that knocking ordeal had tired her up. Her stomach grumbled and she realised how hungry she was, she didn't had dinner last night and no breakfast today. She picked the room intercom and called the kitchen. She was too afraid to step out of her room and eat in the dining room thus, she ordered her lunch in the room.
Twenty minutes later her food came. She switched on the Tv, enjoyed her meal and her favourite show forgetting about how angry she was with her husband. Afternoon changed into evening and she ordered tea. But as the sunlight was fading her fear was starting to come back and Bami was still not in sight.
She looked out the window and saw the man knocking on her door. He was soon joined by another "She's alone, what luck we have" said the first man.
"What a night we'll have". They bumped there fists and laughed.
What should she do now, where did Bami go. Who will come to help her. The knocking became more louder.
"Allah please help me" Zarghoona could feel moisture in her eyes and thorns in her throat.
"Open the door, we are here to fix your Tv."
Zarghoona knew the Tv was alright, she had been watching it. She kept silent and didn't reply. "Come on open the door, I don't have all night, we are just going to have a little fun with you".
Zarghoona couldn't believe it, they were not even discreet about it. What should she do. Screaming wouldn't do any good and there wasn't any other way from where she can escape.
The knocking was becoming violent and the door was now kicked and pushed as well. The door rattled and Zarghoona couldn't stop the scream bubbling out of her throat. In all this commotion she heard a voice, thunderous voice of a man.
"What are you both doing?" asked the new comer.
The knocking ceased and the men from early didn't answer.
"Shall I call the police? no I should call them" .
"No no we are going, we didn't mean any wrong". Answered the men from before, their voice had fear in it.
"I'll see you two tomorrow. Now go!". Boomed the voice.
Zarghoona thanked Allah continuously. She heard the same voice again but this time it addressed her.
"Ma'am I'm very sorry about what happened. I'm the owner of this place and I would for sure punish those two tomorrow. Please don't be afraid. I'll tell the manager to keep an eye on your room."
Due to her fear Zarghoona couldn't even say Thankyou.
Zarghoona shuddered at this recollection from yesterday. She looked towards the window and it was time for Maghrib and again her husband was not back. She had started her prayers when Bami entered. He went to washroom and came and settled himself on the bed. He seemed to be angry. When he saw Zarghoona wrapping the prayer mat he spoke.
"You couldn't stay away from getting attention?". He said sarcastically.
"What?" Zarghoona didn't understand what was he saying.
"I was away for only a single day and you attracted the male population here".
Zarghoona was dumbfounded, she didn't understand at all what was he saying.
"Don't act innocent now, the manager told me what happened last night".
"So what does that have to do with me seeking attention". Countered Zarghoona.
"Oh really, don't pretend. I know how much you like to have males attracted towards you and then act as if you don't know about any of their attraction".
"What do you mean, I should be the one angry here. You left me alone and they wanted to enter seeing that you are not here".
"So why didn't they enter, are you taking me for a fool". Bami was becoming angry every passing moment.
"The owner of this place stopped them, it should have been you but you were too busy sightseeing". Pointed out Zarghoona.
A sick smile appeared on Bami's face "why? Why do you think it should have been me to save you from your lovers".
"Because you're my husband and I'm your responsibility. You married me in front of the whole world. You have some obligations towards me and I'm sorry to say you have failed badly at being a husband". She ignored the 'lovers' part.
"Obligations hmmmm? So I'm not a good husband. Okay you tell me how is a good husband" questioned Bami.
"Who said anything about a good husband, you are not even close to being an husband let alone a good one. Just forget it". Zarghoona said in a mocking tone and turned to go to washroom but she was stopped by a hand on her wrist.
"Let go of my hand". Zarghoona was full on angry now.
Bami jerked her towards himself and wrapped one of his one hand around her and the other was holding her left wrist which he had twisted towards her back. Zarghoona was not understanding what was happening.
" Now I'll show you what husband is. I've been too lenient with you".
He was whispering and moving his nose up and down on the side of her face. Zarghoona was frozen. Bami's nose was now descending towards the column of her neck. Zarghoona knew she had to react, she started to wriggle in his hold but he tightened his hold on her and let go of her hand instead he used both his hands to crush her towards his chest. He started sucking on her neck. This is what she wanted he thought to himself.
"I'll be a husband to you and you would be a wife to me in every sense of the word".
She kicked and punched but nothing was useful. Bami pulled her towards the bed and threw her forcefully. She started to move to the other side of the bed but Bami pulled her from her ankle. He straddled her and started to take off his shirt.
"You talked about the obligations of a husband, what about your obligations as a wife and my rights". He held both are wrists in one hand and with the other he started to explore her body over her kameez. Zarghoona had tears flowing down her temples. She was trying to stop him as much as possible but he had overpowered her.
He bit her on her neck knowing full well it would leave a mark, his mark. "IBRAHIM! Please stop". Pleaded Zarghoona.
Bami's hand travelled beneath her kameez and was about to get hold of her breast when a loud knock stopped him, he was going to ignore it but again the door knocked.
"What?" He barked angry on the intrusion.
"Sir there's a phone call for you from Quetta. It's urgent". Replied the staff from guest house.
Kameez means shirt.
The picture above is a view of Zairat.
