Chapter 26

(Mark's P.O.V.)

I grab Wade from the mob and pull him into the hallway right as the bell rings.

"Mark what are you doing? We need to get to class!" He says. I shake my head, tears spilling still.

"No! I don't care! We need to find Seán!" I say. Wade looks at me confused.

"Seán?" He asks. I shake my head, to sad to comprehend the fact that no one else knows his real name.

"Jack." I fix. He nods then, understanding, and in a second we're both running through the halls, looking into classrooms to try to find Jack. We go through hallway after hallway, stopping at his locker, stopping at the auditorium, the music room, all his classrooms, the principal's office, the VP's office. Everywhere. I can't tell you how worried I am.

Oh my god. What is he going to do? And not only am I worried, but I'm heartbroken. I don't know what I did, but I want him to know I didn't mean to hurt him. I love him with all my heart, and it hurts when you're beloved calls you a traitor. It really, really hurts. Eventually, I stop running, just collapsing on the ground and panting.

"We can't... We can't find him..." I pant, shaking my head slowly. Wade stops too, bending over and putting his hands on his knees.

"One more room... One more to check..." He pants, standing up again and walking to a room only a few doors down. I follow, slower though. He stops outside a door. "Last year when you were in that coma I found him hiding in here. I'm hoping he's here." He whispers. I nod, and very slowly and quietly, he opens the door.

And sure enough, there, sitting against the wall with his knees tucked up to his chest, and his arms around his knees, sits Jack. He just sits there, staring at the wall. I look around the room. It's an unused classroom. All the blinds are shut, so it's dark. There are desks, but he's just sitting against the wall. It's kinda scary. I walk over to him slowly, Wade doing the same.

"Jack?" Wade asks quietly. Nothing.

"Seán, come on." I say, but he does nothing. He just keeps staring at the wall, almost as if he doesn't realize we're here. I kneel down next to him, Wade standing on the other side of him. "Seán are you okay? I'm sorry for whatever I did. I'm sorry." I say, but he does nothing. I look up at Wade, who just shrugs.

Then I reach out, putting my hand on his shoulder. And he freaks out. He pulls away from my grasp and starts screaming, crying, yelling. He tucks into a tighter ball, crying into his knees. I look at Wade with wide eyes, and he returns the gaze. It only takes a couple minutes for Jack to go back to expressionless, and staring at the wall. I stand up, taking Wade by the hand and dragging him out of the room, closing the door behind us.

"What the hell was that?" I ask. He shrugs, shaking his head slightly.

"I was hoping you could tell me that." He says. But I just shake my head.

"Whatever happened messed him up bad." He says then, and both of us just stare at the door. How long has this been going on? How long has he been broken, and just now is it showing? Those words... That must be what really put him over the edge. The words, and whatever he thought I did.

"He was crying about not hurting him." Wade says suddenly. I whirl around, looking at Wade.

"What?" I ask. He looks back at me.

"In there. When you touched his shoulder. He was screaming, begging you not to hurt him." He says. I frown, shaking my head.

"Why would he think I was gonna hurt him?" I ask simply. Wade sighs, putting a hand to his forehead.

"Fuck it." He says simply and takes my hand, dragging me outside the school. We sit outside the back of the building, and he stares at me, like he's gonna tell a story. But before he has the chance, Mrs. Walter is outside and yelling at us to get back inside. Wade and I both nod and stand up, walking into the school building slowly.

"I'll tell you tomorrow after school." He says and I nod. Before to long we're both back in math class, and this time we're actually being taught something. But I don't pay attention. I just look at the desk in front of me, and the words, and the insults, and I think...

How badly did that hurt him? Who did it in the first place? Was it the class? Was it one person? No... There are multiple people's handwriting. But... Who did it? Who did it and where are they now? Are they happy? If they knew how Jack is now, how broken he is, would they still be happy with what they did? But most importantly, how am I going to fix this?

Cause I don't think it's gonna be as easy as one two three. I'm gonna have to try to talk to him again tomorrow, and then... If that doesn't work I'm going to talk to his mom and his sister Kate. I have to know his past, who he is. Who he was. And hopefully Wade keeps to his promise and will finally tell me what's been going on. And hopefully...

Hopefully Jack doesn't act on how broken he is...
