Chapter 19

(Mark's P.O.V.)

I sigh as the bell rings and Mrs. Walter walks into the classroom, signaling the start of math. Once again, Jack is late. And it's starting to not only be concerning, but annoying. Because he's always late, I normally don't get a chance to talk to him until lunch. Which I hate. But he doesn't talk to me, and so I can't do anything about it.

I watch as Mrs. Walter does role call, and I answer once my name is called. Silence is heard when Jack's name is called, much to both my and Mrs. Walter's disappointment. And then we start the lesson, the class going by like any other. But even ten minutes in and Jack still isn't here. Now, late is annoying. Ten to twenty minutes late is worrying. He hasn't been this late before.

Hopefully everything's okay... I only somewhat pay attention to the class, the other half of me paying attention to the door and the time. Nearing half an hour late, I can see that it's starting to worry Mrs. Walter too, especially since it's obvious I don't know where he is either. She hesitates in her lesson, sighing and putting her hand to her forehead. Then, after a minute, she opens her mouth to start the lesson again...

But is interrupted by a blood curdling, ear shattering scream. Jack's scream. It echoes through the empty halls, making everyone jump out of their skin. But in only a second, I'm standing and rushing to the door. Mrs. Walter is right behind me, the rest of the class behind her. And I keep running down the hall, following the sounds of screams and cries.

Oh my god, what the hell happened? Is everything okay? Oh my god... I run, and I run. And eventually we get to a hallway, in which there's already another class surrounding the area. I push my way through, Mrs. Walter talking to another teacher. And it's only when I get through the crowd that I gasp, tears coming to my eyes.

There, rolling around on the ground in agony, crying and screaming, is Jack. A butterknife is stabbed in his left eye, and he has his hands around it, blood seeping through his fingers.

"Jack!" I cry, falling on my knees next to him. He looks at me with his one eye, filled with tears. He moves his one hand and I don't care that it's covered in blood, I take it, squeezing his hand in reassurance. "You'll be okay. We're gonna take you to the hospital. You'll be okay." I say, comforting both him and myself. The entire hallway is silent, except for Jack's cries of agony and pain.

And then the ambulance gets here, and everyone moves on like nothing happened.

I watch the doctor as he inspects Jack's eye. Jack himself is asleep, given enough pain meds that it knocked him out. I'm just sitting in a chair behind the doctor, not wanting to see the inside of Jack's eye really, but wanting to be here nonetheless. Dr. Craig sighs and turns the flashlight off, shaking his head.

"Well, I can't say how much damage will be done. Luckily the knife wasn't plunged to far, so there isn't any damage to the brain. However his eyesight will undoubtedly be messed up. How much it's impossible to tell." He says, looking at me. I nod, knowing that isn't all.

"We already stitched up the eye, but it is infected. We'll give him pain medication, and some antiseptics. We'll probably keep him here overnight, make sure it doesn't get worse. It's almost impossible to tell exactly how bad it can get before 24 hours." He says then. I nod once more, standing and shaking his hand.

"Well thank you, very much. I'll stay here until he wakes up, and until his mom gets here, if that's okay." I say. Dr. Craig only smiles and nods.

"Of course. Just make sure he doesn't do anything, alright?" He says and I nod. With that the doctor smiles once more, and then leaves. I sigh, my smile fading as I sit back down. Who did this to him? He can't blame this on some clumsy accident; he was in the middle of the hallway and a butterknife was in his eye. So who did it? And more importantly... Will he tell me?

I walk into the hospital room with a small smile on my face and a box in my hands. Jack looks over at me and smiles as well, his left eye closed.

"Hey Mark." He says, watching as I walk over to his bedside.

"Hey Jack." I smile, bending down and kissing his forehead. "So, before anything, I have two questions." I say. He just nods, sitting up, and he looks at me. "How are you feeling?" I ask softly then, sitting on the edge of the bed. He sighs, putting a hand to his forehead.

"Swimmy." He chuckles. I chuckle too, but he soon continues. "No, seriously. I'm going okay. I'm hopped up on a lot of pain killers though, so everything's just a liiiittle swimmy." He says, smiling more. Yeah, I can tell. But I just nod and smile as well.

"Alright. Well then second question..." I wait a second, and he just tilts his head and looks up at me curiously. He looks like a confused puppy and it's adorable. But his one closed and slightly swollen eye just makes that all go away. I sigh, frowning slightly. "Who did this to you?" I ask then. Jack's smile instantly falls and he looks away, frowning as well.

"Um..." He sighs, shaking his head slowly. "Peter." Was his only reply. I look at him confused.

"Peter Stravinsky?" I ask skeptically and he nods, looking back at me.

"He wanted to get back at me for what I did to him. Guess he's handy with knives, huh?" He chuckles, and not for a second do I believe him. But I don't question it further. I was hoping with the drugs in his system he wouldn't be able to lie, but apparently I have no such luck.

"Alright." I whisper, taking his hand in my own. "Well, I got a gift for you." I said, giving him the box. He chuckles, kissing my cheek before opening the box and laughing.

"Really?" He asks, although I can tell he's happy. I shrug.

"It's supposed to make you feel better. Plus, even if you're gonna be blind for a couple days, you can still look badass." I say, taking the eyepatch and slipping it over his head. He positions it so it's just right and, like I said, he looks badass. He laughs and puts his arms around me, hugging me tightly.

"Thank you." He whispers. I smile, hugging back.

"You're welcome angel."
