Chapter 5 - Elijah

If looks could kill, I would have been dead by now.

When I thought it was a great idea to start working at the same coffee shop as Naomi, I was right. But apparently, she didn't appreciate that I was her new colleague and that she needed to teach me the ropes of being a great coffee maker and waiter. I bet she had never saw it coming. Just like I've wanted.

Truth is, I don't need a job. I am Job. See what I did there?

I know, I am lame.

But really I don't need work. I have money and I definitely don't need to add a coffee maker to my resume. I honestly rather not work. But I am doing this for Naomi. It's practically my only way to have a reason so I can spend time with her and near her. Especially since we're in summer.

It's a bit tricky to start working when you have no idea what you will be doing. Especially since I have never worked.
Well not exactly. I did work. I still do but I am a performer. I prefer to write music or perform at restaurants or at any place that needs someone to perform in my free time.
Therefore, I sing, I don't work. But apparently, I am willing to make some coffee if it means I can spend some time with Naomi.

"Are you going to keep on shooting daggers Nao?" Nao is what I used to call her. She used to love it. Now, I believe she wants to kill me. But I have decided that I am calling her Nao again from now on. She will always be Nao for me.

"It's Naomi. And yes until I know why you are here I am going to keep on shooting daggers. Why would they even hire you? You know nothing."

"You're going to teach me," I say matter-of-factly.

"Exactly. I don't get it. I don't believe the stupid bullshit that Joanne mentioned about opening another branch and needing new recruits."

I ignore everything she said and comment on the only thing that matters.
"Ah, she swears. Sunday school isn't doing the right job." I wink. I said job on purpose, just to get another reaction out of her. I love teasing her.
Plus, she had never sworn. Not on my watch at least. So I had to.

"Don't mock me or my faith, Job." She spits out while giving me a dirty look.

"I am not-"
I don't get the chance to finish my answer, Joanne makes an entrance and asks Naomi to train me on the coffee maker machine. As if it needed training.

After several attempts at trying to make one simple black coffee cup, I take a break before Naomi commits a crime.

As it turns out it's not as easy as I thought. I needed to be trained. It's not easy to make coffee even when the machine is making it for you. Apparently, I am a slow-ass learner and Naomi isn't exactly being patient with me. I feel like she wants to get rid of me so she is making it harder than it is. Who am I kidding of course she doesn't want me near her.

I am not leaving this job until I am back on her good books. But she is making it harder by the second.

"Will you slow down a bit?" I said after a several attempts to catch up with her explanations.

"I thought you didn't need training as this is very easy to do."

"I obviously need training." I admit, defeated.

She slows down, and she takes her time while explaining which coffee beans to use in which machine and all the buttons that we are supposed to touch. No wonder I didn't understand a thing, the machine buttons are in Portuguese.

After few moments, during my first attempt at making coffee, Naomi asks "Why are you here, Job?"

"I want to work, they had a vacancy. I seized the opportunity." I answer, acting stupid.

"As if. You can grab your guitar and sing anywhere else. You don't have to make coffee. You know what I mean. Not only in this coffee shop, Why are you here, here? Why are you back after so long?" She lets out a big sigh.

"Nao, I-" I try to explain but I stop. She isn't ready. She isn't ready to listen and she isn't ready yet to understand why I left. I know I hurt her. I know I am hurting her. I know she prefers that I go away. But I am selfish. I have always been selfish when it comes to her and I need her in my life. I have made my peace with this fact. So until she is ready, I won't explain anything. I will let her roast me with her words.

When she realizes that I won't answer, she speaks disappointed, "Forget it, I don't care. As long as you won't hurt me again or anyone I care about, I don't care why you're here. I shouldn't. Just don't make me regret anything. I don't want to do that again."

871 words.
