Chapter 8: The First Sign
I was standing in the middle of an amusement park. I heard the music and the sound of roller coasters, but no one was here. I was completely alone. Well not completely.
"Sam, what are we doing here?" I asked him.
"What you need can be found
Where the roller coasters sound,
When you need to find something important
It will always, somehow, come around." I raised my eyebrow, looking at my surroundings, then turned back to Sam.
"What are y-" I noticed that Sam was gone.
"Sam?" I asked looking around. Normally we'd do something before he told me the riddle, but this time he just told me and disappeared. Maybe something happened to him. I walked around, trying to see what would happen. I heard a bunch of clatter and carefully hid behind a few games. I peered around the corner and saw a few of Cane's henchmen. 'Maybe that's why he left so soon' I told myself. I saw Cane's men walking into some scary ride. Of course I'd been on that ride thousands of times and it was never scary. 'What are they doing?' I asked myself. I decided to follow them, maybe I could find something. When I stepped foot on the ride, I looked at my hands as they started disappearing. 'Umm excuse me! What's happening?' I suddenly started waking up. 'No! I have to find out what they are looking for!' I thought then I woke up.

For once it was daylight, when I woke up from passing out. I looked around the room. I was back in Jay's old room, back at his parents house. I laid there for a few minutes thinking about what happened in my dream. Something felt off. Sam was different. And not a good different. I don't know what it was, probably those men that were in my dream, but what I do know is that it was scary. And I'm glad that I'm not doing this alone. I had been so deep in my own world that I didn't remember even sitting up, or the four people that walked into the room that I was staying in. I looked at Toby and smiled until Edna spoke.
"I'm so glad you're awake dear, let me go get you some medicine" she said then stepped out. It was silent for a few minutes. I didn't know whether it was because we were all just thinking about different things or if it was because the four of us started drifting apart. I sure hoped that it wasn't the latter. The silence was broken when Connor spoke up.
"What happened?" I looked up at him confused.
"In your dream" he said, making my confusion disappear.
"I was at an amusement park. Sam was there. It was kinda strange, because he didn't have any emotion like he did in the ones before" I told them, looking between each one as I spoke.
"What did he say?" Asked Riley. I looked at him.
"The riddle, if that's what you meant, was 'What you need can be found
Where the roller coasters sound,
When you need to find something important
It will always, somehow, come around.' It was weird cause after he said that, he just vanished. Then after he vanished I heard some men talking. Cane's men. They went into some not-so-scary ride and I followed them. That's when I started to wake up" I finished.
"Maybe there's an easy explanation for Sam's uneasiness" I jumped as Sensei entered the room.
"What do you mean, Sensei?" I asked. He walked over and stood by Toby, who hadn't said a word since I woke up.
"In your first dream, Sam was very playful, was he not?" I looked down, confused.
"He was" I paused, then looked back up at Sensei, "but what does that have to do with anything?" I asked.
"I have a terrible feeling that my students and your friends aren't the only ones we'll be saving" Sensei said, then walked out. I shot a confused glance to the three boys in the room.
"What is he talking about?" I asked.
"Sam's been captured. That's what he's talking about" Toby said, kinda rudely, as he stood up.
"Toby are you ok?" I asked standing up as well.
"The first thing you say when I wake up is something rude. What's wrong with you?" I asked, a little angry.
"Nothing is wrong with me" he replied just as angry. He then walked out of the room. I watched him leave then looked at the other two who looked just as surprised as me.
"What is wrong with that boy?" I asked myself. Riley shook his head.
"I don't know. Ever since he went for a walk by himself he's been acting like that" I looked at Riley.
"Why didn't anyone go with him?" I asked. Connor shrugged his shoulders.
"He said he needed to be alone" I looked at the door Toby just walked out of.
"I hope he's ok"

Out in the living room, our team made a game plan.
"Alright so I have a feeling that Cane's men will be at the park, so we need to be ready" I told them.
For the next thirty minutes we decided on who was going first and who would keep lookout.
"Ok so Connor, Riley you two will keep lookout. Nicole, Timber you two will look down one corridor and me, Renee, and Toby will go down the other" as I was about to stand up, Renee spoke.
"Can I go alone?" She asked. I stared at her.
"Renee I know you don't like help, but if we go in this separately, none of the others will know if anyone gets hurt" I told her. She frowned causing me to sigh.
"Why can't she go alone, she can take care of herself" said a familiar voice.
"I know she can take care of herself, Toby, but I'm just worried that she'll get hurt and no one will know" he rolled his eyes. He stood up from his leaning position on the wall and walked over to me.
"I say she goes alone" he said, his face uncomfortably close to mine. I could see Connor stand up in my peripheral vision. He was always protective of me.
"Toby let's think this through" Toby looked at his brother, frown on his face.
"Why should we? Don't you guys know she can handle herself?" He said, raising his voice a little.
"We know she can handle herself, but we need every member of our team" I told him, keeping my voice lower.
"Oh so we're a team now?" Toby asked, still raising his voice. I sighed. He was making me upset.
"Yes, Toby, we've always been a team" Nicole joined in. He looked at her, angry.
"A team? A team! Hah we're just teenagers who think they know what they're doing, but we don't" he said looking at me. I stared at him with concern.
"Toby..." I started.
"No, you know what Kirsten, I don't think this is working out" he told me.
I just stared at him, confused.
"Toby what's wrong with you?" I said getting angry as tears welled up in my eyes.
"Nothing, but I'm better now that we're not together" he said. I walked backwards slowly as tears fell down my cheeks. I could see the sparkle return in his eyes. A look of sadness and recognition on his face.
I turned around and walked towards the door.
"Kirsten...I" he started but I cut him off.
"Guys let's just go, without Toby" I told them and walked out the door to the van. I could hear the others walk out.
"You messed up bro" I could hear Riley say.
"Yeah, we'll see you later" Connor.
I ignored the others the entire way there. Tears continued to stream down my face. 'After a year and five months he just ends things. After all of the things we've been through'.
I felt an arm wrap around me. I turned my head to see Renee. I smiled.
"He doesn't deserve you" she told me.
"And I kinda feel like I'm the one to blame for him breaking up with you" I stared at her.
"No, don't say that. Its not your fault. He obviously felt like that for awhile" I said looking at the chair in front of me. I could feel her stare burn into the side of my head.
I looked out the window as the sun started to set. It was gonna be a clear night tonight. 'If only Toby were here to enjoy it with me'.
I felt Renee stand up and heard her walk back to her seat. I continued to look at the setting sun, wondering if what Toby had said was true.
Toby's POV
I sat in Jay's old room on the bed, with my head in my hands. I still can't believe what happened. Its like something was taking over me. When I saw her crying, it's like that simple thing just snapped me out of whatever I was in.
I stared out the window. The clear night sky was beautiful. I wish I was with her to enjoy it.
'But you hate her remember?' There it was again. That wretched voice.
'You hate her guts' I put my hands over my ears, but that did nothing to get the voice out of my head.
"No I don't now leave me alone" I yelled to the voice in my head.
Little did I know that Edna was watching me from the doorway.
