Reunion
Third person POV
Kageyama stuffed his earbuds in his pocket.
The train would stop any moment now, and he'd finally be home.
Though he wasn't particularly looking forward to an obnoxious crowd of endearing idiots, six months was almost enough to make him miss the energy.
Almost.
Thank god Sakusa-san would be there to bring some semblance of calm to the bunch; he totally owed him for this.
Oh god, they probably made signs. With glitter. And glue. Meaning Bokuto will have glitter in his hair. Poor Akaashi.
A small smile spread across Kageyama's face. his cheeks reddened as he chuckled to himself.
Poor, poor Akaashi.
"We have arrived at Osaka Station. When the train has fully stopped and the doors open, walk quickly to the exit. Thank you for riding with us." The train slowed and the blur of lights and shapes outside the windows became more detailed.
"Tch."
Why did the train have to be so crowded today. It's 1:30pm on a Wednesday. Guess I'll just wait for others to get off.
Kageyama clicked the power button on his phone, illuminating his screen. Staring back at him was a memory captured almost a year ago.
~flashback~
"Come on Kageyama! You're so slow we'll never make it!"
"Oh yeah? Fine, let's race."
"Oh it's on! I'll win, no problem."
"Don't be so sure." With that, Kageyama dashed ahead of the orange-haired guy, skipping steps as he went.
Right on his heels, panting and wheezing, was his best friend.
Kageyama put everything he had into the sprint up the hill, throwing his arms and quickening his feet.
While Hinata was right behind him, he didn't seem to be gaining any distance.
Kageyama smirked.
He was going to win.
"AAAUUUGGGGHHHHH!!"
An orange blur appeared on his right, making him grit his teeth.
This dumbass thinks he can win a foot race by screaming.
"AAAUUUGGGGHHHHH!!"
Two can play at that game.
They reached the peak, arms flailing, hearts pounding, gasping for air.
"Ha! . . . I . . . beat you," Hinata panted, leaning over with his hands on his knees.
"In . . . your . . . dreams, dumbass," Kageyama shot back, though his shortness of breath took the edge off of his retort.
"Fine. It was a tie," Hinata conceded.
"Fine, whatever."
"Kageyama look! The flowers are so pretty! The whole garden is in bloom. Aren't you glad we came today?" Hinata bounced over to a group of pink flowers, smiling giddily.
"Yeah, they are," Kageyama mumbled. "Though you're prettier."
Wait shit. Did I say that out loud? There's no way he heard that.
"Let's take a picture so we can always remember today!" Hinata suggested.
Guess not.
"Okay. Let me take it. Your arms are too short," Kageyama teased, taking out his phone.
"I feel like that was a backhanded insult at my height, but fine. Let's get the flowers in the background." Hinata pouted for a moment and then slid in next to Kageyama, smiling wide.
"Okay, 1, 2 , 3." Kageyama slid his arm around Hinata's shoulders and smiled, clicking the capture button.
"I'll take a few," Kageyama said, and Hinata nodded, putting up his hand in a peace sign.
Kageyama snapped two more.
"Last one," Kageyama told Hinata.
Hinata smiled, rivaling the sun in his radiance.
In a split second, the raven-haired man turned his head, pecking the smaller on the cheek while taking the picture.
Kageyama quickly pulled away, his cheeks turning crimson.
"Ka-Kageyama, what was that for?!" Hinata exclaimed, turning to face his friend.
Kageyama just stood there, his face a tomato, hands desperately trying to hide his embarrassment.
"Hey! I asked you a question and it's only fair if you answer. You can't just kiss me and not give an explanation! Also you got that on camera!? What are you gonna do with that, huh?" Hinata was yelling now. "Kageyama Tobio answer me, for fuck's sake!"
"Hinata, are you done yelling," Kageyama whispered.
Hinata's eyes widened and his mouth hung open. His whole body froze. Never had he heard his friend sound so . . . scared. He sounded vulnerable, petrified, hurt even.
"Y-yeah." Hinata didn't trust himself to say any more.
A deep sigh escaped the taller's lips has he pivoted to face his friend.
"I'm sorry. i don't know what I was thinking. Guess I wasn't..."
Hinata waited patiently, waiting for more, searching Kageyama's face for a clue to his feelings.
Kageyama's nose scrunched up as he furrowed his eyebrows. His mouth in the shape of a taught grimace.
"I . . . I kissed you because . . . because . . . because I like you. I have for a while. Years. You've smiled at me a million times before, and today wasn't out of the ordinary. I don't know what came over me. You just, you looked so happy, so carefree, so adorable. I couldn't hold back. You . . . you mean a lot to me, no matter how much I call you 'dumbass' or 'moron' or 'idiot'. i'm so bad at like, explaining stuff, but in the moment it was like 'GWAH!' I didn't want to ruin our friendship but we'll both start our new work schedules soon so i won't get to see you much, if at all so I guess I wanted to take my chance." Kageyama blushed even more intensely, staring at his feet.
"O-oh . . . " Hinata whispered.
"So . . . so-sorry!" Kageyama shouted, bowing his head slightly and looking at the ground.
"No! It's okay, really. I'm not mad, just . . . surprised. never thought you'd actually like me back, much less do anything about it or confess," Hinata answered, trying to make his friend feel better.
Kageyama's head jerked upward. "Wait . . . did you-"
"Mhm mhm! I like you too dumbass!" Hinata giggled and gave Kageyama his blinding smile.
Kageyama's mouth hung open.
"Hinata, can I hug you?"
"Yeah, of course!"
Kageyama pulled the smaller into a tight embrace, burying his face in Hinata's hair.
The pair stood there for a while comfortably in the other's arms as birds chirped around them, flowers danced in the breeze, and the sun radiated its warmth.
"So, did you want to try going out? I know we'll be busy but I can make time, and it doesn't have to be super serious. We could just facetime and maybe grab lunch together occasionally." Kageyama rubbed his neck.
"Really? I'd love that!! Yes, let's do it!" Hinata beamed, jumping up and down.
"Alright alright, calm down silly," Kageyama snickered.
~
The passed year had been hard with Hinata on the MSBY Black Jackals and himself playing for Japan, they hadn't got much time together. The train ride from Tokyo to Osaka was 2 1/2 hours itself, and then there is their schedules to work out. And while Kageyama was overseas, physical contact was impossible.
But it would be okay. He would be home and he had a whole week before he had to return to Tokyo.
Plenty of time to spend with his amazing, talented, understanding, and adorable boyfriend. Who also happened to be a dense, childish, knucklehead that got excited way too easily and had enough energy to power all of Tokyo.
Regardless, quality time with his best friend and lover was the least he could do after being so far away and so busy for half a year.
Someone tapped Kageyama on the shoulder.
"Uh, sir, are you going to get off?" a woman asked.
Kageyama stared at her for a good 30 seconds, trying to process the words.
"oh, uh, yeah, thank you ma'am," Kageyama muttered, bowing his head quickly and then darting from his seat and out the doors onto the platform.
Now, where are those -
"KAGEYAMA"
"TOBIO-KUN"
"KAYGEYAMA"
Ah, there.
Kageyama turned to see three extremely amused young men and one extremely unamused young man (who looked as though he might throw up) standing 5 meters away.
With bright, glittery, colorful signs of course.
He rolled his eyes and quickly stalked over to the group, waving his hands in a "calm down" motion.
Before he could do much else, a streak of orange blazed toward him and he instinctively dropped his bag, catching his beloved boyfriend in his arms.
"Kageyama I missed youuuu!" Hinata exclaimed, laughing and looking up at Kageyama.
Kageyama couldn't help but laugh too.
"I missed you too you moron."
And just like that, the dark-haired man was crying.
"Ka-kageyama? Babe what's wrong?" Hinata asked, his voice quivering a bit.
"I . . . nothing darling, everything's perfect. I don't know why I . . ."
"Shh, it's okay. You're here now.' Hinata wiped his boyfriend's cheeks with his thumbs.
Kageyama just pulled Hinata closer, burying his head in the latter's hair and pushing his head into his own chest.
"Do you wanna say hi to the others?" Hinata asked after a minute.
"Not really, rather stay here. But I will since they came here for me." Kageyama smiled and pulled away.
"Hi Miya-san, hey Bokuto, hello Sakusa-san. Thank you all for coming." Kageyama waved awkwardly.
Bokuto came up and clapped the younger on the shoulder greeting him with a grin. "Hey Kageyama, how was the United States, huh? Did you get to play with the pros? How was the food? Did you get to see their cool Liberty Lady or whatever that statue's called?"
"Hey! I am a pro!" Kageyama shot back, narrowing his eyebrows at the spikey-haired man.
"Now, now Bokuto, give the man some space. No need to bombard him with yer questions. Now Tobio-kun, tell me, did ya find yerself a cute American boy? It's okay I wo-"
"What the hell Miya-san!? How can you say that? I have someone perfect right here." Kageyama glared at the blonde.
"I'm joking, I'm joking. My little wing spiker here is doing just fine. Been ecstatic for weeks waiting for ya." Atsumu chuckled.
"Well it's not funny. I see you're still an asshole. And you may be setting to him, but Hinata's still mine," Kageyama declared, pulling Hinata closer.
"Yeah, yeah, I know. All jokes aside, welcome back Tobio-kun. Good to see ya."
Kageyama nodded and turned to Sakusa.
"Thanks Sakusa-san. I know you hate crowds and dealing with these three idiots is tiring."
"Yeah, yeah. You owe me. I almost backed out when Bokuto said he was bringing a sign," Sakusa deadpanned.
Kageyama looked over to Bokuto.
Sure enough, his hair shone with silver sparkles.
Poor Akaashi. I wonder how he puts up with him sometimes. Then again, I have the sun as a person for a boyfriend so . . . oh what have Akaashi, Sakusa-san and I gotten ourselves into.
"Okay you all, let's get home. I need a nap," Kageyama announced, ushering the group toward the exit.
"Can I join you in the nap?" Hinata whispered.
"I was planning on it darling." Kageyama smiled and pecked his boyfriend on the lips, then grabbed Hinata's hand, twirling his thumb across his hand.
The orange-haired man gave the taller's hand a little squeeze.
Kageyama squeezed back, beaming with delight.
"I love you, Shoyo darling," Kageyama whispered.
I really am the luckiest man in the world.
The End~
