The morning was spent packing bags, loading trunks, and finally saying goodbye.
The adults were hanging around the yard, hugging and shedding tears. A few of the kids were playing while they still could, and others were in the car, shouting at everyone else to hurry up so they could go home. One of the latter children was Anthony, just saying.
Stacey finally came out of the house, dragging a suitcase behind her. I walked up to her one last time.
"Let me take this," I said, grabbing her suitcase. Stacey rolled her eyes, but smiled and let me take it.
We slowly walked to her family's car, neither of us sure of what to say. When we arrived at the open trunk of their van, I pushed Stacey's suitcase inside. She shut the door and turned to face me.
"I guess this is goodbye."
"I guess it is," I said sadly.
Stacey looked around. We were behind the vehicle where no one could see us. She turned to face me again.
"You'll text me everyday, right?"
"Duh."
She laughed lightly. "And you'll call sometimes?"
"You know you can start conversations too, right?"
"Yeah." She laughed again. "Well this has been fun."
"Yeah." I bit my lip. "I'm not sure I want to go back to Ohio."
"Why not?"
"Well, I just had lots of fun here."
"Is there something wrong with Ohio?" she quizzed.
"No, of course not. Why?"
"No reason." She looked at the ground.
"The only thing wrong with Ohio is that you're not there," I said.
Stacey opened her mouth to say something, but was cut off by my mother's voice calling, "Logan?"
"I have to go," I said.
Stacey looked at me sadly. I stepped forward and hugged her tightly, giving her a soft kiss on the lips. She hugged me back desperately.
When I released her, I saw that there were tears in her eyes.
She sniffled. "I'm not ready for this."
"Hey," I said, "Just one year. You can do it, right?"
"Yeah, I suppose so."
She sounded uncertain. I was about to respond when my mom's voice called me again.
"I'm sorry," I said.
"Goodbye, Logan."
"Goodbye." It took everything I had not to choke on those words before I turned away and hopped inside of my own family's vehicle.
"There you are!" Mom said. "Buckle up! We've got a long drive ahead of us!"
I took my spot in the backseat with Anna and Presley and we started to back out. Mom kept waving to everyone outside through the window. I tried to refrain from looking, but my eyes landed on Stacey for the last time for a while and I felt a pang in my heart at the sight of her. She probably couldn't see me very well through the tinted windows, but I was able to see her bright blue eyes one last time before we disappeared around the corner. That's it. She was gone.
I was gone.
My phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out to see a text from Stacey.
I miss you, Loganberry.
I noticed my battery was running low, so I was about to ask Mom to pass me the charger when Stacey sent another text that captured my attention.
I found something out last night but I couldn't figure out how to tell you. I don't want to you to get your hopes up.... But we might be moving to Ohio.
What happened next was like a smack in the face. It was like fate snuck up and pantsed me in front of the school. The seemingly simple problem would turn out to be a very big issue in the future, but I didn't know it. All I felt was anger.
My phone died.
