As Gimli stepped forward, Legolas suddenly threw forward a hand to block him. "Perhaps it is best for me to see him first, and explain the situation," Legolas suggested.

"All right, laddie. Go on in," Gimli agreed.

So Legolas gathered his wits and bravery about him, and entered.

Tauriel heard a soft knocking on her door. "Mae, please," she sighed. For the past few months, Maethel had been taking care of her as best she could. She tried to get Tauriel to eat, to go train with her, whatever she could possibly think of. After countless fruitless attempts, Maethel had succumbed to pleading with Tauriel to do things, to do anything. But still, she had come away from Tauriel's door every night empty handed and heavy-hearted.

"It's me."

Tauriel's heart nearly jumped out of her chest. She sat up slowly at the voice, her face bone-white.

"L-Legolas?"

Her heart beat so fast and hard she was sure everyone in Valinor could hear her.

Slowly, slowly, the knob began to turn.
