Chapter 12: You Deserve Death
Legolas was left alone for the next few months. He saw no one and spoke to no one. At first he didn't care, he welcomed the silence.
But soon he began to feel as if he was losing his mind. He had spent most of his time grieving, yet now, his grief had turned to rage. He became restless, he never slept, he thought that he could hear voices in his head, voices of those long lost.
Whenever he'd ever felt anger or grief he had always been able to deal with it. Usually by going out by himself. He had to move. He couldn't just stay in one place.
He had to kill something.
Legolas sprang to his feet and quickly shook the thought away.
He didn't need to kill anything. There was already enough death in the world.
But it had always helped him in the past. To get control...
"No!"
Legolas slammed his fist against the cell wall.
If Sauron was trying to drive him into insanity, he was succeeding.
Without Pippin to calm him, to reassure him that things could one day be better... He was lost.
He sighed and returned to his spot in the corner. He sat down and closed his eyes.
I swear I'm losing my mind.

As much as Sauron enjoyed the elf's suffering, he still had to focus on his goal; which was bringing the monster out of Legolas. The elf was no use to him, it was what Sauron had created in him that he wanted.
All he had to do was lure the beast out.
The Mouth understood perfectly well what Sauron had in mind. He went down to the dungeon to carry out what his master had ordered.
The Mouth had been enjoying himself for the last few months. Amarth still hadn't returned from whatever it was Sauron had sent him to do, however The Mouth was still annoyed that Sauron hadn't told him what it was.
He was also glad that the halfling had finally been killed, and there was nothing he'd enjoyed more than watching Legolas slowly slip into madness.
He remembered when Legolas had first come to Mordor. He hadn't been Sauron's messenger then, but he had still been in charge of making the elf wish he that he was dead.
It had been fun then, hearing the young elf's screams and cries for mercy, but now his only response to pain were the death glares he gave to anyone who hurt him.
The first time The Mouth had heard Legolas scream since his return had been when the halfling died. He wouldn't admit it but the elf's cries had nerved him.
He shook the thoughts off. He had important business to attend to.
He approached Legolas' cell and looked through the bars. The elf sat in a corner with his knees drawn up against his chest and his arms folded over them. The faint light from the torch that The Mouth held illuminated the look of pure hatred on the elf's face.
The Mouth decided to get straight to the point.
"It's a shame about your little friend. He seemed very kind, it is a pity that you couldn't save him."
Legolas only continued to glare.
"I realised that you were never told how he was killed. It seems unfair to keep the truth from you."
He searched for any other sign of emotion from the elf, but there was nothing but hate.
"Your hobbit friend was killed by someone you once traveled with. I'm sure you'll remember him."
There was a brief look of confusion from Legolas but it passed quickly.
The Mouth gestured for the two orcs behind him to restrain Legolas. The Mouth knew that if he got the chance he would kill them all.
The orcs entered and Legolas immediately moved to defend himself. Fortunately for the Mouth the orcs were able to restrain him before he could do anything.
Once he was contained two more orcs came in with their prisoner. Legolas stopped struggling against the orcs when he saw who they carried.
"You remember Boromir right Legolas? He's the one who killed your halfing friend."
Different emotions passed over Legolas' face: shock, confusion, pain, disbelief, grief, and finally anger.
His hands clenched into fists. The orcs glanced at each other nervously, they had never seen such rage in anyone before.
"You're lying." he glared at The Mouth whose only reply was a grin. He turned towards Boromir who hung limply in the orc's grasp.
"Tell him Boromir," The Mouth nodded his head towards Legolas, "Tell him who killed the halfling."
Boromir looked desperately in the elf's direction.
"Legolas," his voice trembled as he spoke, "I never wanted to-"
"Did you kill him?"
Boromir jumped at the sound of Legolas' voice. Every word he said made him feel like he was being stabbed.
"I didn't want to I-I tried to stop them."
"DID YOU KILL HIM?!"
His voice startled all of them. The orcs almost lost their grips on their prisoners.
Boromir looked down at the floor with tears in his eyes.
His body shook as he met Legolas' gaze and said, "Yes."
Legolas froze. His world started swaying, it couldn't be true....
The Mouth signaled for the orcs to release them. The orcs let go of Legolas who stood in a daze. Boromir was dropped to the floor.
"I'll leave you two here for now. Hopefully you can come up with some sort of apology Boromir."
The Mouth smiled and walked out of the cell. The door slammed shut behind them.
Boromir looked at the door and then back at Legolas, but the elf was no longer in his catatonic state. Now his eyes were blazed with blue fire. His hands were clenched into fists so tight that they began to bleed.
His whole body shook with uncontrollable rage, all of which was directed at the man who lay before him.

Boromir would have backed away if he could, but there was nowhere to go. Legolas slowly began to move forward.
"Legolas, please! I didn't want to kill him! I had no choice!"
"You did have a choice! You should have ended your own life! You deserve nothing but death!"
Pain exploded in Boromir's jaw as Legolas' fist slammed into his face. Before he could move to defend himself Legolas punched him in the stomach, knocking the breath out of him.
Boromir had no time to prepare himself for Legolas' next blow, which was a hard kick in the ribs.
Legolas grabbed him by the shoulders and lifted him up, he shoved him against the wall and glared at him with all the hatred and anger that had built up inside of him.
Boromir gave a desperate kick to elf's stomach. It worked, not enough to make him double over but enough to loosen his grip.
As Boromir fell Legolas immediately went back in for another blow, this one would end his life.
Boromir knew he had one last chance of avoiding death. With all the strength he could manage he shouted, "They were going to kill my brother!"
Boromir didn't know what reaction he would get from the elf, but it surprised him when he stopped, blinked, and asked, "What?"
Boromir swallowed before continuing, "Sauron- made me choose, between killing my brother, or killing Pippin. "I- I didn't want to kill either of them, but- I couldn't lose my brother."
Boromir waited for the final blow to come at any moment, but Legolas just stared at him blankly.
"He was going to make you kill your brother?"
Shocked at the soft tone of his voice, and by the sorrow and confusion that had replaced Legolas' anger, Boromir could only nod.
Legolas looked down at the floor. Unseen memories flashed through the elf's mind.
When Legolas looked up again Boromir was shocked to see tears in his eyes.
"Where is your brother?" He asked quietly.
"They have him in another cell."
Legolas was about to say something but then he stopped. He turned and walked to the other side of the cell. He stood there for awhile with his back to Boromir.
The man's face was bleeding. His ribs were bruised and he was pretty sure his right arm was broken. But in his mind, he deserved every single thing that had happened to him.
When Legolas turned back to him the tears were gone, his expression had returned to grief and anger.
"Before Pippin died he asked me to forgive someone. I did not know who it was until now."
Boromir's eyes began to fill with tears. He still remembered when Pippin had looked up at him and had said the three words Boromir had longed to hear from his friends.
"Did you ask Pippin for his forgiveness?"
Boromir nodded, trying desperately to hold back tears.
"Did he forgive you?"
"Yes. He did."
Boromir lowered his head again. The tears began to run down his face.
Legolas said nothing else. He turned back to his corner and sat down. Without looking at Boromir he said, "You did have another choice Boromir. That sword didn't have to go through Pippin or your brother."
Boromir looked at him in confusion. Before he could ask what he meant Legolas turned to him and said, "I would have brought death to myself before I would even dream of hurting someone I care about."
With that Legolas didn't speak another word for the rest of the night.
And Boromir lay alone on the cold floor, wishing he was dead.
