34. Blindspot
"Corey..." Allison's voice fades in and out. "Corey, can you hear me?"
Suddenly, as if on cue, I jolt awake, eyes wide with confusion. My mind works as I remember everything that had happened in the past 24 hours, it all ending with my memory of blacking out and of Deucalion stealing my visions. He knew what was coming and what to expect; there was nothing that could stop him now.
"No," I say quickly, trying to get on my feet, to move. I needed to do something now. "No, no. This isn't happening-"
"Corey." I feel two hands press against my chest, but not forcefully. It was a soft gesture to just keep me down on the floor rather than standing. It was then I saw that it was Allison. "You aren't going anywhere. You just had a seizure and then passed out-"
"I have to stop him," I breathe, shaking my head. It was like my mind was stuck on the fact that I basically changed whatever was supposed to happen; I had to stop Deucalion from changing it. "I can't let him find her-"
Lydia speaks this time, and that was when I realized that she was still kneeling there besides Allison, her fishtail braid starting to fall out. "Corey, what are you talking about?"
"When I was stuck there," I look over at the ice tub behind me. "Jennifer was there telling me things about my ability, but it wasn't really her. She told me that my abilities are basically a curse; that I have the power to change what happens. I have the capability of deciding what path to take. She told me that I couldn't ever let anyone know what I see in the future or to try and change it, and now Deucalion knows. Whatever I just saw in the future, he knows it now, and now that future isn't a reality. He's going to change it-"
"Slow down," Allison says, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "You sound like a crazy person."
"I get it," Lydia nods, her eyes distant. "It's basically what common time travel movies state. Technically, if you can see the future and you try and change it, the future doesn't exist anymore. What he's saying is that whatever he just saw, before Deucalion took the memory away, isn't the future anymore since Deucalion is going to try and change that future."
"We're on a different path," I say, glad that Lydia was on the same page as me. Never in my life have I been so glad that she was such a smart girl. "Whatever gets messed up in the timeline now, the universe will find balance for. It will equal out whatever was supposed to happen."
Allison sighs, still confused, but I could tell that it was starting to make some sense in her mind. "Okay, so what the timeline is going to change? You still just had a seizure, Corey-"
"I'm with Allison," Lydia nods, looking back at me. "You're not up to speed to go out there."
"You two don't get it," I say, attempting to stand once again. "I have to make this right. Deucalion stole those visions from me, so it's my responsibility."
Allison and Lydia look over at one another, communicating but not speaking. I imagined them speaking inside of my mind, but then Allison was looking up at me, standing now as well as Lydia. "I'm going with you."
"What about your dad?" I ask, watching Allison grab the dagger lying on the table behind her and sticking it into her boot.
She looks back at me. "Stiles went to go find the parents, along with Isaac."
"I would go, but I have to meet Aiden at the loft," Lydia says, triggering the reminder inside of me that Kali was coming for Derek tonight. That thought led to the reminder of Boyd dying, it being my fault. I tried to shake it away.
"I can go help them find the parents," I hear Deaton say behind us, causing all of us to turn and look at him. He nods at us before I look back at Allison, sighing.
"Do you even know where to find Deucalion?" Allison asks me. My hand reaches up to the back of my neck, feeling little bumps there where his claws had been, reminding myself of what I had seen before he had done that to me. There was a strange old building that everything had taken place in, but then I remembered something that I heard Derek say.
"The distillery?"
"The distillery," I say, remembering exactly that Derek had said that. "That's where they are."
Something triggers behind Allison's eyes, and I knew then that she knew where that was. "I know where that is. Come on."
We start to head out of the clinic before I hear Lydia's voice call after us. I didn't think much of it until I realized how wavered it sounded, like she had a feeling that something bad was coming.
"Be careful."
---------
"I don't like this," Allison says as she looks out of the window, watching the storm grow worse by the second. I knew that this storm had to be linked to Jennifer somehow, and I hated it. I hated that I knew that Isaac, Stiles, and now Deaton were going to be wandering out in it to find the parents, and I hated that Allison was trying her best to drive through it.
I honestly just hated Jennifer.
"Are we almost there?" I ask, leaning forwards to look out of the window myself. I see leaves and dust smack against the window as Allison struggled to see through it all, occasionally even swerving. It made me nervous.
Allison nods her head. "We should be. I think it's just around this corner, but I can barely see anything to tell."
The car is filled with that unspoken sort of silence as the storm roars from outside. There were a thousand things I wanted to tell Allison, but I couldn't focus on one thing. For some reason, it's felt like ages since I've really talked to her, or even seen her for that matter. I missed those calm nights at her house when I was lying there beside her and I miss listening to her ramble on and on about something that didn't really matter while I admired the lines on her forehead that were created when she was angry. She would always yell at me for staring, but I couldn't help it.
"Do you think they'll find them?" Allison says suddenly, breaking my scattered thoughts. I look back over at her, seeing that she was still staring intensely at the road. "Our parents."
"They're going to be okay," I assure her, knowing that they would be. Well, at least I thought that they would be if what I had seen earlier tonight was still true. "Stiles is probably already there getting them out."
"Why won't he answer my texts then?" Allison says, getting worried. She had a right to be, but I hated seeing her like that.
I motion towards the storm. "I'm sure he doesn't have service. It's going to be okay."
Allison nods her head before changing the topic. "I think there's a dagger in the backseat. You should grab it just in case-"
"It's not like I know how to use it," I say, shaking my head. I regretted not knowing more self defense.
She glances over at me before back to the road. "Please just take it to make me feel better about this, because right now, I'm about to throw up from nerves and walking into the snake pit is going to make it worse."
"Alright," I smile faintly before leaning back and grabbing the dagger she was talking about, sticking it into the belt of my jeans. "Promise me that if we make it out of this that you'll teach me how to fight."
Allison laughs then, and that made me feel better about all of this. "Deal. I'd sleep better at night knowing that you wouldn't need me all of the time to save your ass."
I was going to argue, but hell, she was right. She's saved my ass almost every single time I got into trouble, and I was forever grateful for that and for her. I wouldn't be here without her.
The car halts just then, the tires spinning in the loose dirt. I grab the door handle to hold on before I look over at her, not saying anything, just waiting for her to confirm what I was thinking. She looks over at me before clenching her jaw, the thing she always did when she was nervous but ready to fight.
"I guess let's kick some ass."
I would have smiled, but the nerves from this situation kept me from doing so. I gulp before getting out of the car, having to fight the wind to get my door open. Allison's hair blows in her face as she grabs something out of the back, but I couldn't see what it was with the dust blowing in my face. We both finally start to head towards the big building, which was what I recognized as the distillery. It was larger than I had thought, but for sure the same thing I had seen in my vision.
Allison and I walk beside one another, feeling the weight of the world on our shoulders. I even feel her hand brush across mine for a moment, almost as if she was trying to reassure me of this, but I was more nervous than ever. When we finally made it to the building and stepped inside, I could already tell that everything was wrong.
First of all, Jade was here. She wasn't here before in my vision, and now here she was, standing besides Scott and Deucalion. They were on the opposite end of the building as Jennifer and Derek were closer to us, clearly ready to fight. We made it just before everything started to go down, and I wasn't sure if I was happy or sad about that.
Everyone looks back at Allison and I, eyebrows narrowed. Jennifer was the first to speak, that snarky tone of hers making me wish she was already dead. "What in the hell are you two doing here?"
I didn't know how to put it into words, so I spoke to Deucalion directly. "Deucalion, listen to me. You can't try and change what's going to happen; you can't change the time line-"
"What is he talking about?" Jennifer interrupts me before her face goes cold, her snake eyes meeting my own. "I knew something was up with you the moment I got here. You're a seer; a vision seeker. Aren't you?"
Her fists clench then, and I knew that this was going to be one of those universe balance things. Allison reaches into her back pocket then, pulling out the weapon that she must have grabbed earlier that I couldn't see. Her hands spin as she holds out a long piece of chain, something I had yet to witness her using.
Jennifer stares at Allison as Deucalion speaks next. "I'm not letting her win this. I'm going to change what is supposed to happen here today, and you can't stop me."
I didn't blame him. The vision of mine ended with Jennifer slamming his head onto the ground multiple times while his tongue hung out of his mouth, blood staining the concrete. I knew that Deucalion was supposed to die here today, but he was going to change that. He wouldn't let her win. And honestly, I didn't want her to either. A part of me wanted Deucalion to change what is supposed to happen, but another part of me was afraid of the unknown timeline. I didn't want something worse to happen.
"He knows-" Jennifer cuts off, looking back at Deucalion before back at me, fire in her eyes. "I'm going to kill you after I kill the rest of them!"
Allison takes a step in front of me, almost as if she was daring Jennifer to try. But I knew that even Allison didn't stand a chance against Jennifer; she couldn't overpower her. It looks as if Jennifer is about to come at me before the lighting around us starts to turn into a soft yellow, indicating that the eclipse was happening.
Jennifer smirks at all of us, and then something almost magical happens. Her face went from completely normal to slashed and pale in just a few seconds, just like it had when I had seen it in the elevator back at the hospital. Her white eyes flick towards Deucalion first before she's going at him, but Jade steps in front of him before she gets to him.
Jade was human now, but I could tell that she was trying her best to fight against Jennifer. She throws a punch towards her face, misses it as Jennifer dodges it, and then while she was distracted, Jennifer uses her power to fling Jade all of the way back into the wall, causing her to fall with a thump. A pang of pain shoots through my heart to see that, but when I saw that Jade was still okay, I went back into survival mode.
By this point, Deucalion was already hiding behind Scott. I could tell that Deucalion knew that whatever he had stolen from me was no longer in play, meaning that he didn't know what was coming. He was scared, and he was hiding behind Scott; a mere beta.
"You coward," Jennifer snarls as Derek sulks behind her, clearly not wanting to fight her either. I knew that he was supposed to be on her side, but she had all of the power right now.
I was surprised to see Scott's eyes glow red just then, a new status of his that I wasn't aware of. Allison notices it at well, but we can only watch with wide eyes as his claws extend. Scott goes to throw a fist at her as well, but she grabs his wrist before he can make contact. She breaks his arm as I hear bone snap from across the room, causing Scott to yell out in pain. I didn't blame him; he didn't have his healing ability. She throws him to the ground as he screams again, but out of pain or frustration, I couldn't tell.
"You didn't see any of this in your vision, did you Corey?" Jennifer laughs in that demonic voice, her white eyes staring at me. I worried that she was going to come after me next, but then she turns and heads back to Deucalion. He tries to get away from her, but she just grabs his head and throws him to the ground, and I knew what was coming next.
"Please, don't-" Deucalion tries to muster out before she was kneeling beside him, grabbing a handful of his hair and flinging his head on the concrete below. I flinch with every impact as blood pools around him, his tongue even hanging out of his mouth. I wondered for a moment if the timeline was back on track, but then I remembered that Allison was here this time too.
I try to reach out to stop her, but then she was flinging that chain in her hand towards Jennifer, getting it to wrap around her neck. Allison tugs on it as Jennifer's hands leave Deucalion and go to her throat, trying to get oxogen back to her lungs. She gasps like a fish out of water, and just for a moment, I thought that Allison was going to end it all right here. The parents would live, Deucalion would be left half dead like he deserved to be, and revenge would have been played out for all of those people Jennifer killed. But then the universe found another way to balance out the playing field.
Her pale hand reaches out and grabs the chain before tugging on it as hard as she could, causing it to slack around her neck and for Allison to lose her grip. The chain goes flying into Jennifer's hands as Allison takes a step backwards, knowing that we were really screwed now. It was my turn to step in front of Allison now.
"You really think you can beat me?" she snarls as she leaves Deucalion half dead on the floor, gathering up the chain in her hands. She walks slowly towards Allison and I as we hold our ground, scared but not cowards. If I were to die right now, I'd rather die trying.
I shake my head. "No, actually. I know Allison and I can't. But them...I think they can."
Jennifer looks back at the mess she created, with Deucalion half dead on the floor, Scott's arm broke, and Jade still lying there half awake against the wall. Derek just stood there like an obedient dog; but I could tell that he had a plan forming in the back of his head.
"You really think so?" she laughs before looking back at me. Her face goes back to normal then, giving me a bad feeling. She was getting too cocky. "You know Corey, the last time I met a seer, they were trying to do the same exact thing as you. He thought that he was helping the better good, just like you. Deucalion got to him to use him just like you, but I killed him first before he became a threat. Why can't you just see that what I'm doing here is the better good? They're the killers; they're the murderers."
"They're not any worse than you." Jennifer was getting deathly close to us now, but it made me wonder why she was stalling. This was supposed to be her time to shine; her time to finish the deed. "What they did to you was horrible, but look at yourself, Jennifer. You killed so many people just for this moment. I hope it was worth it."
She smirks at me, showing some blood on her teeth. "You picked the wrong side, Corey. You chose your fate, but now it's going to be your downfall. I can't let you be a potential threat in the future for me either, so just like that other seer Corey, you're going to be just as dead as them."
I feel Allison brush past me then, but I didn't know what she was doing. I reach out to stop her, but she already had a dagger in her hand running towards Jennifer, it having to be the one that was in my belt pocket. I can hear my scream echo inside of my head as I do nothing but watch Jennifer take the chain in her hands and fling it at Allison, it wrapping around her throat this time.
The dagger in her hands clings as it falls to the ground, her hands clasping around her throat to get the chain off of her. Jennifer just pulls it tighter as I run forwards then, not going to watch her kill her. I hear my heart racing in my ears as Jennifer lets go of the chain and runs towards me, me being the only thing she really wanted.
Weird deja vu flashes through my mind as Jennifer grabs my throat, running and screaming as she slams me back into the wall of the distillery. Her face transforms back into that monster as she glares at me, her hand starting to choke me as I tried to gasp for air.
"You chose this path, Corey. Now here's your fate."
I widen my eyes as I see Allison yank the chain off of her neck, hearing her gasping and coughing as she falls to the ground, her eyes stuck on me. I could tell that she was trying her best to get back up and to stop Jennifer, but she couldn't. She couldn't do anything but watch me die.
I couldn't even say goodbye.
Suddenly though, Jennifer's hand flashes up and covers my eyes, as if she was hiding something from me. I didn't know what she was trying to do, but then I felt the pain. I felt something behind my eyes burn and sting, feeling as if a thousand needles were being pricked into them. It was the worst thing I've ever felt in my life.
I wanted to scream, but her hand around my throat permitted me from doing so. My mouth opens like a fish gasping for water, but no sound came out. I try to get away from her hand, but she was too strong. All I could do was stand there and wish that she had granted me death rather than this.
"What are you doing?" I hear Derek gasp, but I couldn't see him. I thought that I heard Allison scream something too, but I couldn't make it out. All I could hear was the sounds of my screams I would be making if I could breathe.
Then suddenly, Jennifer's hand was gone. Her hand around my throat was gone too, and I was afraid to open my eyes. When she finally let me go, I screamed at the top of my lungs as I clawed at my eyelids, feeling some type of itch that wouldn't go away. It was excruciating.
"What did you do to him!" I hear Jade shout then, it coming out as half of a growl. The eclipse must be over now; but for some reason, I wasn't relieved.
I keep my eyes closed, afraid that if I were to open them, I would only see darkness. Jennifer's laugh comes across my ears, making me angrier than before. I feel hands grab my sides then as I scream, afraid that she was back to do the same thing to me again, but then I heard Allison's whimpers in my ear, making me feel safe. She cradles me as I shake my head, my eyes burning as if they were on fire.
"I made him feel everything that I felt when your perfect pack ripped me to shreds," I hear her voice in my ears. It wasn't until the last part she said that made me want to kill her myself. "And I took away his insight into the future."
She took away my ability to see the future. She stole it all.
The Universe always finds balance.
I wanted to cry, to scream, to get out of here. But if there was one thing I wanted more than all of those things, I wanted to watch Jennifer die.
So when I suffered through the pain and opened my eyes, I didn't regret it at all. When my vision came back to me, everything was in red blotches. Jennifer must have made my eyes bleed, because I could barely see. I could however see Jade raise her hand into the air, ready to end Jennifer Blake.
"The offing was barred by a black bank of clouds, and the tranquil waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the earth flowed sombre under an overcast sky – seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness," Jade quotes, making me wonder for a moment how she knew about that, but then I didn't care. All I cared about in that moment was Jennifer's hideous face when she watched Jade slice her claws across her throat, taking her life away.
It was over.
Jade stares down at what she did for a moment, watching Jennifer gasp for air as blood spouts onto the concrete next to her. Jennifer's eyes go distant then as she stops moving, her face forever stuck in it's true form. I couldn't feel anything but hatred as I stared at her dead body, making me feel relieved. She was gone, and now everything would be alright again.
"Corey," I hear Allison say before her eyes were looking into mine, her face showing worry. I saw then that she had marks around her throat from where Jennifer had thrown that chain around her, making me more glad that she was dead. Allison's fingers brush across my cheek as her eyes stay stuck on mine, but I couldn't decide if it was because of this being over with or if it was because of what Jennifer did to my eyes.
"Looks like you can teach me how to fight now," I half smile, breaking the mood. She smiles at me before her head falls onto my shoulder, causing my arms to wrap around her. And in that moment, I was thankful that everyone was still here. Everyone was still alive that mattered to me the most.
I had Allison, and she had me.
