01. Catching Up
Two months.
It was hard to keep track how long I have been in here, but it's been precisely two months and eleven days. Rarely did I ever see the light of day, but if I ever saw any light at all, it was from someone coming into the vault; most of the time so they could talk to me.
All of this time, I learned that they were an alpha pack and wanted Derek Hale, but I only learned that because of murmers. I learned that there were six of them, their names being Deucalion, Kali, Ennis, Ethan, and Aiden, the twins. Then of course there was Jade, but I haven't seen nor talked to her ever since the day she brought me here. I guess she was too ashamed to show her face.
Erica and Boyd had also been in the vault with me all of this time, along with a girl named Cora, but two weeks ago was when Erica fought against them and got herself killed. She might have done Allison a lot of wrong in the past, but never in my life had I been filled with so much rage when I had watched Kali take the life out of her eyes. It was inhumane.
I had gotten to know Boyd a little bit better, but little did he know that I had already known a lot about him. We didn't become best friends or anything like that; we just kept it to small talk. Besides, being stuck in a vault isn't exactly the place to meet friends.
Cora on the other hand was in no mood for small talk. She had a feisty attitude about herself, so rarely did she really ever speak. If she did, it was about how she was going to rip their throats out when she finally got out of here, but those were always small threats. I could tell she knew deep down that she wasn't strong enough for things like that, and after she had watched Erica die, it shut her mouth real quick.
I, on the other hand, have had a lot of time to do a lot of thinking. Things like my life back home, my parents, Jade, and of course Allison. What I thought about most was what was going to happen to me when I got out of here...if, I mean. It wasn't like I had anywhere to go other than home, and if that happened, that would mean never coming back to Beacon Hills again, and I didn't know if I could do that.
After all, once you're thrown into a life like this, you're sort of stuck with it.
But what really kept me going was the hope that Allison would get me out of here. Every day I waited and waited, but she never came, not yet at least. It's been two months now, meaning that she's got to be home. She'll notice me gone...right? She'll have to come looking for me soon.
Whenever I wasn't thinking, I was being put to use by the alpha pack. Every day they came into the vault and yanked me out, only for there to be a new person standing there scared out of their mind. They forced me to practice my ability which grew stronger every day, in the hope that I'd see the future, not the past. I have yet to get that far, but I have a feeling if they keep this up, I'll be there before too long.
It was the same process every day. Think, eat, sleep, practice, think. Every time they pulled me out of that vault to practice, I grew to hate them more with every passing day. The fact that they pulled an innocent person off of the streets for me to practice on was enough as it was, but then watching them take the memory away from them was the worst part. Their screams from their claws going into their necks haunted me at night, chilling me to the core. I just wanted to help them and tell them it was alright.
Now I was sitting up against the vault wall, my mind flipping back and forth between my abilities now and about Jade. I wondered what would happen once they got stronger, along with the fact of how I could even do it, but never did I get any answers from Deucalion. Every time I asked him about it or about Jade, he told me to keep quiet and that Jade would talk to me when she felt like it. Never did I ever guess it would take her two months to finally show her face again.
So when that vault door opened up and I saw Jade step inside, I couldn't help but glare.
I hear Boyd and Cora growl from over in the opposite corner, but Jade just flashed her red eyes at them before they stopped, knowing that they were no match against her. I knew that of course too, but I also knew that some part of Jade had to still be in there. A part that would let me go.
"Ya know, you've got a lot of balls to kidnap me and then not explain yourself for two months," I groan as I cross my arms. It felt weird talking to her this way, but I didn't care. I knew she wouldn't hurt me...well, at least not kill me.
Jade slowly walks over to me with her hands behind her back, causing me to narrow my eyes. I don't get to see what it is until she pulls out and sticks it out towards me, making my blood run cold. It was one of the shirts I had given her what seems to now be ages ago, but it was only a week before the accident when I had given it to her. It had been her birthday, but that was when I remembered that that was the shirt she had been wearing when we...died.
She looks down at it, her eyes growing soft as she ran her fingers over the seams. "I remember you giving me this on my birthday; you had literally drove over to my house at six in the morning so you could wake me up and take me out for breakfast before school had started. Then you gave me this shirt...the same shirt I had been wearing when we drove over that bridge. I've kept it ever since."
I soften for a moment when I see the sad look in her eyes, but then I remembered why she must be doing this. She wanted my pity. I stare into her eyes, trying to read her. "What do you want?"
She furrows her eyebrows. "I want you to understand what's happened and what is going to happen-"
"Then explain to me how in the hell this happened!" I screech, finally leaping up onto my feet. I'm practically breathing down her neck as she stares into my eyes. "How...how are you alive?"
She takes a step back as she lowers the shirt, something changing behind her eyes. "I never died in the first place."
My jaw drops slightly. "I watched you die, Jade. You weren't breathing-"
"I had already been bitten by that point," she says, looking down at her hands. "It was the night before when Kali had found me...I was out in my backyard reading a book in the hammock when she grabbed me. I didn't know what was happening--I tried to put up a fight, but it was too late. She bit me on my forearm before getting away without a trace, leaving me confused and bleeding. I had just assumed by that point it was just an animal, but I was wrong."
I bite my lower lip. "Jade, why didn't you tell me?"
"What was I supposed to say?" she exclaims. "That some person came out of the woods and bit me on the arm? It's not like I knew anything was going to happen to me then!"
I'm silent for a moment when my eye catches Cora and Boyd watching our conversation carefully, trying to pick up whatever they can about her. "But I saw your body, Jade...they put you in an ambulance."
"I was just healing," she says, seeming to know everything there was to know about werewolves at this point. "When I woke up again I was with them. They taught me things Corey...they helped me grow better."
I scoff. "Better? You're telling me that making your eyes red made you better?"
She sighs. "The bite Corey...it was hell at first, but now it's much more. It's a-"
"Don't you dare say that's a gift," I snap back, spite in my eyes. "They turned you into a monster."
Jade takes another step back as she raises her chin. "A monster? I'm anything but."
"I was your best friend," I say, shaking my head as the back of my throat started to burn. "Best friends mean we look out for one another, not by helping the bad guys kidnap me. Hell, the whole time I was dead I wondered where you were and tried to find you, but here you are, helping keep me locked away in here."
Jade steps closer then, whispering fiercely. "Do you think I wanted to do this to you? They told me that if I didn't they'd kill you."
"Bullshit," I spit back. "You know damn well that they wouldn't kill me for something like that. Apparently my ability means too much to them, and you got played for a fool."
Jade clenches her fist. "It's more complicated than you think. Besides, you obviously weren't looking for me the whole time if you got that close to that girl."
I raise my eyebrows. "Allison? What in the hell does she have to do with this?"
Her jaw clenches. "Nothing, Corey. I just wish you could understand."
"I don't think I could ever understand why you agreed to this," I say as I fade out. "Who'd they make you kill?"
Her face goes pale. "What are you talking about?"
"You're an alpha, meaning you had to of killed someone to get those eyes," I remark, seeing that she was hiding what she had done. She starts to turn away then, growing old of this conversation.
She looks down. "It's none of your business-"
I was sick of her lies. I wanted to see for myself, so I did the only thing I thought to do. Without hesitation, I reached out and grabbed her bicep, hearing her let out a growl before I was already seeing everything. It took a moment before I finally saw the images; ones that made my blood run cold.
"Finish her," Kali snarls as blood covers her entire body. There were at least five other bodies lying around her, since it appeared that she had killed them all just to get to the alpha. "Jade!"
I see Jade then; standing to the side as her wide eyes scanned all of the bodies that Kali had killed. She looked terrified. She appeared that she didn't want to do what Kali was yelling at her to do, which made me sympathetic for a moment. But then Kali yelled once again at Jade, causing her to walk towards a blonde haired girl that was crawling across the ground.
I could barely see her face, for it was covered in blood, but she looked like she was beautiful. Maybe in her later 20s, a strong alpha, but she was dying. I could tell by the look on her face that she knew that too, and it was closing in fast. Tears of blood ran down her cheeks as she looked over her shoulder, staring at all of her dead pack members.
I watch Jade walk over to her then, standing down over her as she stared, looking as if she was debating doing this. It didn't take her long however before her claws and canines extend, her eyes turning to a bright gold. The image blurs for a moment before the next thing I see is her ripping that girl to shreds. No, it wasn't one swift motion that just ended it, but she took her time.
She was enjoying it.
She looks up then, blood covering her face and her hands. I see Kali smirk as she walked over to the new alpha, offering her hand to help her stand back up. The girl on the ground lies perfectly still, her face in the dirt, more that definitely dead.
I see Jade's eyes turn red before the image is gone.
"Let go of me!" I hear her yell before she rips my hand off of her, throwing me back into the wall. I hit my head slightly as I fall to the ground, letting out a moan from the pain. I barely open my eyes to see her face drain, almost as if she didn't know her own strength.
She stares at me for a moment before backing away, shaking her head. "I'm sorry, Corey. I'm really sorry."
I'm met with darkness again as the vault door slams shut.
