The opera that Adèle, Charles, and Catharine watch is La Bohème and I included two arias from that opera: O Soave Fanciulla and Quando M'en Vo. O Soave Fanciulla is the big love duet between the main couple: Mìmì (a seamstress dying of tuberculosis) and Rodolpho (her impoverished artist lover). This piece of music is what Charles and his lost love, Madeleine, danced to on the night they met and foreshadows how Madeleine herself will eventually die herself from tuberculosis.
Quando M'en Vo is sung a character named Musetta who is very flirtatious and his trying to win back her former boyfriend, Marcello. The song is pretty much Musetta bragging about her own beauty and how attractive she is to men. This aria is connected with Catharine, who was a great beauty in her youth and sought after by many suitors which consequently made her very vain.
I also plan on using the song Fred Astaire by San Cisco in this section because the singing is telling their lover that they can do better. Augustin not accepting Marianne's ring is in a sense, rejecting her love for the reason that he feels that he isn't good enough for her.
Also, Fred Astaire was a huge movie star in the 1930s and would have been your go to example of the best catch that a girl can get. Augustin knows that Marianne deserves the best, which he cannot give her.
