Chapter 3

Rising up from where she lay, Missouri reflexively raised a head to apply pressure on her right temple in a feeble attempt to ease the pounding, and dizziness that accompanied it. Getting somewhat of a grip she opened her eyes and climbed out of bed, supressing a yawn she half blindly walked towards her bathroom until she stopped midway as images fluttered within her mind. Missouri raised a hand to cover her face as disbelief washed over her, and then something a lot powerful; rage, anger. She wasn't quite sure but she'd had enough. "You've got to be kidding me!" She said to herself. It was the second time in the same day she woke up without as much as an indication of HOW. And frankly she needed to know how. In that moment she forgot the fear, forgot that what she saw was impossible and decided that she will no longer be a slave to her fears, if they wanted her dead, she'd be dead! But she wasn't, and she believed that she deserved an explanation.

It was already dark out when she left her home, the stars overhead held promise as they seemed to glow brighter than ever; giving Missouri fuel to carry out her plan. Arriving at the Cathedral, her resolve began to waver, but she couldn't stop now, it was too late. Finding herself on the roof she looked toward the gargoyles, all of them in place, and anger flared up again! Who gave them the right to pretend to be so still as if they were innocent and ignorant of the action of moving...And flying her conscious reminded her. Maybe if she wasn't so mad she'd have reasoned with herself, left but she hadn't paid attention to the inner pleading of her mind. "I know you can hear me!" She shouted like a woman who's lost her sanity. She  turned towards every gargoyle. "You can pretend, but I know! You hear me!" She snapped, but all the words she wanted to say, they fell out slowly, leaving her drained, she hadn't even realised that her heart was beating unnaturally fast in her chest, she swore she heard the actual lub-dub sound it makes. "All I want is to know." her voice a soft whisper as she fought the onslaught of tears that threatened to erupt from her big green eyes. "Please tell me that you're not gonna knock yourself out again."

Missouri looked up and saw; firstly that one of the gargoyles was missing, no longer prowling aggressively on its pillar. Then she noticed a boy, who looked no more than eighteen, he was slender, tall and really beautiful. The only imperfection was a scar that ran length ways across his cheek. She stared incredulously at him, unable to voice anything, but then again her mind conjured not a single thought, and she wondered if this is what it meant to be brain dead. "I had the task of carrying you home the last two times, please refrain from doing anything silly." his voice was pleading but his clear steel blue eyes spoke of humour. Missouri thought how was she able to be rendered speechless by a child! She was adult for heaven's sake!

Missouri was about to speak when she heard a familiar growl that seemed to echo throughout the entire universe, she turned away from the boy to peer at the source of the sound, she saw the gargoyle from earlier today raise its head as it gave into its growl, then, predator like it moved from the pillar and walked towards her and the boy, shifting and changing to adapt human qualities. "Leo, that's enough." He then shifted his focus to Missouri. "You'll have to forgive him, I'm afraid he's not the most brilliant of my angels." The man had a kind smile, that didn't quite reach his orange eyes. Orange! It was an unusual shade that one would expect to be naturally occuring in canines and felines. Missouri stared at him, he was nothing like the boy, Leo instead of being beautiful he was...masculine in every sense. This was emphasised in the hard plane of his jaw, his build and his height, even his voice...it was all something out of a dream.

Realisation hit her, like a car that spun rapidly out of control. "Did you say angel?" her voice was so small, that even she didn't recognise it. The man of no more than a few years older than she was, tilted his head slightly as if trying to read or understand her. "Miraculous things have been documented to occur." He replied levelly, his eyes searching hers. Missouri was faintly aware of aunison of growls as the last two gargoyles morphed into their human forms. Her eyes were wide, her thoughts racing and colliding none fully able to be completed. "For angels' sake Hadriel, if she passes out again I'm not taking her home; I draw the line at three times in only twenty four hours." Leo spoke forthrightly, his gaze locking with Hadriel's. "That won't be necessary Leo; if she was going to she would have done it by now." His voice was calm, cold and sharp like a thin shard of ice, and then he fixed me with his stare. "Am I right?" He asked, but Missouri got the feeling that he wasn't expecting an answer, but she shook her head anyway.

"You all," Missouri found her voice and gestured to the four 'angels' standing in front of her, Hadriel stood at the front, his hands at his side while the other three, another man and a woman, along with Leo stood behind him. "you say you are angels, but... you're gargoyles, you were all, each one of you standing in the form of..." her voice wavered, and she paused. Hadriel looked upon her again, "Gargoyles are angels, the warrior angels in fact." Missouri thought that she must be going insane, Gargoyles, angel, are one and the same? She was no true believer in religion but she thought of them as separate entities. Apparently they weren't. That little voice in her head spoke.
