Chapter 2

Missouri awoke to a familiar setting, feeling comforted by the soft allure of her bed, her eyes fluttered open only to close as exhaustion swept over her. Missouri shot up of her bed as the occurrences of the night before came into focus. She scrambled out of bed, her legs giving way beneath causing her to fall on the floor. Letting out a sigh of relieve; she knew she was home, the only frightening aspect was; she hadn't known how she got home. Perhaps she was dreaming or...something. She suddenly recalled her hand and the excruciating pain that she felt last night and instantly looked upon it.

No. It wasn't a dream. The wound was there, although, she thought that it didn't look as bad as it had felt. Her hand was burnt, revealing the shape of her assailant’s hand and there were tiny scars; five of them that she guessed were his fingernails as they had dug into her burning flesh. What she couldn't deduce was what happened after that, after she'd been claimed by sleep.

"Damn it!" Missouri said to no one in particular as her phone vibrated to her favourite song. It was Sarah. "Hello." Missouri cautiously spoke into the phone. "Hello? Hello? That's all you can say? Missouri have you any idea of the time? We've been waiting for you for two hours! Where have you been?" Missouri opened her mouth to speak but was interrupted. "Don't answer that! You know what don't bother we're leaving. Too bad this semester had ended but just gear up to do our projects on your own, that's your punishment!" and with a loud click that call ended. Ouch! If Missouri was confused with regard to Sarah's feeling for her she would have felt hurt but that was Sarah; one moment she can be the sweetest person on the planet the next, she would be able to twist your conception of what a true demon was! She knew she screwed up but this time... she didn't even know how.

Missouri checked her phone, no wonder Sarah had been furious! It was midday! Of course she slept in a lot but that was usually around the hours of nine and ten...but TWELVE? How was she so exhausted? It was a question that needed an answer, despite so much sleep she felt as if she'd been waking since the world war in 1914!

She ran to the bathroom quickly showered and pulled on a T-shirt and jeans. She shook her messy head of waist length curls and fastened it in a loose knot. She had to know what happened, had to understand why she suddenly felt as if she was supposed to do something. Missouri walked out of her house, a small inconspicuous work of white washed walls, without so much as a gate to encompass the property. But that's how she bought it and she was quite proud of it even though it didn't and wouldn't live up to others standards, but it was something she got for herself after she'd turned eighteen and was allowed to leave the orphanage. She'd worked hard for a couple of years, while going to school until she was able to purchase the house. It wasn't much, but it was the closest thing she'd ever had to a home.

Turning the key in the door, Missouri looked behind her shoulder. There was this weird feeling in the pit of her stomach which her brain registered as fear. She shook her head. It wasn't the dead of night, she was perfectly safe, no one would dare attack her in broad daylight! Would they? Bending her head, she began to walk, she wasn't sure of her destination nor did she care, she just needed to clear her head, but the surprise she felt when she ended up in front of the exact Cathedral she'd been to last night was unimaginable. Intending to walk away and never look back, she was betrayed by her body as she found her legs carrying her inside the abandoned Cathedral. Upon entering, Missouri could almost imagine how it used to look on the inside, it wasn't that old, it was surprisingly in good condition. She imagined people of all means of life walking into the Cathedral with the same purpose of worshipping their God. But she didn't exactly feel heavenly, with a life like hers, one learns that God either doesn't exist or doesn't care, either way she never wasted her time praying to someone who would never answer. She was a strong believer in what she could see.

Letting out a breath as she hesitantly pulled herself away from the imaginations of her mind she searched for the stairs, finding it she started to climb, anxiety rising with each increasing step she took. Reaching on the roof, she was immediately aware of the wind whispering a toneless song, one that was in time with the motion of her swaying hair. She walked to where she stood the night before and saw nothing out of the ordinary, frankly she didn't know what she hoped to achieve by coming here, she spun around counting each gargoyle as her eyes connected with it; three. Wait, what? There were four last night she was sure of it. Feeling her hairs standing on end once again she mentally made the decision to leave. Coming here was a terrible idea!

Before Missouri could execute her plan, a huge shadow lurked in the sky, she spotted wings and limbs....it was the missing gargoyle! The grey figure flew towards her causing her to back away, until it landed on the roof, with an earth shaking thud. It let out an ear splitting growl, its fangs glistening in the sunlight. It dropped on all fours, slowly rising to walk on its hind limbs, unable to make a sound due to the fear she felt, Missouri continued backing away until she slipped, falling onto the floor of the roof banging her head on a concreted wall, her eyes fluttered until they closed on the image of the most fearful creature she'd ever seen and she'd thought that this was to be her last day on earth.
