Swimming in the Deep
Mary reached the waters edge, then turned to look at Ava. "Ava I need you to concentrate, where is your body?"
Ava closed her eyes and her ghostly image wavered. "I'm cold, under the water. Over there." She pointed downstream toward the swirling pool surrounded by boulders. The current was strong and the white water crashed against the rocks.
Mary picked her way over to the boulders and then carefully made her way across, hoping from one to the other. "Where Ava? Show me." She begged.
Ava floated across the water to a large boulder, the current pulling leaves and twigs down and underneath the water. "Here, I'm here!" She said excitedly.
Mary leapt to the boulder and began unpacking her supplies. She drew a circle of protection with the salt. In her rush she failed to notice the small break in the circle of protection. Then with shaking hands she lit five candles along the outside. She mixed some herbs and then began flipping through her book for a spell.
"Ava stand here in the middle." Mary directed. Ava complied. "Now stay still no matter what happens."
"Hurry Mary, I'm so cold." Ava whispered, her image fading.
Mary began to chant. "Optim no
Cruc resin...necrus resin" The water began to bubble and slow, soon the water was nearly mirror smooth with the exception of the tiny bubbles rising to the surface. Avas body became visible at the bottom, her honey blonde hair swirling around her face. Her arms and legs hung limply like a dolls and her white sundress clung to her body. A rope around her middle anchored her to a cluster of cinderblocks below. Mary kicked off her shoes and jumped into the water. The freezing water nearly took her breath and for a moment she was paralyzed. Then taking a deep breath she dove below. Pushing herself and swimming hard for the bottom. Ava's body was only about twenty feet down but by the time Mary reached her limp body, her lungs felt like they would explode. She tugged at the knots and looked on the rivers bottom for a rock or a piece of glass she could use to cut the rope. Instead she found much more. Other cinderblocks littered the rivers bottom, and attached to them were more bodies. Mary felt the remaining air whoosh from her lungs in a silent scream. She pushed off the silty bottom and swam for the surface. It felt like she was drowning, the edges of her vision grew dark. Then finally she reached the surface. Gasping and crying she clung to the rock.
"Did you find me? Ava asked quietly. She was sitting on the boulder her feet submerged in the still water.
"Yes but you're not alone." Mary sobbed.
Ava smiled, her eyes suddenly glowing red. "You'll stay with me won't you?"
Mary let out a shriek as she was grabbed from below. As she was pulled under water she saw the apparition of her best friend morph into a twisted nightmare, complete with horns and tattered black wings.
